Why is Camilla always referred to as the Queen, when she's Queen Consort? Since the announcement of her title, I've never once heard consort mentioned, even by the BBC.

Actually just found the answer. Her official title was Queen Consort from Sep 2022 when Charles took the throne until April 2023, when Buckingham Palace announced a change of title, leading to her being henceforth known as Queen Camilla. I had guessed it was probably something like that, but nobody on this site knew any more than I did. The announcement slipped in under the radar.

Not quite. All the married in queens are queen consort. The reason that the late Queen referred to her wish that Camilla be Queen consort was to
make clear that she saw Camilla as Charles’ Queen as opposed to the made up Princess consort which was a soo to those who believed in Saint Diana and she used the term Queen consort because if she had said she wished her to be “Queen”, that would have sounded like she was naming Camilla as her successor iyswim. Camilla’s title was left as Queen consort for a while, because after seventy years of having an actual Queen regnant, it took a lot of getting use to hearing a referral to “the Queen” and not meaning Elizabeth. Around the coronation it was deemed that people had had enough time to get used to Camilla as just “the queen”. So they haven’t changed her title . Just brought the correct one in gradually

At the time of their marriage, Camilla's popularity wasn't exactly stellar. To my knowledge this was the first time that the heir apparent had married his mistress since George IV married Maria Fitzherbert in 1785. Add to that the tragic death of his young former wife only eight years earlier and I think almost anyone could to some extent understand the prevailing ill feeling. So in 2005 Royal Aids indicated that Camilla would be styled as "Princess Consort" in an attempt to mollify the situation. However, during her Platinum Jubilee in February 2022 the late Queen made a special announcement that it was her "sincere wish" for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort. The title of Queen Consort, as other posters have rightly said, applies to all wives of the ruling monarch. I believe some people may think it is something of a "lesser" title but it effectively means Queen.

Interesting on Antiques Roadshow on Sunday, Fiona Bruce referred to Camilla as Queen Consort throughout the programme. Perhaps it was filmed in the time before the last announcement.

I noticed that. I think it's the first time I've ever actually heard her styled that way. It was filmed in summer 2022. Interesting.

Dontevenlookatme · 08/09/2026 12:06

She’s the wife of the King so she was always going to be the Queen. She wanted the job, she got it.

I wish Charles would stop weaseling about trying to make the public accept her. Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Consort, Queen Consort. He should have had the courage of his convictions to begin with instead of shilly shallying about.

Nobody really cares what she’s called. They only know whether they accept her or not, and that isn’t something Charles can control with window dressing.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 08/09/2026 12:15

It's the same all over Europe Queen Maxims of the Netherlands is queen as her husband is king, she is a queen consort but just called quern Maxima. Their Daughter Catarina will be Queen Catarina but she will be a queen Regnant not consort. What title a future husband may hold I don't know but the Dowager queen of Denmark husband was a Prince, so was the last queen regnant in the Netherlands Beatrix husband was a Prince so there are several queen consorts in Europe, currently no queen regnants but all are referred to as Queen First name. Camilla is wife of the King therefore she is queen

That was her style, not her title. She was titled HM The Queen the second Charles became King. She was initially styled as Queen Consort to differentiate her from the late Queen.

It’s the same as the fact that before that she was officially titled HRH The Princess of Wales with a host of other titles, but styled as HRH the Duchess of Cornwall.

Tryagain26 · 08/09/2026 12:36

She is the Queen in the same way Queen Elizabeth's mother was the Queen, no one called her the Queen consort just the Queen . Similarly the Queen's Grandmother was called Queen Mary . Though they were both Queen Consorts.
A Queen Consort is just the name for the wife of a reigning King. Since the coronation in 2023 her official title has been Queen Camilla

BunnyBunbunbun · 08/09/2026 12:41

Camilla is called the Queen because she is the Queen. Queen Consort is simply the term for a queen who is married to the Sovereign (i.e. king by birth) as opposed to the Queen Regnant, who is the Sovereign and Queen by birth. Queen Mary was Queen Consort, Queen Victoria was Queen Regnant. If things had turned out differently, Diana would have been Queen Consort. Prince Philip was the consort to Queen Elizabeth II.

Why do some people struggle to comprehend this very simple and basic fact, which has been explained over and over? We really need to improve the education system.

