The royal family

What will happen to Princess Charlotte’s future family?

The thread about Peter Philips’ second engagement has got me thinking and now I have a question for you royal experts.

Now that the latest Letter Patent has placed Princess Charlotte ahead of Prince Louis in the LoS, what will happen when Princess Charlotte marries? Being a female and additionally not the immediate heir, there is a statistical likelihood she will be the first of the Wales children to marry. Will her husband likely receive a title and thus will their children receive titles? According to tradition this shouldn’t happen and Princess Charlotte’s future husband and children, as was in the case of Princess Anne, should be title-less because usually the husband of a female Royal doesn’t automatically receive a title.

Princess Anne was always ranked behind her three brothers on the LoS but this time around things are different and Princess Charlotte and any future children will rank higher than Prince Louis and his future children. It is expected that Prince Louis’ wife would receive a Duchess title and their children Prince and Princess titles (assuming, sadly, that by the time any of the Wales’ children are ready for marriage it is quite likely their father would be King).

So will there be any change for Princess Charlotte’s husband? Their first child is likely to be 3rd in line to the throne. And to have a 3rd in line without a title, would that be awkward?

There isn’t a ‘they’ deciding how the Louis’ children are styled. It will be down to Louis while his children are minors and to them when they are adults because according to the current letters patent, that’s their right. James could decide when he’s an adult he’d rather be Prince James and no-one could stop him. I rather get the impression the royal family would rather that Archie and Lily weren’t Prince and Princess but since they are entitled to the titles, their parents have decided to use them.

I just don’t think gender equality is acknowledging the inequality between Louis and Charlotte and saying it’s ok because the plan is for people who have no way of agreeing to anything now to deal with it among themselves

I'm not talking about what the most equal thing is or the thing that I would like to see happen. I'm talking about what I think is the likely outcome.

So far discussions have happened and a suitable agreement regarding titles has been reached for Peter, Zara, Louise and James. Harry refusing to do as he's told may mean that the rules are changed, but perhaps it depends how that pans out.

I'd be entirely happy for all grandchildren of the monarch to not have automatic titles unless in the direct line.

I'd also support a part time working royal solution to enable flexibility to deal with the situation where the full time working royals become too infirm to manage full duties but the new generation are too young. Allowing the likes of Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise, and James to undertake some official duties without being tied in for life could avoid a future situation like the Gloucesters and Kents.

Who knows what will happen? The royal kids might turn out to be (or already be) complete and utter pricks! We only get a very edited view of them. Andrew was presented as a Falklands hero until we discovered the truth because of the Epstein fall out. The whole Diana stuff is being quietly pushed under a carpet so Charles appears to be a better king and man. Maybe by the time she is of an age, the royal family will be more like European royals and she'll have to get a job and do work/life balance 😁

I'm more interested to know what happens if George falls in love with one of the current crop of European princesses who will one day be a Queen...
Interesting. I suspect it will not be allowed unless one of them gives up their right to the Throne. IIRC Philip had to give up all his claims to various thrones to marry TLQ

It's highly unlikely to be an issue; for one thing, all of these future queens are quite a bit older than George, except Estelle. But if it did, one would likely have to renounce.

The point about Harry doing as he is told is a good one, assuming that the King's preference is for Archie and Lilibet not to use royal titles. This brings to mind the situation of Louise and James. Poster have said that it is their choice whether to use HRH, etc. Technically, it is, but they are highly unlikely to go against the King's wishes in the matter, which I am sure is for them to be Lord/Lady.

In reality the Wessex decision only really impacts Louise as James is now Earl of Wessex, and was Viscount Severn until his dad became DofE so he'd rarely have been referred to as simply Prince James anyways.

Going forward if they issue the Dukedoms/Earldoms for life and title all the children Lord and Lady it would be more even.

Or at least issue any Dukedoms/Earldoms as being passed onto the eldest child, like the Mountbatten one and Fife one have been in the past so they can pass to a female like.

Blimey very heteronormative. You’ve assumed all three will be straight.

Have you read the whole thread? There are several discussions about what might happen if any of them have same sex partners.

There have been many gay Royals. They have all married and had children. I suspect it won't matter whether they are gay or straight. They will still Marry and have children ( if they can)

Indeed.

And if this was the Middle Ages, Charlotte would probably be married off to James and George or Louis to Lili!
