Footage of Charlotte

Does anyone else feel really uncomfortable about the photos the RF have put out of Charlotte today? Likewise the photo of them all lying in the sand. I feel those photos should be personal . She’s only 11, on holiday and those moments should be private.

It’s very contrived but then it always is. They use their children for PR.

This is better than them letting the children take selfies and have hugs from strangers like they did at Xmas though. That did make me feel uncomfortable.

Decacaffeinatednow · 02/05/2026 18:16

Part of the price they pay for their gilded cage.

Extend the logic and there'd be no child actors on TV or in film, ever. (Or in knitting patterns or Pamper ads.)

Can't get too worked up about it actually.

I wouldn’t let my kids be in the acting world at a young age, but I do think there’s a difference between a child being an actor where they play someone else, than them being shown in their personal life.

Charlotte was at our local leisure centre taking part in a trampoline competition recently and it was all very normal, even though Catherine was there. They are having a pretty well adjusted upbringing in comparison to Charles.

Louis was playing football one Saturday morning at a playing field near my home. Some parent blabbed about it to the local newspaper, which I thought was a shit thing to do as it would be easy for anyone to work out who he plays for and follow him around. However it did strike me that he will be mixing with all kinds of children through Saturday morning football and how it will be good for him. My children certainly had their eyes opened with some of the teams they played.

FrLarryDuff · 02/05/2026 19:25

It’s all carefully curated. They need to keep up interest and this sort of thing is a deal with the press.

The British press do not photograph the royals, especially the children, when 'off duty'. It's not a legal obligation, just a 'gentleman's agreement' which is mostly observed. Even if offered photographs of the Wales family 'out and about', no British newspaper would publish them.

Decacaffeinatednow · 02/05/2026 19:36

@IcedPurple
Newspapers may not but people with social media accounts obsessed with the RF have no such scruples

That's true, and a European publication might buy photos too. Remember those really intrusive photos of the Wales family on a skiing holiday in France a year or so ago?

But a PP said that a 'local newspaper' had been contacted about Louis. No way would they publish any photos of the royal children.

People have always said that she looks like her father, but I have never really seen the resemblance until this picture. William's mini me.

kscarpetta · 02/05/2026 19:41

This is how they make their income, they have to stay relevant and popular.

Personally I don't think adults should be able to exploit kids for money, whether they are public figures, royals, influencers etc but for the time being this is how some families make their living.

I believe they've sued in the past for such infringements so whilst there are obviously arseholes out there who would happily publish the photos hopefully the knowledge that they would pay heavily for doing so would stop that happening.

As grotty as the UK press can sometimes be they do seem to have struck a fair balance between publishing some photos at specific intervals throughout the year and allowing the children to grow up mostly out of the public eye.

They always do a short photoshoot on their Easter holidays that they then use for their birthday, anniversary and sometimes Christmas pictures. The pictures and very short video clip were clearly taken at the same time as the ones for Louis' recent birthday.

This year was the beach holiday in Cornwall - last years was in Norfolk although I think Charlotte chose a different picture from a hiking holiday.

The pearl clutching is ridiculous. Catherine got trolled mercilessly for taking and editing her own pictures - yet now they are pulled apart for hiring a professional for a few hours.

Overtheatlantic · 02/05/2026 19:44

They have a deal with the press to put out pictures of their kids at certain times.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 02/05/2026 19:48

I’m uncomfortable with the idea of a royal family in general, in part because I do think it must be horrible for the children (yes, I acknowledge that they are also incredibly privileged). But I’ve just gone and looked at this clip and I don’t think there’s anything particularly egregious here, especially given the situation she is in. I think we see very little of the royal children, all things considered.
William cannot abdicate on behalf of his underage children, they’re in the line of succession until they are old enough to have a say (or until there is no RF), so I think the amount of photos released is probably about right. And I’d hope that at 11 she’d have a say in choosing what was included.

JSMill · 02/05/2026 19:51

@IcedPurple I think you missed my point. No photos were provided but the date and location Louis was there was. It would be pretty easy to go onto the local football club’s website and find out their fixtures. From that, you could work out what team Louis played for. The press might respect the rules but unfortunately, members of the public may not.

She was at a swimming gala I attended last year as was Catherine. No press, no photos. I think that is the deal - the press get their carefully curated shots and the children get to live with some privacy. If they didn’t agree to these photo ops, they’d be chased down everywhere. Win-win.

That's exactly it. It's the game they and the press play, but better than being hounded.

tarheelbaby · 02/05/2026 19:57

W&C have chosen these photos/video for public release. Mercifully, UK press sticks to that.
W&C recognise the public interest and are addressing that. At age 11, Charlotte should have been given an opportunity to see them - I'd do that in their shoes. It's all pretty basic and also v anonymous: background shots are a ferry, lying on the ground.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 02/05/2026 19:59

I know what you mean OP- we’ve moved on a lot in the last 20 years with exposing children to press attention and this does seem a little wrong. We shouldn’t really know what the kids look like. There’s no need for them to do official engagements or photo shoots.

I wonder if when George is a parent, his children will be kept away from the public eye.

BridgetJonesV2 · 02/05/2026 20:06

There are "influencers" and families who use social media to sell every moment of their children's lives. Filming in the family home, bedrooms, holidays, days out and usually making themselves fairly identifiable in the process.

In comparison, William and Catherine give the media a small insight into their otherwise completely private lives - in order to keep the media at bay. If the children were never seen, there would be a furore to follow them everywhere. It's a trade off but a very good one as the children appear to have as normal lives as they are able to given their birth right. William must hate every part of this given the media hounding of his mother (that she herself encouraged at times).

Who would feel moved to drop everything and head down to Bracknell Forest for the chance to get a snap of Louis sulking 'cos the ref made a bad decision?

I think it is grand, and a sign that we've moved on from the idol-worship days of the 1960s, that the general public generally respects the RF and lets them get on with the normal stuff.

The people phoning the local paper? The local paper would have known the route to and from the school Louis goes to and what times and when, would have known about the football fixtures.... and wouldn't care. 'Cos it isn't news, and the British press have a deal with the RF to leave them alone.

In return, they get photos at agreed times. The photos and videos today actually protect Charlotte.

JSMill · 02/05/2026 20:19

@Rhaidimiddimgood points but it was still shitty of the parent who blabbered. Incidentally, it was in Wargrave, not Bracknell, thank you very much.

I know people in Twyford, just up the road from Wargrave, who regularly see Theresa and Philip May shopping in Waitrose unbothered by anyone.
