I had a friend who worked in Fleet Street years ago, and he often had information that never saw the light of day for various (possibly litigious) reasons. He always maintained (and I completely believe it) that the cash for access scandal, that Fergie took the rap for, was a joint enterprise between the two of them. The quid pro quo was that Fergie was well looked after on the quiet. That archive article above would seem to say as much, reading between the lines. All very grubby.

Yes, I think he was completely involved. I can't see Fergie offering access to Andrew for cash if she didn't already know he would agree. It must have been a money-making venture they came up with together.

Valentine Low's book, Courtiers, has a lot of stories about Andrew, including that some diplomats referred to him as HBH - His Buffoon Highness - because he was so rude, unprepared and arrogant.

I know. She was declaring that she was penniless for a while and then all of a sudden she was fine...

PA even made it into Wikileaks, where a US ambassador (can't remember what country now, maybe Kazakstan) had declared in an email that he was rude, boorish and clueless, at an official dinner event when he was Trade Envoy.

He must have been raking in personal financial favours when he was doing that job.

Lownie told The Daily Beast he stood by the story, saying he had rechecked and reconfirmed it with his source.

“I stand by my source, who has proved reliable and was close to Andrew. They had no reason to make this up and gave me lots of detail,” Lownie said. “On the other hand, it is understandable that Prince Harry’s spokesman should seek to deny the story which has shades of the altercation he had with his brother. I’m afraid there is a long history of the Duke of Sussex being economical with the truth.”

Since when have William and Catherine ever given a sit-down interview? They still haven’t done one to this day. So the idea that the palace is “threatening” or “blocking” interviews with them doesn’t even make sense — there aren’t any to block in the first place.

Mrs Leon - it’s a horrible slander on Mr Toad! He was just selfish, entitled and irresponsible. PA sounds sub-human.

I can’t think of a character in mainstream literature who’s as repulsive as PA from this account. I hope he reads it and has to face his daughters. Men like Andrew have a mindset which puts their own female relatives (particularly daughters) into a separate category from the women the exploit.

On the other hand I feel for Beatrice and Eugenie. They’ll say they don’t believe it (publicly) because what else can they do, whatever their private thoughts?
