Footage of Charlotte

Does anyone else feel really uncomfortable about the photos the RF have put out of Charlotte today? Likewise the photo of them all lying in the sand. I feel those photos should be personal . She’s only 11, on holiday and those moments should be private.

She wasn't ever the Spare.

I tell you who was never the actual spare - Harry - his highest position was 3rd.

But since George was born he has been dropping down the order.

bluegreygreen · 03/05/2026 17:52

she was never the spare in the way we see Harry as the spare - Anne grew up knowing she wouldn’t come to the throne

Anne was second in line until Andrew was born.

Harry was never higher than third.

Harry uses the Spare title to explain how he felt overlooked and unsupported more generally - I don’t think he ever thought he would be king

sunflowersintheday · 03/05/2026 17:56

Pippilongstocking2 · 03/05/2026 17:52

Yes but not for long in Anne’s case - only a few years till she dropped to 3 then 4

Anne was second for a few years and with modern life would never have thought she would be queen

i think you are looking at it as if there is a real chance - she would not have viewed it like that

look Henry 8 was not raised to be king - and he was alive in a time where it would be perfectly normal for first in line to die - just as happened

But you said she was never Spare and was never in the line of succession.
You are wrong on both counts.
She was higher than Harry - as pp have said, he was 3rd.
You can't say she would never have been the Monarch. Elizabeth and Charles could have died before 1960

Edited

I think whilst he may know he wouldn't ever be the king he absolutely thought he should be the king.

Why oh why is this so difficult to follow?
I put a link upthread to the LoS!
Do you think people don't know what the words "Spare" or "succession" mean?
It's really very strange!

Yes, I actually think that is the problem! 😬 I mean they still think Harry is the “spare” and he hasn’t technically been that ever! Not when the highest he’s ever been in the los is 3rd , the comment “an heir and a spare” was a joke anyway and only meant a “spare” to William.🤷‍♀️

Pippilongstocking2 · 03/05/2026 17:58

Lunde · 03/05/2026 17:48

That is nonsense - she was higher than Harry in the Los until she was 10

Nobody knew that the Queen would have more children 10 years after Anne was born
Charles 1948
Anne 1950
AMW 1960
Edward 1964

dont be so rude

of course she didn’t - her life style tells you

the spareness an old concept when death young was more prevalent - as said even Henry 8 wasn’t tutored to be king until he really was - so that’s how serious they took the spare concept

bluegreygreen · 03/05/2026 17:58

@Pippilongstocking2 You said 'she was never the spare in the way we see Harry as the spare'.
You did not say 'Harry felt he was the spare in a different way from Anne'.

The postings that followed have corrected your factual error.

It’s very contrived but then it always is. They use their children for PR.

This is better than them letting the children take selfies and have hugs from strangers like they did at Xmas though. That did make me feel uncomfortable.

I agree with this. The recent photos are fine in the grand scheme of things, although it’s a shame they have to release them at all. I have more of an issue with the behaviour at Xmas. I was really shocked that the children were taking photos and hugging people in the crowd and I hope they re think that for this year.

can we get back to the original point of the post

Harry has never been a true spare anyway! He’s never been higher than 3rd ! , I don’t mean to sound rude because I know that you agree about the children but honestly I’m quite shocked that you don’t understand or know how the line of succession works.

Yes. However, I think some people don't understand what the "line of succession" actually means. You're right about the "heir and spare" saying though!

I think the first few rows would have been a bit select

I thought it was lovely and human

they know we are subjects!

Yes, of course it's allowed. People were just trying to help you understand what the line of succession means.
I put a link upthread, if you're interested.

Highly unlikely!!!

if she writes an autobiography or has she will say she realises early on - I don’t think at ten years old she thought omg my mum and brother might dies out of nowhere

yes I got it wrong - I didn’t think she was in the line instead of 18th in line - I’ve already explained -

please stop derailing the original thread - ive said I got it wrong

He has. The 'heir and a spare' term has been around for a long time.
With primogeniture, the spare was the second son, and producing an heir and a spare was considered a good thing.

I disagree. The children are young and shouldn’t be put in that situation. A few photos on holiday is much better than hugging strangers.

I think they are kept a very good eye on by W and K and I don’t fear for them

they seem ok - haven’t read anything awful has happened by touching a few of us great unwashed 😂

True. It's worth looking at the LoS though.
Quite a drop from 2nd in line to 18th!
No whining on her part about that.

No I don’t think she ever wanted to do it

for me she’s had the best balance

I don’t need to look because I understand now - I know mumsnet is horrified tha I made such a mistake
