Kate's birthday video "Mother Nature"

The PR machine is pushing Catherine as being the Queen of Nature, so wholesome and pure, and ending the video with "Mother Nature" just seems so forced to me.

I'm not really sure why she would release a 90 second video of this nature. Anyone else?

The video’s trash but trying to impose a ranking system of suffering associated with cancer is really disgusting. This woman hasn’t entered your made-up Olympics of Suffering.

No - because they have freedom of choice. There are plenty of famous people’s children who live completely normal lives and are completely anonymous to the press. They don’t have their future career predetermined at birth. And it’s not only the lack of choice in career it’s the insane level of press interest - they’re already being cast in the press in their roles (Louis is the cheeky/naughty one for example). Then you have the so called fans hanging around to tell them that their grandmother who they never met is proud of them.

Yes there are celebrities like the kardashians who shove their children in front of the cameras (and I also think that is abuse) but are you honestly telling me you can’t see the difference in expectation placed on the royal kids?! The prime minister has two children and we don’t even know their names.

Already on this thread somebody has mentioned the abdication - that was 90 years ago. Do you honestly thing George could do a Bruce Springsteen’s kid and go and be a firefighter?

There’s plenty of stuff that was a majority opinion at one point or another. Like women not being allowed to vote. Using this as an argument to try and shut down any discussion of the royal family that isn’t 100% positive is bizarre.

The OP didn’t start a thread saying how she loved the video but how she thought it seemed forced. People are having a discussion about that and how they interpreted it.

I’m happy if people liked it and it spoke to them, the world always needs reminding about the importance of nature - but that doesn’t mean this isn’t part of palace PR. It’s complete legitimate to discuss the vast disparities in access to nature or the perceived hypocrisy coming from a member of a family known for hunting and liberal use of air travel.

How angry, nasty, thick and unpleasant some folk on this thread are. It's the modern way, I suppose, being a sweary moron online to fill your time instead of doing something positive in the world.

Its because they are unelected and have been imposed on us. If they were elected the money they spent would have to be accounted for such as the prime ministers accommodation etc. Capitalism favours the rich of course, but that is different to an unelected family having access to large amounts of public money and saying we should be grateful to them.

I love being outdoors in nature and it helps my mental health, but I agree with others that the video is a sickening, self indulgent, contrived load of shite.

My nan loves the Royals but she didn’t have anything positive to say about this video or the others in the series.

Do I think the late Queen (Princess Elizabeth), in the late 1940s during a world war in which British people were ‘doing their bit’ and some making enormous sacrifices, joining the ATS and ‘doing her bit’ was more relatable to the average person than Harry joining the Army in the 2000s, yes I do. Having said that, if Harry wasn’t such a blithering idiot we’d probably be unaware of how sheltered and privileged he was in the Army.

Is illness a great leveller and death the ultimate leveller? Yes. Do I have sympathy for anyone in her position health wise? Of course.

I’ve had my own serious mental health problems and I completely agree that being outside, simply observing and ‘being’ is deeply healing and restorative.

I just think this video is tone deaf and cringey and I say that as a Royal supporter.

I like it as do all the other pagans and lovers of nature here in Glastonbury. At least Kate was a normal person before she joined the royal family and she got plenty of stick for that from the upper classes. She wasnt born into privilege. I think people are being unkind.

She wasn’t a “normal” person. She went to Marlborough College a boarding school and one of the most expensive schools in the country.

Who would have believed a 90 second video would enrage people so much. It is a bit soppy, but it’s harmless. And it’s obviously well meant.

She’s not trying to sell or promote anything, she’s not whining about her misfortunes, she’s just inviting people to share the restorative benefits of being in Nature on her birthday.

The comments on this thread have nothing to do with republicanism and it’s an insult to genuine republicans to pretend they do.

If Kier Starmer/Boris Johnson/Nigel Farage/Maggie Thatcher/Winston Churchill/David Lloyd George/insert politician of choice paid off a family members accuser and protected them from legal consequences we could vote them out. Or at least their unpopularity would lead to their own party removing them for fear of losing an election.

We have no such recourse with the monarchy - especially given the fetishisation of avoiding abdication (which ironically meant we dodged having a supporter of the Nazi party on the throne during WW2 so was actually probably for the best!). Prince William could randomly punch a granny in the face tomorrow/be photographed doing lines of coke off a corgi/go on a racist rant/do whatever it is you would find unacceptable as a head of state etc and he’d still be our next king.

From a taxpayers point of view I’d also imagine we’d only be paying the elected head of state a salary - we don’t pay for the prime minister’s family in perpetuity.

What has been apparent is that those of us who have criticised the video or the monarchy have been called angry, cynical, thick etc etc. by supporters of the monarchy.

She is trying to promote something though. The benefits of being in nature, is one aspect of that promotion.

I was just about to post this. And like you I joined Republic when a lawful and agreed with the Police protest was suddenly everyone arrested and held.

Also I’m not sure what a ‘true republican’ is either - as far as I’m aware it’s a belief that power should be held by an elected head of state rather than an hereditary power. Is there some sort of club I should be aware of? Secret handshake etc?

I agree with you in respect that I don't see anger here - all I see is jealousy and bitterness. I don't believe for one second that any Republican country would not have layers, tiers and a hierarchy. It's proven over time and place and naive in the extreme to believe there would be a level playing field.

Of course getting rid of the monarchy wouldn’t result in an equal society - no society has ever been truly equal, its human nature. But that’s not an argument to retain constitutional hereditary privilege.

I suppose this begs the question then - did this help prepare her for her role? To understand that the role she plays is a difficult one - let's contrast with Meghan who came from a totally different background and failed at this unless she had never intended to stay? The outcry that this video has created - can you imagine if it were Meghan doing it but only talking about herself? I can't imagine. She really is Marie Antoinette.
