Seeing as you say you are so safety conscious it’s bizarre that you don’t maintain and service an old gas boiler which could literally be fatal, but hey, you do you.

I prefer ro listen to the advice of gas cerified engineers who have seen my boiler than some random on mumsnet thanks and through the yrs when ive had someone over for something else (plumbing) and they are also gas engineers they have taken a look anyway.

.

You have to admit - this The Most Random derail the RF board has ever seen. I am blown away with admiration of the subject- matter and tenacity.

bluegreygreen · 11/03/2026 21:59

The African Parks thing bothers me - not just the horribleness of the abuse stories.

Harry is a director of AP, not just a patron. I hope he does properly understand the legal difference that makes.

I know that sounds horribly patronising, but so much of his charity work was set up when he was in the RF - and, as pointed out upthread, the men in grey suits did a lot of work for him.

Seeing as my husband is a registered Gas Safe Engineer with our own Heating and Plumbing company, I’m not just some random on mumsnet, I know what I am talking about. No Gas Safe Engineer would ever say it’s perfectly safe not to service and maintain a 40 year old boiler, they just wouldn’t, you can’t argue that point but no doubt you will try. It’s interesting that you have now changed your story from never getting your boiler serviced to now getting your plumber to “take a look”.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 11/03/2026 22:05

Anyway sorry folks for the derail but as I work in the heating and plumbing industry I hate to see unsafe practices being defended on here as it really is dangerous. Back to Harry and Meghan’s nonsense!

My2cents1975 · 11/03/2026 19:52

Let's examine H's track record.

At Sentebale, H chose to film a polo fundraising event for his Netflix project...Polo. Sophie Chandauka informed the public of the issues the charity faced including moving venue and being expected to provide PR cover when M's effort to insert herself into the trophy presentation was commented upon in social and traditional media.

At African Parks, the government of Chad cut ties and leveled accusations including serious financial misconduct, a disrespectful attitude and failing to curb poaching, but went on to resolve the issues and reinstate African Parks weeks later. That is aside from the unresolved abuse of the Baka people in Congo by African Parks employees.

IMHO, H's track record to date does not inspire much confidence.

You're absolutely right about all of this, My2cents1975, but I suppose I just hoped that injured and disabled veterans who've already given so much would be one group they'd resist grifting off

Note that's hoped though, as in past tense ... i've since learned not to be so silly as to expect it would ever happen

bluegreygreen · 11/03/2026 22:31

To be honest, @Puzzledandpissedoff, I've spent a long time hoping that issues with their charities have been down to carelessness rather than anything worse.

The way money was funnelled through Archewell to other charities made me uneasy.

Harry's public behaviour around Sentebale was unpleasant, and I can only imagine what the private behaviour was like.

Thoughts on African Parks are above.

Money issues around Invictus I'm unclear about. Any accounts I've seen have said that no money for expenses have gone to patrons. I haven't seen the 2025 accounts yet.

If you say so, could be making it up for all I know. End of the day I have had them round and ill listen to their advice thanks, I didnt say what they said and no boiler is perfectly safe something can fail at any point.

Someone taking a look isnt a service though is it. So im not changing my story at all.

Im comfortable with my decisions thanks and have right cover and money set aside.

ThePoshUns · 11/03/2026 22:44

Ffs can we stop talking about boilers? Start a bloody thread about it if you must.

Given your background, how many boilers would Monecito Mansion need, do you think?

SunlessSea · 11/03/2026 23:27

Just had to add to the advice to GoldBthehypo to get the boiler serviced. The Spectre of of not maintaining it properly would worry me greatly

Yes.
Not having it serviced could well come back to bite GoldBthehypo on the bum.

I've heard that it's hard to detect a leak and you can slowly be poisoning yourself - confusion, spelling mistakes, similar things that you otherwise might put down to old age or worse😬

I absolutely love the description of Meghan in the advert. It's got such strong David Brent (from 'The Office') vibes - cringy and funny in equal measure.

Edit: punctuation typo

Absolutely yes, the Brentess of Sussex. And indeed Winnersh and Taplow.

hepsitemiz · 12/03/2026 08:58

“A fireside chat with Meghan and I”??

I hope that’s not a quote from a journalist…. They’d need sending straight back to Grammar 101. That said, Megs herself can’t tell the difference between subject and object - maybe that line came from her?

I have friends who lost their teenage daughter to CO poisoning whilst staying with her grandmother. Presumably related to the aged water heater in the bathroom, one of those old fashioned burn and heat on demand things.

Back on topic , Harry's involvement with the African charities (Sentabale, African Parks - don't know if there are others) or lack of puzzles me. Pre-Meghan he was all about Africa, obviously they had that trip soon after getting together and no doubt others pre-marriage. Have they had any private trips there since? Public trips - there was the "No one asked me how I was" trip, and Harry visited Sentabale a year or two ago, before the big split, on his own, and then went off radar for a few days, presumably staying with friends of going on a private safari or something.
I can't remember when/where he said it, but didn't he say something about a disagreement with William who claimed Africa was HIS bag, and off limits to Harry or something along those lines?
Obviously Covid put the brakes on any travel for a couple of years but I find it odd he doesn't seem to want to go there any more, whether for charitable reasons or for private holidays. (Sorry, forgot about the Nigeria tour, but I'm not sure I count that). Strange that he went so many years without personal public involvement with his two big charities there (as in public visits). I would think Princess Anne and Sophie have had more trips there over the same period with the various charities they are involved with, Sophie has just recently visited Somalia and Kenya as part of her work related to survivors of sexual violence in conflict.

corblimeyguvnr · 12/03/2026 09:26

I've just read a piece about Emma Weymouth the Marchioness of Bath. Seemingly way back in 2015 her husband's mother asked him if he was sure about what he was doing to 400 years of bloodline ( in reference to the colour of Emma's skin) . Makes you wonder, doesn't it ?.....

Imagine being appointed Vice President of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, to focus on youth empowerment, education and gender equality and also becoming the Patron of The National Theatre and now being reduced to literally selling selfies, clearly living her best life.

Oh come on now, be fair. It's a bit more than that... she's also going to be spouting cliched bollocks inspirational words beside a campfire. Just think how enhanced those suckers lucky people's lives will be who have paid actual money to be told "be the change you wish to see in the world" and "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade".

FallenNight · 12/03/2026 10:37

GoldBthehypo · 11/03/2026 15:10

Actually the difference of paying slightly more outweighs cost of installing a new one. I have lived in my house for 12yrs now if I had replaced it when I moved in spending on average £3000 (as its London) with average lifespan of new boilers being 10-15yrs (but we all know they break quickly) I would be in 3yrs time looking to spend another £3000 to replace it. So £6k on replacing boilers whilst this one has been running fine.

Meanwhile last yr i spent only £394 in total on gas (excl standing charge) so even if i paid 40% more due to it being 40% less efficient thats only an extra £156 a yr.

It would take me 19yrs to recoup the cost of getting a new boiler installed and if i had to replace at 15yrs im actually losing money.

Besides I dont even bother getting it serviced so extra saving there. The money is set aside incase I need to replace it but why bother its cheaper for me to keep it until it breaks and then replace it. These boilers were built to last and rarely breakdown compared to newer models.

So no its not always better to replace

Be careful with not servicing too. My folks had a 40 year old boiler that they didn't bother servicing. It blew up and burnt down half the house.

There are a lot of variables with a house of that size, I will speak to my DH and report back.
