The royal family

Do you think some of you are addicted to hating Harry and Meghan?

More and more these manic threads are popping up on mumsnet, wild posts and theories and then hundreds of posts brimming with excitement about catching them out or exposing them. It’s like a game or a hunt. Have many of you crossed the line from interested to addicted?

This is my position too, with the addition that I am also fascinated by the Shakespean tragedy elements - flawed hero and heroine (lack of self knowledge, distorted view of their own importance); individual character traits which combine to propel the action forward (belief they are always right, constant court cases; creation of family feuds); two innocents caught in the crossfire (Archie and Lili); other, worthier royals in supporting roles to provide a mirror for the hero and heroine (William and Kate); jesters with bit parts (James Cordon and Prince Louis); a chorus providing commentary (the media, YouTubers and influencers); splendid jewels and costumes; the overarching theme of exiles banished from a golden kingdom; lavish sets (ancient palaces and a Californian millionaire/billionaire enclave); the dwindling fortunes of the hero and heroine.

Love this summary!

Umm I don’t think so

Feel free to search if you so choose. Pretty sure I haven’t, but who knows!

BreadInCaptivity · 11/05/2025 14:52

I post on quite a few H&M threads.

The caveat is that it’s in response to something new they have done. I don’t spend time day to day giving them any headspace at all and go months without posting anything about them.

I also don’t hate them. Why would I? I don’t know them.

I am however often baffled and irritated by their behaviours. Why?

Due to who H is the pair of them have both benefited greatly from the UK taxpayer and from being part of the RF.

Yet they treat the very institutions, country and public goodwill that has given them a platform to build a lavish US lifestyle and monetise that with utter distain.

H’s recent interview totally misrepresented the UK, his fathers position and his security arrangements on a global stage.

That’s newsworthy and a interesting point of discussion.

More widely, I wonder how long they can both (without any shame) possibly retain their titles in the context of all they have done to undermine the integrity of a country and institution that provides them.

In short, my interest is not actually about them personally but in how their actions have political and judicial implications and how the RF and UK Govt/Courts respond.

If you’re missing the positive ones maybe you’re not as attracted to them as the negative, as they are there.

It wouldn't surprise me if As Ever has already been consigned to history.

Just checked. All sold out-more jam coming soon.Apparently. You can only get info about restocks if you hand over your email address-which I’m not doing. So yes-sounds like it’s history.

Yep-possibly. But that does suggest there aren’t many of them.

If it was viable business, the website would emblazon 'back in stock on X date'.

I think having strong opinions on H and M is the hallmark of an absolute saddo.

Should also add I’ve learned a lot from these threads about letters patent, line of succession, councillors of state, RAVEC and how the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster work.

Thats just generally interesting to me.

Not at all, me & my aunt has a great discussion about them over a cuppa the other day. When I was a kid, my mother & me, would devour Hello! especially if Princess Diana featured.

Love the Shakespearian Tragedy aspect… If only they’d seen COVID, the Queen’s death, the two kids, King Charles cancer, Kate’s cancer coming. They could have been the heroes!

Portakalkedi · 11/05/2025 15:14

For the 27 billionth time, nobody 'hates' this pair. People might mock them, laugh at their bonkers self-obsession, marvel at their barefaced lies, etc etc but it's not 'hate'.

Ketzele · 11/05/2025 13:03

I agree. Actually caring about them one way or the other would be odd and would destroy the comedy value. It would be like caring about Mr Bean or Hyacinth Bucket.

Buyingahaus · 11/05/2025 15:18

OP, yes I agree. I can’t avoid the headlines but I don’t bother with looking at the content on Meghan and Harry. I looked at a thread recently about advice they should be given and the first few replies was about they should “shut up, shut up, shut up” - you get them to shut up by stopping giving them any head space or reading the click bait that pays the media to give them attention. People who hate on them are just feeding the frenzy. I still don’t know what Harry said in his latest interview and I think my life is better for it! They really aren’t worth the energy to gossip about and hate. 🤷‍♀️

CurlewKate · 11/05/2025 12:52

Has there ever been a pro H&M thread on Mumsnet?

Yes ages ago certain folk started threads where only nice comments were allowed. Usually ended up in a row. These days they invite so much criticism there is hardly anything positive to say about them. Why can't they just live quiet lives without all these court cases, jam making and podcasts.

LipglossAlly · 11/05/2025 15:18

The answer is yes.
No matter what they tell themselves to justify it, it seems to have become an obsession and it is really concerning and bizarre to watch 🤢

You wouldn’t have thought so given the responses on other threads.

I have a close friend who’s said passionately how much she hates Meghan. She’s otherwise the kindest, most generous friend and it really pained me to hear that from
her. She adores Kate.

Erm…you messaged on Meg’s Era of Joy thread which started out as a positive thread. The positive threads are there (like the ones i posted upthread), you’re just choosing to ignore them and jump in on the negative ones.

Looking back through your posts (which you invited us to do) you have also posted some pretty nasty and dismissive posts about Catherine and William in early 2024 with the whole ‘where’s Kate’ debacle, including criticising William for not attending his Godfather’s funeral (which we later found out was because he found out his wife had cancer) and hoping that William and Catherine were separating. When someone asked you to stop speculating you also replied back “why”.

Pot calling the kettle black?

I wouldn’t bother @CoffeeCantata!
these threads don’t get started for meaningful discussions, they are to attempt to shut down criticism with shaming and insults!
and they all start with “ I’m not really a fan of h and m but”

I agree, Jeff. But it's the old p*** chess again! Futile but strangely irresistible, I find!

Really you discuss this with friends!
I don’t talk about h and m with family or friends why would I!

I don’t discuss it with friends and I didn’t bring it up! She said how much she loves Kate and hates Meghan! 🤷‍♀️ I have no opinion apart from the fact that I think people care too much, but I didn’t want to upset her so I just listened!

I haven't seen anything approaching hatred of the sort you describe on here. Though I'm very critical and sceptical about H & M (and yes, I do get a lot of amusement out of following them - they are massively entertaining), my experience on MN is that the really appalling venom and spite was (and just occasionally still is) directed at William and Catherine. I think this is because - sorry, but I have to be honest or this thread is pointless - H & M critics do tend to be well-educated, articulate, fair, well-informed and

I don't know if you look at Celebitchy? If not, I'm not recommending it. It's like an open sewer of hatred, malice, prejudice and frankly, evil. Those people are unhinged - a corny word, but it's the only one that fits in that context. Now, when I've looked at Celebitchy, just to see what the Squad are up to, I feel I need a shower - it's so disgusting.

Nothing said on MN comes near to that level of obsession!

When people like M & H have done the things they've done (especially in harming others) and continue to parade themselves as virtuous people and to preach at everyone, it's not surprising some of us will have an opinion, and want to comment!

CoffeeCantata · 11/05/2025 15:42

...moderate is the word missing at the end of para 1. Sorry - got interrupted!
