Agreed

FWIW Veterans in the UK can and do wear medals with suits on appropriate occasions and it's entirely iaw Royal British Legion protocol.

It's maybe time for those who haven't served to stop going down this particular rabbit hole, there are plenty other options for kicking H but his medal wearing isn't one of them.

Edited

Is that for me? , yes it’s true that I didn’t personally serve my dh did that and my only contribution was being comforting and not showing the level of fear I felt every time he was gone!
and it isn’t a matter of what is allowed or not allowed it’s a matter of respect and tradition, this may not bother some people but it does bother some.
Harry can swan around in his medals if he wants and I can find it disrespectful if I want.
of Harry’s 4 medals only one is the standard service medal all members of the forces receive if they are in a combat zone, the other 3 are jubilee medals from the queen, why is he wearing those when he has distanced himself and isn’t representing the royal family?

They presumably won't have been paid for the 'charity' visits

Maybe not as such, @IcedPurple, but given the emphasis on veterans' appearances I'm another who's wondering if Invictus have stumped up for any of the costs

And it won't have cost quite so much to go that far to merch outfits if someone else is paying ...

Yes, I agree that their 'expenses' will have been funded by someone else, likely Invictus at least in part.

I still don't see how this trip could make them serious money though. The 'girls' weekend' looks like a damp squib and she'd have to sell an awful lot of navy dresses to make any significant dent into the Montecito Manor mortgage.

My dh did tours of both Afghanistan and Iraq ! , normal military do not receive a medal just for showing up!!! 🙄 and the ones he’s wearing are not for that!!
educate yourself!

Edited

What are you on about @jeffgoldblum ? Every soldier who served in Iraq and Afghanistan on Op TELIC and Op HERRICK received medals for it, literally for turning up. They also receive medals for simply being in the army for certain events such as the jubilees.
You didn't possibly think your husband received his operation medals for gallantry, did you?

Transcript of what he said

Thanks @Lostallhistory . I found it very hard to hear what H said. Unfortunately having read the transcript I still haven't a real clue as to what he is saying. 😂
But I appreciate the effort !

My dh has 5 medals from each tour he has done and one issued because after his compound was bombed he stayed behind and dug his friends and fellow servicemen out of the rubble while under fire! So yes I do believe he received a medal for gallantry!
and there are rules that serving raf service men have to follow with regards to wearing of uniforms in civilian areas.
retired veterans who attend military events obviously don’t have to wear their full uniforms because obviously they don’t usually have them anymore but some still do and others like in the previous picture wear either the top half or the beret that formed part of the uniform ( most do keep their berets dh still has some of his )

Well done to your husband, you and the nation are proud of him. But my point still stands that every soldier who went on the Iraq and/or Afghan tours were issued with medals for them, "for turning up" which you so vehemently denied was a thing. Gallantry is rewarded with different medals, such as in the case of your husband.
You are also wrong to state that former military cannot wear medals with suits, they absolutely can for certain events.
I personally think Harry looks an absolute tool turning up wearing his medals, but that's beside the point.

I’d love to hear your expertise in the area if you’d like to share it.

I'm sure the excuse for any wreath laying will be "from Invictus" ....

BTW as an aside people are mentioning medals - objectively he's just as entitled as many to some of the gongs (e.g. any relevant Jubilee medals) and surely he's at least entitled to whatever Campaign medal got awarded for Afghanistan.

I don't think even H would wear medals for gallantary that he didn't earn.

He does however frequently wear his Knight Cross around his neck on a red ribbon, 'for service to the Queen and the Monarchy' that he didn't earn. His granny gave it to him for his 30th in a nice, private ceremony at the Palace.

(This makes him a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).)

I don't pretend to have any expertise whatsoever, but I know from experience, that military absolute are awarded medals "just for turning up" and that former military can wear their medals on suits for certain events. This is apparent often, to anyone with eyes, watching televised events.

I agree about what it may be making them. According to "sky news insiders" M is being paid $380,000 AUS for the Masterchef appearance , $272k US. Plus I think Iread the girl's night out $150k or 250 - can't find this - and I think I had read Harry would be getting something like $50k for his speech. + frock commission. Now in the grand scheme of things for them, I wouldn't think a great deal , but it gets them huge publicity and I assume possibly to be used as a template for other trips or other merching opportunities . I'm speculating. & it means they can royal around being feted and treated as if they are important , upon which one can put no price 😉

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is set to be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to appear on a single episode of MasterChef Australia.

