Trump State Visit

A space for thoughts.

My first is that being at Windsor might make it easier to host a foreign leader. Which then begs the question as to whether in the modern age we really need Buckingham Palace. None of the royals like living there and I bet you'd make a fortune hiring it out for events and tourists.

Whilst i find Catherine's coat dresses a little boring it makes sense to have a sort of uniform.

Must be the most expensive fairground ride in the history of the world.

FatAgain · 18/09/2025 09:30

O I can’t possibly see how Kate looks ill. Just drama.

if say though that William has aged hugely over the past couple of years

milveycrohn · 18/09/2025 09:32

"This private carriage procession round the grounds of Windsor Castle is embarrassing, like a fairground ride to entertain the US President. The whole point of a #royal carriage procession is so the public can see you. #StateVisit #DonaldTrump."
After the shooting of Charlie Kirk, security has to be very tight, due to copy cat killers.
It does not really matter whether you like Trump or not. He is the elected president of the US, one of our closest allies, and this is what our Gov (and Foreign Office) have arranged. This bit is what being a 'working' royal means. That they are there on behalf of the Gov, etc
In the past the late Queen had to host various dubious leaders, such as Idi Amin, the Ceaușescus, etc

padronpepper · 18/09/2025 09:35

@milveycrohn
The fairground procession was never going to be anything but a scoot around Windsor Castle grounds. Kirk's death has nothing to do with it.
Trump was never going to be exposed to the members of the public who oppose his visit.

I think I would be.

I've had plenty of experience being charming to People I Do Not Like for most of my jobs and also being married to DH who has had some international jobs in the past. Ones where you have to act the charming Pleasant Hostess in the face of much provocation.

I'd be brilliant at being Royal re that.

Being Royal and having everyone trash my weight, my outfits, my hair, my family, my education and discussing if i am too thin / too tall/ too whatever. Not so much.

The money would be all right though.

Agree, a lot of people have jobs where they have to be civil to people they’d otherwise not give the time of day to. We will all speak to and make small talk with people who unbeknown to us have done really shitty things. This is just that on steroids. Soft diplomacy .

I wish I looked as ill and haggard as some posters think the POW seems.

I know, right?

I’d love to see what all these people calling Catherine “haggard” actually look like, because she looked absolutely stunning last night.

You can dislike the dress, be tired of the same tiara, you can even say you dislike her; but calling her haggard? That’s just mean and flat-out untrue. The general consensus everywhere else is that she looked beautiful and well.

And even if someone genuinely thought otherwise, where’s the compassion? The basic understanding that she’s recovering from cancer, chemo, and the stress of being forced to reveal her diagnosis before she was ready? Of course she’s not always going to look like she in her 20s or 30s, or even pre cancer. It’s called ageing and she’s doing it gracefully.

These posters (so many new names, by the way) are being very transparent with their little campaign, and honestly, it’s laughable. 🤣 We see you!

jumpingthehighjump · 18/09/2025 09:39

^^. This

The government were not going to parade Trump around where the masses can see him because there definitely would be protests as he is deeply unpopular

So they have just laid on a sanitised Disney version of everything behind closed doors so he can feel important. He's so thick he probably thinks we are all in awe of him. Whereas anyone sensible thinks he is just a joke

I don't think she looks haggard at all. I think she is a very pretty woman but she looks unwell to me. Her dress etc was lovely last night. But maybe she actually is unwell. By commenting on it doesn't mean I'm trying to tear her down. We don't all have to agree.

It's funny but people seem to have no issue with commenting on Camilla, Charles or William.

And even the sycophantic Richard Eden the pro-royal Diary Editor of the Daily Mail, wrote on X: "This private carriage procession round the grounds of Windsor Castle is embarrassing, like a fairground ride to entertain the US President. Utterly pathetic to pander to his narcissistic pathetic toddler personality.

There is no Princes Trust anymore

I’m tired, so shoot me for having a senior moment.

No point playing pigeon chess Wee.

padronpepper · 18/09/2025 10:03

Which journalist is going to ask Trump about Peter Mandelson?
I'd say Keir Starmer is shitting bricks already.

