Trump State Visit

A space for thoughts.

My first is that being at Windsor might make it easier to host a foreign leader. Which then begs the question as to whether in the modern age we really need Buckingham Palace. None of the royals like living there and I bet you'd make a fortune hiring it out for events and tourists.

Whilst i find Catherine's coat dresses a little boring it makes sense to have a sort of uniform.

In my opinion, the Princess of Wales currently looks well, although thin. She has always been slim, even before surgery and cancer.

I think people forget that the discovery of cancer came when she was in hospital for planned surgery, after which she was expected to remain in hospital for 14 days. That is not minor surgery.

She had since needed to recover from that surgery, the underlying condition, the cancer and the treatment. Any weight gain (if needed, and that would be between her and her medical team) would come after that.

Why is Kate wearing such a frumpy dress/coat for the banquet?

I thought she looked beautiful and the dress was stunning - it actually resembled my wedding dress so that probably gave it an advantage!

MrsLeonFarrell · 18/09/2025 16:32

Catherine is slim not thin. I live with ectomorphs who are constantly asked about their weight and eating habits. I see what they eat, they eat far more than me and don't put on weight at all (it's really annoying). Some people are naturally very slim, but they stand out more than they used to because the average size is going up. If you look at Catherine she is fit and toned. That's impossible if you aren't eating well. I doubt she snacks a lot on chocolate and crisps like I do but she is healthy and the right size for her body type.

As someone whose silhouette closely resembles a mushroom I wish I were an ectomorph.

I know, right?

I’d love to see what all these people calling Catherine “haggard” actually look like, because she looked absolutely stunning last night.

You can dislike the dress, be tired of the same tiara, you can even say you dislike her; but calling her haggard? That’s just mean and flat-out untrue. The general consensus everywhere else is that she looked beautiful and well.

And even if someone genuinely thought otherwise, where’s the compassion? The basic understanding that she’s recovering from cancer, chemo, and the stress of being forced to reveal her diagnosis before she was ready? Of course she’s not always going to look like she in her 20s or 30s, or even pre cancer. It’s called ageing and she’s doing it gracefully.

These posters (so many new names, by the way) are being very transparent with their little campaign, and honestly, it’s laughable. 🤣 We see you!

Its awful. Some people are incredibly mean and rude. She looked stunning.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…

For a moment, I thought you were talking about Melania's state banquet garb.

She’s always been very very thin, at least in the past fifteen years. I think she looked amazing last night, but generally and even pre cancer diagnosis I think she looks tired and drawn . She knows how to put on a big smile and play the game, but she doesn’t look well to me generally.

sminted · 18/09/2025 17:38

Catherine is slim not thin.

What exactly do you think thin is? I'm 5ft 10, when I looked like that in photos I was underweight. But it's her body so she can look how she wants.

I don't understand why it's mean to not think she's stunning or if you disagree you must have a narrative. She's an attractive, well groomed woman.

sminted · 18/09/2025 17:41

And I was naturally lean with a small frame, ate whatever I wanted. But I couldn't be as thin as I was now post dc & in my early 40s without a shit ton of exercise and serious food restriction.

Thedom · 18/09/2025 17:50

Not everyone struggles with excess weight, even in their 40’s, some people are naturally slim with long lean athletic bodies, hard as that is to accept by some people.

No, she’s thin. She used to have a very athletic build but it’s clear she’s lost muscle.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 18/09/2025 14:13

Yes I’ve noticed a lot of posts like this, also Haggared, lined, old, exhausted etc. either the posters saying these things have never actually seen a person who “looks very sick” or they are pushing a narrative to undermine her, reminds me of that scene in Dr. Who where these tactics were deployed.

I was very ill recently and when my BFF of 30+ years came to the hospital, she initally didn't recognise me and cried when she did.

Catherine looks well IMO and I would like to look as "haggard" and "exhausted" as she does. She looked fabulous at the banquet, shades of gold really suit her.

I am naturally slim like one of my parents. I'm a just a normal BMI now. I can no longer be an underweight BMI naturally but I'm fine with that.

sminted · 18/09/2025 18:05

Illness does funny things to you. My brother was very ill & lost 2.5 stone the month he was in hospital. It was all muscle though & he literally shrunk if that makes sense. It was such a shock to see him (during covid so restricted visits) as I'm used to him being so tall & strong.

