Why is Camilla always referred to as the Queen, when she's Queen Consort? Since the announcement of her title, I've never once heard consort mentioned, even by the BBC.

I disagree. Charles was playing the long game. I think his hope was that in time the public perception of Camilla and of him would improve to the point that she could be known as Queen. And I think that, to a large extent, that is what happened.

She was always going to be known as the Queen
Probably because she's the Queen.

I think it’s made people think he was dishonest and playing them to make himself more popular.

He should have stuck with ‘never complain, never explain’ and Camilla would currently be Queen with no questions as it would never have been suggested otherwise.

There are two types of Queens: queens regnant and queens consort. Both are referred to as Queen Mary/Victoria/Elizabeth etc.
If Charles divorced Camilla and married Sharon, she would be Queen Sharon because she is the wife of the King (a Queen consort). It’s not difficult.

There's a hefty amount of people that believe the title "Princess of Wales" sprang into being with Diana.

Well, the previous Princess of Wales was Queen Mary, who ceased to hold that title in 1910. That's far too long ago for people who don't know anything about anything that happened before social media.

Irony alert; Queen Mary was never Princess of Wales (she was Duchess of York) because George V was never Prince of Wales as the 2nd son of the King he was the Duke of York. Queen Alexandra was by virtue of being married to Edward VII.

Mary of Teck was Princess of Wales from 1901-1910. Her husband's elder brother died before Edward VII became king.

He was Duke of York while Queen Victoria was alive and his father was PofW.

His elder brother (Eddy, the Duke of Clarence) died before their father (Bertie) succeeded to the throne. When Bertie did succeed, as Edward VII, George, who was then next in line, was created Prince of Wales.

Mary had originally been engaged to Eddy, but after his death she and George grew close and married.

Prince Phillip was also consort

I think you’ve muddled Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Elizabeth was Duchess of York and then Queen after the abdication.

Queen Mary was Princess of Wales.

It's Georgia Public Broadcasting, which is part of the Public Broadcasting System in the US. The article was published around the time that the invitations to the coronation were made public where Camilla is referred to as Queen without the consort addition. In my opinion, there's really nothing new in it to add to this discussion. I think it is aimed primarily at American audiences who might not be as familiar with details regarding titles etc of the British Royal Family.

Ah thanks! , so op had to fish for an American publication to try and convince everyone in the U.K. who understands U.K. royal titles that she is correct even in the face of insurmountable evidence to the contrary!

To be fair to the OP, there is a lot of British content that displays ignorance on these issues, and some of it is on MN. At least this article is somewhat measured, if a bit naive in places.

That's beside the point. We all know The Queen Mother had been Queen Elizabeth. She was George VI's first wife, so of course she was known as Queen. However, you must know that it had been expected that Camilla would become 'Princess Consort'. The Queen then announced that it was her dearest wish for Camilla to be known as 'Queen Consort' when the time came. This was duly announced, yet her true title has never been used.

Her true title is Queen Consort, as with the wife of George VI, who was also 'Queen Consort', and was referred to during her husband's lifetime as The Queen, or Queen Elizabeth, or when out and about with her husband in their official capacities, The King and Queen.

When Elizabeth Windsor became Queen Elizabeth II, her mother became known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to distinguish the two Elizabeths.

Queen Consort is a distinction that is necessary only on paper, to denote a woman who is not a queen in her own right as Elizabeth II was.

Yes, consort with a lower case c.

He was never granted the title Prince Consort, though that was his role.

I think it was dishonest and manipulative of him.

Camilla has earned the respect of the public through her own efforts, by keeping her head down and doing the job. I think it would be wrong to mistake that for affection, or that people have “come around”.

Charles hired a PR person (Mark Bolland) a few years after Diana's death to oversee the rehabilitation of the image of Camilla (and by extension his own reputation). None of the vast improvement in the perception of the couple would have happened so smoothly without the expertise that was brought in.

Camilla is a Queen Consort, as opposed to a Queen Regnent.

The Queen Mother was a Queen Consort.

The only reason the press kept calling Camilla Queen Consort for the first few weeks/months is because the longest reigning British Queen had just died and every time a headline said the Queen is doing x, everyone got confused about how the dead Queen was on an engagement.

Camilla was the Princess of Wales for decades but didn't use it in public because of Diana's association with the title. Camilla was still the Princess of Wales though.

So even if they had gone with the original suggestion of calling her Princess Consort she would still have been Queen Camilla just not using the title.

The second the late Queen Elizabeth died Camilla as the wife of a King became Queen Camilla.

Iirc, Camilla was never accorded the title Princess of Wales.

Upon her marriage to Charles, her title was Duchess of Cornwall.

She never publicly used it as a title but the wife of the Prince of Wales is automatically the Princess of Wales.

It’s not a title that is bestowed - it’s just an automatic title.

In deference to the public opinion over Diana she never used it publicly.

Messedupmyusernameagain · 10/09/2026 07:58

Yes that's what I thought- the Prince of Wales's wife is automatically Princess of Wales so she was Princess of Wales. She was also Duchess of Cornwall, as is Kate.

I agree. I think he quietly used the ' Diana was unstable' narrative too. She may have been but who wouldn't be? If William and Kate divorce the same thing will be said of her. It will never be Williams fault. ( not that I'm saying they will divorce I don't think they will- but hypothetically)

No wife of the Prince of Wales is accorded the title in their own right.

The wife of the Prince of Wales is automatically HRH The Princess of Wales.

This was a title Camilla had alongside Duchess of Cornwall, and all of Charles’ other titles. She was styled as Duchess of Cornwall.

In the same way the Queen Mother was titled HRH Queen Elizabeth, but styled as HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother so save any public confusion with her daughter (in the court circular they were always referred to as HM The Queen and HM Queen Elizabeth).

MagicMarkers · 10/09/2026 08:25

Do you remember when they put a crown on Camilla's head during the Coronation? That was a big clue.

Elieza · 10/09/2026 08:32

i don’t care whether shes referred to as queen or queen consort. it makes no odds to me.

Wrong. She was automatically the Princess of Wales as hiw wife, but chose not to use it as it was seen as too synonymous with Diana. Duchess of Cornwall was just an alternative title, they all have multiples to choose from.

Now she's Queen Camilla.
