He's not the head of state, or direct heir, so no reason for a state funeral even before current issues.

ETA not sure that the heir would have a state funeral these days

Following on from my post above, I've now seen the wording of the Lib Dem motion (see photo).

It's a 'humble address' - the same type of motion as used by the Conservatives to force the publication of the Mandelson papers a couple of weeks ago. It's a process used to force a government department to release documents.
https://archive.is/JaPNZ

There was a lot of direct discussion about AMW and his behaviour during the debate.

A couple of thoughts:
-The post of Special Representative for Trade and Investment was not set up for AMW - the Duke of Kent held the role for years, apparently very successfully.
-I'm glad the motion was passed, though sorry they didn't take the opportunity to include relevant papers during the trade envoy years.
-I see they've finally discovered that 'Erskine May' doesn't prevent them discussing the RF in a formal motion. I'm sorry it took so long.

That’s sort of good news 👍

If anything happens to him, would he get a state funeral?

No that’s only for HOS

Pretty sure it would a private event.

damsello · 24/02/2026 17:28

Is it just me or are the (probably by convention) lines of the motion mentioned above just SO obsequious and bowing and scraping, and begging the King to allow a democracy to operate properly via Parliament?

OK I'm overthinking it. Possibly misinterpreting too. But still.

RainbowBagels · 24/02/2026 17:35

There are other non Royal Trade envoys too apparently who are very effective. One of the speakers in the debate said that she knew one who was not allowed to claim Yellow Fever vaccinations as expenses when he was on a TE trip just in case he got Yellow Fever on holiday while the vaccine was still effective, yet AMW was getting prostitutes and golfing holidays signed off on expenses everywhere he went!

So, when is KC3 going to be questioned?

His senior staff?

William?

Why is Fergie allowed to breeze in and out of expensive Spas and when is she going to be forced back to answer questions?

Or am I being really naive?

They seem chilled like what happens next has all been sorted and agreed

They’re chilled because they do know what happens next. Nothing, business as usual. I think all this arresting and investigating is a pretence yo try and quiet the masses - there’s all this talk about them not being above the law but I think they actually are.

My guess is SF will not be being charged for her stay at the £13,000 a day spa, as the owners probably have the dubious honour of being her ‘friends’.

Whilst I agree with you about SF probably not paying for her spa stay , I do think that AMW will receive some sort of punishment. I don’t mean anything to do with titles / houses but through the legal process .
The whole situation is so awful , so serious , so disgusting that I cannot see it being swept under the carpet .
The RF must know that the public simply wouldn’t tolerate a whitewash .

Mm. I see where you’re coming from but HOW will the public ‘not tolerate’ this being swept under the carpet once the inevitable result is ‘charges dropped due to lack of evidence’? The reality is we will tolerate it because we won’t have a choice. William’s accession, whenever and however that comes, will be seen as the best end to this mess we can get, so we’ll tell our (collective) selves that having him and his lovely family on the throne is an acceptable result and they’ll just carry on.

Short of a revolution, which is not going to happen, the RF are very secure in their position, and very sure that W&C will go on soon enough to win the public back round - The only spanner in the works there possibly being Catherine’s health, as I’ve said before.

Mylovelygreendress · 24/02/2026 19:41

How many people thought that KC would remove AMW’s titles ? I recall several debates on MN ( and other places) that it would be too complicated, it was unthinkable etc and yet he did .
I am of the opinion there is enough evidence based on what we have - so far- seen.

Benchdogs · 24/02/2026 19:45

The media now seem to be concentrating on assuring us that AMW ‘will have no place in King William’s monarchy’. Its started already, there’ll be no real consequences of this for any of them.

Everything was too complicated, apparently. From removing various titles rather than him agreeing to not use them, to having his princeship removed. All of which were, in the end, very easy to do.

Then it was said that removing him from the line of succession was complicated and too time consuming. Yet it's being looked into and two commonwealth nations so far have said they support it. So I imagine that will end up being relatively easy when it happens.

This is a good step. Loving the "That he will be graciously pleased to dig up dirt on members of the royal family" phrasing, which must be the traditional way to beseech the monarch. It also sounds pointed in the context (I know it's not meant to).

Interview with Andrew Lownie.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/feb/24/andrew-mountbatten-windsor-biographer-andrew-lownie-entitled

“That’s what the Chinese and Russian secret services realised – that the easiest vulnerability of the British establishment is the royal family,” says Lownie. “There’s no scrutiny. They’re greedy. They’re short of money.” And in Andrew’s case in particular, “they’re kind of immoral because of the way they’ve been brought up. And they mixed with lots of important people.”

My view of the RF used to be 80% apathy /10% Ooh a gold coach!/10% what would you replace them with?

Now they seem to be a liability.

NewAgeNewMe · 24/02/2026 19:53

Short of money? Blooming heck!

I think 'short of money' here means 'had plenty of money but not enough to fund the billionaire lifestyle to which they aspire'.

Titles that the King could remove he did, and there was a bit of a fudge over the Dukedom, as the government didn't want to allocate time to it.
Recently it looked like they might do it for Mandelson, so I wondered if they would word it such that it would include Royal dukes as well, but I think they've abandoned it again.

The line of succession change is interesting. It takes approval of 15 commonwealth realms, and there are different mechanisms in each. According to one historian I was reading, in 2011(?) when they wanted to change the letters patent to remove male preference (sorry can't remember official terminology) it took 11 months, and restarted discussions about reparations.

The things they must see in the Middle East probably make them feel quite poor.

Gen Z is not very impressed with William and my generation (millennial) seems mostly indifferent.

The monarchy will likely not end as a result of the current AMW scandal. Instead, I think it will be a build-up of lots of things over an extended period, probably the most influential of which will be growing apathy and downright dislike of the royals from the younger generations, especially as the 55+ crowd die out in the next 1-2 decades and with them, their unquestioning support.

Prince William is desperate to connect with a new generation – but it’s not working

In a Radio 1 interview this week, the future king hoped by talking about his mental health he could connect to a new audience. But, as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is arrested and the Epstein scandal continues to engulf his family, he looked more remote...

I can't read the article as its behind a paywall but given a lot of Gen Z consider millenials to be "cringe", William may be wasting his time! Plus as you say, they simply don't care about the royals.

Me neither ( oh I’m telling a slight fib! , I saw half the first episode!) but I have sadly met people who think it’s real ! And I’m sad to say that a few posters have clearly used parts of it ( and downtown abbey strangely) in their arguments 🤷‍♀️

I don't have Netflix so haven't seen it but recently there been lots of clips doing the rounds on YouTube/ social media to give snippets.

Brenda and Phil, on "Porchey" for instance