I’m not sure it is always lack of understanding. It is also not wanting to accept the facts and / or shit stirring 😆

Definitely.
Mind you, some of it is ignorance.
There's a hefty amount of people that believe the title "Princess of Wales" sprang into being with Diana.

Indeed. And also belongs exclusively to Diana and to no one else ever, so there with knobs on 😜😆😆

Well, the previous Princess of Wales was Queen Mary, who ceased to hold that title in 1910. That's far too long ago for people who don't know anything about anything that happened before social media.

Topseyt123 · 08/09/2026 13:39

Camilla is Queen because she is married to the King. The "Consort" part of the title has been dropped and it is less of a mouthful.

Obviously she has had a long, complicated and winding road to get to where she is, hence all the twists and turns over her title. But she's there now, and I think she is far more suited to the role and to being the partner of the King than Diana really was.

josays · 08/09/2026 13:45

Here's a bbc article from 2022 that explains it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-60274816

On the eve of her Jubilee, the Queen directly addressed the unresolved question of Camilla's future title. "Queen Consort" refers to the spouse of a ruling king and would mean "Queen Camilla" as her future title.

The Queen's message has made it clear that Camilla will be known as Queen

No. This isn't about my opinion. Camilla, Kate and The Queen Mother are, will be and were, Queen Consorts. The difference is in their titles. Kate and QM correctly will have, had, Queen as title. Camilla's title was announced as 'Queen Consort', as requested by the late Queen.

Guess what? It's not up to the late Queen Elizabeth II to determine ,the title. That is entirely up to the current monarch. So Camilla is The Queen as has been the tradition and practice for centuries in Britain.

Sadly, you're right.
So few people consider it worth knowing anything that didn't happen within their lifetimes, such is the self-absorption: "Before my time" being the mantra.
Not even worth pointing out that 1910 is before everyone's time.

The way I feel sometimes though @LaMarschallin, I’m not sure 1910 is before my time 🤪

I think a lot of people didn’t realise that QEII’s statement about Camilla’s title was actually about how she was going to be styled, rather than her actually title.

She would always have been technically titled HM The Queen, but it had been said years ago that she’d be styled as Princess Consort.

QEII was simply putting her weight behind the decision to style her as HM The Queen, presumably as a hope it would seem less “pushy” or dishonest if it came from her rather than Charles.

AgentPidge · 08/09/2026 14:23

Idontpostmuch · 08/09/2026 10:47

That's beside the point. We all know The Queen Mother had been Queen Elizabeth. She was George VI's first wife, so of course she was known as Queen. However, you must know that it had been expected that Camilla would become 'Princess Consort'. The Queen then announced that it was her dearest wish for Camilla to be known as 'Queen Consort' when the time came. This was duly announced, yet her true title has never been used.

I'm pretty sure they used Queen Consort on the BBC the other day. It was on The Antiques Roadshow. Camilla was a guest. It was a repeat though, so could've been before they stopped using it ( if they have). I thought it sounded odd, as if she's not really Queen.

JustAnotherWhinger · 08/09/2026 14:29

I think the decision, whilst understandable, to style Camilla as HRH Duchess of Cornwall rather than use HRH The Princess of wales was actually the start of the palace adding to the confusion around titles.

Similar to when William and Catherine married and they were adamant she wasn’t a princess. She was. She was HRH Princess William. Using HRH The Duchess of Cambridge didn’t actually change that fact.

And using Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge on the birth certificates of the children also added to the weight of places using titles incorrectly as that isn’t correct. It should have been HRH The Duchess of Cambridge. That made the correction made on Meghan’s title on Archie’s birth certificate look like they were trying to be grandiose, whereas someone had obviously just pointed out the correct way it should be done.

ThePurpleShark · 08/09/2026 14:34

Well, 1, she's is Queen

and 2, who cares.

William's wife is forever known mainly as Kate Middleton, people know she is not literally Kate Middleton anymore but it stuck. No one cares, or they would call her something else 😂

Very true! Pandering to the sentiments of the public and not following the traditional rules, is exactly why we have threads like these where people fail to understand the obvious….the wife of the king is a queen….

Excellent point. Camilla was the most recent Princess of Wales before Catherine.