REVEALED: Meghan’s massive MasterChef pay packet

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is reported to be cashing in on her time Down Under, with the former actress and royal set to be paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single episode of an Aussie TV show.

I don't believe those figures. 50K for Harry's speech sounds plausible enough, but the others seem like they were simply made up.

Remember we were told they got 100 million from Netflix? Turns out it was nothing of the sort. How would a TV programme with a relatively small audience be in a position to pay hundreds of K for a single appearance from someone who is not a star in the field? Same with the 'girls' weekend'. It won't even have netted that amount, let alone been able to pay Meghan that huge a fee.

As for publicity, they're already famous. This visit got a lot of coverage in Australia, but that's a relatively small market. Was anyone in America really paying attention? And who, in this economic climate, is going to pay a grand for a rather ordinary navy dress just because a 'duchess' wore it in Melbourne?

Surely any fees will go to charity?! They won't pocket all that dosh will they?!

Such virtue signalling clowns will surely make a big song and dance over who they will donate too, won't they? Confused

At least they haven't had to sit in a cinema in their ballgown and tails.. yet.

At “certain events” being the operative words. Presumably they don’t wear them to merchandise themselves for commercial profit on private publicity tours. I also presume they would not wear them if their commander told them not to in prescribed circumstances.

jeffgoldblum · 16/04/2026 12:53

For those who can’t be bothered to read! The screenshots ! Harry is not some veteran who rocked up to show support! He was given the honour of laying a wreath.
he is not allowed to wear his military uniform or medals in a official capacity.

London, Remembrance Sunday, RBL organised, not sure which year.

Now can we put medals on suits etc to bed before I start having some sympathy for H

Edited

Ps you are aware those men are not actually wearing suits and are wearing most of their original uniforms?
and it was London remembrance 2015 , did you really search google just to stick it to me?

It’s exactly this sort of public/private, official/unofficial, commercial/non commercial confusion BP needs to get a grip on.

AprilMizzel · 16/04/2026 13:01

I'm surprised Masterchef wants to be associated with Meghan - she wouldn't be my obvious culinary expert - fact that they do does suggest they feel she still has some kudos.

I do wonder if the RF is just letting them dig a deep enough hole themsleves that when they do take any further distancing action all save the most ardent suporters thinks it a long overdue move. They do after all keep showing us who they actually are.

BasiliskStare · 16/04/2026 13:03

@IcedPurple - I wasn't saying those figures were true , just what I had come across - pure speculation. I'm just wondering whether these sorts of merching tours and other appearances are another bit of spaghetti flung at the wall to see which money making ideas will stick. And it keeps them front and centre. Alternatively , it could just end up with more people getting fed up with them - the hospital visit in particular seems to have gone down badly in various places.

ShamedBySiri · 16/04/2026 13:03

Isn’t it fortunate The Queen didn’t gift Meghan a welcome to the RF tiara like she did for Fergie?
One can only imagine the times that tiara would be wheeled out!

(I wonder why she didn’t 🤔 - I think Sophie got one too)

Of course if you are no longer serving you don't have a commander anymore and you go with whatever might be laid down by the event organisers in any instructions.

I'm not sure the writer of that "Royal Observer" piece has quite got their head around the protocols either.

I think in the real world the POV of most veterans regarding an event like ANZAC day would be regardless of whether you are serving or not, and regardless of how long ago you served, you can wear whatever medals you're entitled to, if you want to, but whatever you do don't wear what you are not entitled to....

I don't think H has broken any of those rules but some seem to intent on somehow finding fault.

Janiie · 16/04/2026 13:05

This will jjust make the gulf between them all even wider. Does H seriously think they'll be reconciliation when they pull stunts like this. He shoots himself in the foot time and time again.

StartupRepair · 16/04/2026 13:05

MasterChef does bring in celebrities as one off guest judges. They had Katy Perry on once.

If it had been on Anzac Day fine but it's over a week away. Laying a wreath as if he has some official public role seems inappropriate although I admit I do not know the military ins and outs with these things. It's just the optics isn't it. Attention seeking and entitled which is his USP.
