Queen ? Camilla

Why is Camilla always referred to as the Queen, when she's Queen Consort? Since the announcement of her title, I've never once heard consort mentioned, even by the BBC.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was just the Queen when George VI ruled.

Queen Elizabeth II is now the Late Queen, Camilla is Queen Camilla.

Because she's the Queen.

Because she is the Queen! Do we really have to go over this yet again?

The wife of the King is the Queen. Queen Alexandra. Queen Mary. Queen Elizabeth.

She was initially referred to as Queen Consort to distinguish her from the late Queen. But she is and always has been the Queen.

Queen Consorts have always been known as just ‘the Queen’ or ‘Queen <name>’. Why is this a surprise to you? When Kate becomes Queen Consort, she’ll be exactly the same as Camilla is now.

Philip wasn't routinely referred to as Prince Consort, but that was his role.
Katherine will also be a Queen Consort and known as Queen Katherine.

That's beside the point. We all know The Queen Mother had been Queen Elizabeth. She was George VI's first wife, so of course she was known as Queen. However, you must know that it had been expected that Camilla would become 'Princess Consort'. The Queen then announced that it was her dearest wish for Camilla to be known as 'Queen Consort' when the time came. This was duly announced, yet her true title has never been used.

No. This isn't about my opinion. Camilla, Kate and The Queen Mother are, will be and were, Queen Consorts. The difference is in their titles. Kate and QM correctly will have, had, Queen as title. Camilla's title was announced as 'Queen Consort', as requested by the late Queen.

Prince Consort was a one-off title devised for Albert by Queen Victoria.

There wasn't much precedent for determining the title of a male consort.

Philip of Spain had been king, but no-one was having that again.

Prince George of Denmark was Duke of Cumberland (title granted before Anne became queen), but didn't have any English or British royal title.

I thought it was ‘Queen’ rather than ‘consort’ that the late Queen was talking about in respect of Camilla as there were some voices of dissent that didn’t want her to be Queen

I think its like a school class.

We have Milly, Molly and Mildred.

They all have second names but we can distinguish them easily as there is only one of each in the class.

However there are two Mia's so to avoid confusion they are known as Mia S and Mia J using the first letter of their second name.

Queen Elizabeth (QE11's Mum) was known simply as Queen Elizabeth, until her daughter was crowned. Then it got confusing because there were two Queen Elizabeth's. A Queen Regent, and a Queen Consort or possibly Dowager Queen I'm not sure of the exact terms. So she was referred to as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Or just the Queen Mother to keep the word count down. But a small change to make it easier to understand who was being referred to.

We don't need to say Queen Consort Camilla unless being formal, because there is only one Queen Camilla so we know who is being referred to.

I believe the Queen explicitly stated that she wished Camilla to be known as ‘Queen Consort’. This was because Camilla, many years prior, had said she wished to be known as ‘Princess Consort’ once Charles became king.

The Queen then overturned this. She was publicly signalling that she wanted Camilla to be accepted as Queen Consort when Charles succeeded her, which she rightfully is, and she’s styled just as all the Queen Consorts that have come before her have been.

"Queen" Consort as apposed to "Princess" Consort as was originally proposed when people were still concerned about second marriages and divorcees I think. The Queen/Princess being relevant not the consort which would have always been and will always be for someone marring a monarch.

Women married to the king are Queen Consort. Women like Queen Elizabeth who rule in their own right are Queen regnant. So Queen Mary the Queen mother were Queen Consort.

The point was that QE was telling you all: she's the Queen, get the fuck over it!!

Actually just found the answer. Her official title was Queen Consort from Sep 2022 when Charles took the throne until April 2023, when Buckingham Palace announced a change of title, leading to her being henceforth known as Queen Camilla. I had guessed it was probably something like that, but nobody on this site knew any more than I did. The announcement slipped in under the radar.

‘Consort’ is a descriptor of her constitutional status, not a permanent part of her everyday form of address.

Queen Elizabeth was announcing that Camilla be given the same title as the other wives of former Kings. And they have all been called Queen xxx even though their official title is Queen Consort.

Slipped under the radar?

It may have for you but not others.

If a lack of attention meant you missed the announcement then I’m afraid that is on you.

Why does it matter so much? Because it really doesn’t to others.

And the Queen likely gives no hoots.