Ihateboris · 18/09/2025 18:36

Sorry but she looks thin, not athletic. She has zero muscle definition. See attached photo ....the last one was taken at Wimbledon this year.

Quite. If it was any of my business, I'd say she had an eating disorder. But it isn't, so I won't.

NewAgeNewMe · 18/09/2025 18:53

She went into hospital for a planned operation where cancer was subsequently found.

She obviously has underlying health issues, could be colitis or crohns maybe.

Alternatively, and more likely, similar to my very fit 63 year old friend, who stuffs her face but runs or trains every day, just incredibly fit.

I don't think I've ever seen Melania look so happy and relaxed. She often seems a bit spaced out in public.

Whatever you think about the royals, or about Trump, or even if you think the visit should have happened at all, I think it's undeniable that this State Visit has been a triumph for all concerned.

It struck me how happy Melania looked today. Both women did. Both of them also looked lovely.

DontReinMeIn · 18/09/2025 15:03

Okay, younger royal women. It’s very concerning.

Can you name them pls. I’m having trouble thinking of who you might mean.

Came on here (my first time on TRF) to say the same. In the photos where she's talking to Kate she looks genuinely happy and relaxed, something I'm not sure I've ever seen before.

Weepixie · 18/09/2025 19:16

Limehawkmoth · 18/09/2025 16:06

I couldn’t be less interested in fashion, or how celebs, including princesses appear. nor am I a royalist or anti-monarchist. And I’m way too old to be fixated on going on of next generation of royals.

but I am genuinely shocked at size of Kate’s waist in that gold dress, when I saw news. She definately appeared to me to be significantly thinner than her already slim build has ever been, even though she’d clearly lost weight from her illness .

It’s genuinely concerning to see someone still loosing weight, after chemo has finished, and if that means she is struggling to get back to her normal eating regime because her health is still not great.

to take your point about people not knowing what I’ll looks like, My dad died of LBD. Pretty much stopped eating for last 5 months of life (those that have elderly bed ridden relatives know it is astonishing how long people can live on virtually no calories, and how nursing homes try to get high calories food into them on rare days they do want to eat. ). Dad lost weight. Was very frail. But he was dying. His body was shutting down and he needed less and less calories,

And that’s the point; someone who is now on “other” side of difficult treatment, and recovering shouldn’t be loosing more weight, surely?

To say people are pushing an undermining narrative is pants. I think others like me are genuinely shocked to see anyone looking that thin, aside from skeletal models who live of fags and cocaine for a price and fame.

but granted, it’s not anyone’s business but hers, and her medical team. And I assume they must be all feel fine with it, so fair do.

The POW had a health condition that meant she needed huge surgery to try and fix a problem. Remember, she was expected to spend 2 weeks in hospital. I suspect that whatever the original problem with her health was, she still has it to a certain extent to this day. I suspect it involves how she absorbs her food.

The cancer being found was a shock to everyone around her including her Drs. She did not have surgery because she had cancer. Her cancer was caught very early, I suspect she’s well and truly seen the back of it and I really do wish people would just shut the duck up with their faux concerns about her health. They fool no one, and it almost sounds as if they’re wishing the bloody cancer to come back so they can say - I knew she was ill, I knew it was back, I even said it (without saying it because I’m a coward) on MN when she was on a day out with Melania.

Away and speak about your own family members who’ve had cancer the way you speak about the POW, you bunch of bloody vultures.

She was also happy and smiling in her photos with her solo engagement with Camilla - it's like looking at a different person. She NEVER looks like that when she's standing next to or near Trump.

Please could I add that all three of them did? I’m not sure who dresses the Queen but they’re spot on. The Princess of Wales and Melania Trump are undoubtedly beautiful women. The Queen is perhaps not a classic beauty but from the little I know about her I suspect she’s a great character and would be a great friend. She is certainly equal to the younger women stylistically.

(I say that as a natural Republican 😁)

Why does Melanie stay with Trump?

I’ve wondered that for years. I suppose that after all this time and a shared, loved child, it’s possible that she does actually love him. Stranger things have happened.

Has anyone else noticed how he has recently referred to his “wonderful First Lady” more and more in public? Perhaps as an anecdotally increasingly frail man, he is finally recognising that he very much needs her? In previous decades, it was likely that he’d have traded her in for a younger model. Who on earth is going to take him on now?

I see her as a modern day Katherine Parr.