According to the news last night Epstein or anything related to him is off limits for both. Neither one wants to be asked about it - not least because Trump views it all as a conspiracy to implicate republicans. He’s hardly going to turn around and say it’s real when it’s a left wing person but not when it’s a right wing person!

Then take it up with the government of the day.

The royals are doing as they are told or advised. If you feel so strongly as you seem to, write to your MP, and ask about a referendum to abolish the monarchy.

I’m a constitutional monarchist until such time as a proper thought out alternative.

Having seen the likes of Trump, Putin and Erdogan I’ll stick with what we have for now.

Im on regular writing basis with my MP re Brexit & the damage caused to the economy, that he starts his letters with “as you know Mrs NewAge, we differ on our views…”

Seeing as the monarchy don’t step in when they are supposed to (see Johnson illegally suspending parliament), what do they do? Walk around in fancy dresses costing us money?

NewAgeNewMe · 18/09/2025 10:16

Hard agree with the late queen. She should have stopped Johnson’s shenanigans. Disgraceful PM.

No point playing pigeon chess Wee.

I agree and I had decided not to reply to anymore nonsense after my last post, I can’t be bothered with it.

Im just back from a grandchild’s school run and having a cuppa before I go out on another one. It’s a great day, the weekend starts tomorrow, and there’s nothing like little grandchildren in the back of your car to remind you who’s important and who’s not. ❤️

sminted · 18/09/2025 10:30

Speaking of people looking ill, Trump looks remarkably well for someone pushing 80. I wonder if it’s because he’s tee-total.

I thought this, he looks pretty good for his age, maybe the fake tan helps. Probs also has tweakments.

sminted · 18/09/2025 10:32

It's funny but people seem to have no issue with commenting on Camilla, Charles or William.

The protectiveness over W&K is so weird! It's ok to disagree, we all have different beauty standards etc.

Barbadossunset · 18/09/2025 10:35

I’m sorry but they do not work. They make appearances every so often and then they go back to living in the lap of luxury. I have no sympathy for them and I am disgusted by the entire farce.

Dontreinmein plenty of room for a guillotine or two on the Buckingham Palace forecourt!

It will be interesting to see how things unfold and how history judges this embarrassing spectacle.
@BeHappySloth

How do you think history judges the state visits of Mugabe and Nicolae Ceausescu?
Or should only leaders who you approve of be asked on state visits?

This. Yes it was awful to behold, but a pragmatic, necessary evil.

Why do you say that?

Can't someone point something out on here without silly comments like yours?

And if you read my post I was beyond complimentary about what was the Princes Trust.

My goodness. Pointing out the Princes Trust is now called The Kings Trust is not an attack on you.
I was just idly saying that's what it's called now and what a wonderful initiative of Charles's it was set up 50 years ago
Why do you take umbrage at that?

Sometimes I feel some posters can't say anything without it being jumped on

It's funny but people seem to have no issue with commenting on Camilla, Charles or William.

Charles, William, and Camilla haven’t faced an 18-month bullying campaign like Catherine has, starting with the whole “Where’s Kate?” debacle. Kensington Palace had already made it clear she’d be out of action until Easter, yet people went hysterical. People were posting wild theories that she was dead, that she had left William, that he had beaten her, or that he was having an affair. Celebrities mocked her online, people went out to “find” her, sneaked photos of her off duty, and then poured over them, claiming it wasn’t her or using them to prove their conspiracy theories. It even leaked into traditional media, forcing her to reveal her diagnosis before she was ready, just to protect her children from the chaos.

Since the actual revelation, there’s been ghoulish speculation about her appearance (too thin, “haggard,” wearing a wig), comments that she looks ill or tired (well, duh, she’s recovering from cancer and chemo and she’s publicly acknowledged that some days are harder than others) claims that she’s more ill than she says, that her marriage is falling apart and that William is cheating on her. She’s even had people try to access her medical records for God knows what reason. People call her lazy, and that she’s “using cancer as an excuse.” I saw that exact comment on here recently and thankfully MN deleted it.

It’s quite obviously a calculated attack on Catherine by Sussex Squad and it’s very transparent when it’s happening.

So yes, that’s probably why people have issues when commenting on Catherine’s appearance.
