Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral.
I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going to head of the Church of England.

I know the invite said dark suits for men, but everyone else - except Trump of course! - knew that black was expected, and it's not as if he doesn't have a black suit.

I think someone is upset that their favourite didn’t get an invite to such an important, prestigious and historic event. They’re not deemed important enough 🤭

Well it was for world leaders, not pen pushing management mediocrity ;)

Reetpetitenot · 26/04/2025 20:53

William was totally appropriately dressed. You'll have to go and scrabble around desperately for something else to have a pop at him about.

AcquadiP · 26/04/2025 20:54

I disagree, Williams navy suit with a black tie was respectful (and smart.)

The C of E was formed in the 16th century when Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic church and it doesn't recognise the Pope as the supreme leader. On that basis it was respectful of William to attend (on behalf of the King.)

Nopersbro · 26/04/2025 21:03

William followed the dress code that was formally communicated by the Vatican: dark suit, black tie. If you want to get technical, Trump did violate it (dark suit, dark blue tie) and so did Zelensky (black suit, no tie).

As a side note (probably irrelevant to William's intentions) - in Argentina, where the Pope was from, black is the formal colour of mourning and is directly associated with the bereaved. Traditionally, it was worn for a set time after the death of the family member (or permanently, for widows). Someone who attended a funeral but was not a family member (or to modernise the tradition, a close friend or associate) might be more proper to wear dark navy or another dark neutral so as to highlight rather than appropriate the grief of the bereaved. Thus, there's logic to a non-Catholic wearing navy to this Vatican funeral (although of course black would also be acceptable).

Endofyear · 26/04/2025 21:31

I really don't think the pope would care!

It seems that having a pop at William for not respecting church/ faith/ Christianity is the latest thing. Lord knows why.
In the last week he's been slated on here for not believing in God (according to 'sources'): not supporting his sick father at the Easter service; being too lazy to go to church at all on Easter Sunday; in fact, going to church on Easter Sunday but in Norfolk not Windsor; not greeting folk waiting for him to come out of the church he wasn't going to until he did....now he's wearing a disrespectfully dark blue suit. It's all very tedious.

Makes a change from a the numerous multiple threads having a pop stand the other pair. Kind of balances it out a bit

JeremiahBullfrog · 26/04/2025 22:26

All the cardinals were in bright red, disrespectful idiots!

Not really though, as everything William's been criticised for, he hasn't actually done. He's behaved appropriately in every scenario mentioned above. Unlike some.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 26/04/2025 22:33

Wow even his poll bearers and the cardinals didn’t wear black 😮 I am shooketh 😦🤣🤭

Upper clas Englishmen usually don’t own a black lounge suit. They wear a dark grey or very dark blue suit to funerals. Plus the black tie. They likely will only have a black morning coat and a dinner suit as the black formalwear in their entire wardrobe. It is a class marker and it is also entirely correct and appropriate.

The Vatican did not specify a black suit, they specified a dark one.

Serenster · 26/04/2025 22:41

You can see King Abdullah of Jordan diagonally in front of William in the picture posted upthread, also wearing a dark navy suit. And others, in line with the dress code. Manufactured outrage.

He worn navy to the queen’s funeral too (because he was in uniform). Charles worn a very dark blue suit to the funeral of Pope John Paul II

Did he because it looks black.

YABU. Navy looks better with Prince William's colouring.

MeganM3 · 26/04/2025 22:53

Dark blue is completely appropriate. Why would you think otherwise?
He looked very smart.

Anyway, the vast majority of this country wouldn’t have cared whether he even attended the funeral
of the pope or not, let alone the colour of his very respectable suit.

He's too lazy to even instruct his valet to choose a black suit for him. Probably sulking because he couldn't go to the Villa game.

Given the pummeling they received, he may have been mightily relieved!

Topseyt123 · 26/04/2025 23:00

What a totally ridiculous thing to get het up over.

There were plenty of people there in dark blue suits. Perfectly respectful and fine. Don't talk bollocks.

DH wore a blue suit to my Dad's funeral. Should I have flung him out of the crematorium?

mikado1 · 26/04/2025 23:04

I wore navy to my parents' Catholic funerals. I don't own black or suit it. I remember one of my cousins wearing a beautiful red coat to my aunt's funeral and my Mum was admiring it so I've no doubt she wouldn't have cared a bit that I wasn't in black.

He's probably glad he missed it.

I know. Utterly ridiculous. It's just picking at him and is a bit pathetic.

This. A world of difference. Why make stuff up to have a go at someone?

Itsanewnameeveryday · 26/04/2025 23:14

I assume that William has followed the King in choosing suits from Saville Row.
Mostly they think that black suits are a very poor choice for a gentleman so he may not even own one.

Conniebygaslight · 26/04/2025 23:22

Disgraceful! Kate should LTB immediately.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 26/04/2025 20:09

Navy has been seen as an appropriate colour for suits worn at funerals for decades. What’s not acceptable is the lighter blue, reminiscent of a car salesman, worn by Donald Trump. But we know he has no class or style. Or brain 😂

Well Trump is, quite literally, a car salesman

minnienono · 26/04/2025 23:27

I host funerals, black is no longer the norm in the U.K., even suits are no longer that common beyond next of kin. Before anyone says it’s a Catholic funeral, we sometimes host Catholic funerals too, certainly not all in black either, navy is common

President Zelensky was in black, but he wasn’t wearing a suit and tie. Do you have a problem with that too?

No issue with Zelensky as he wore black, and he wears military style clothes as his country is at war. If he was wearing khaki, as he usually does, that would have been disrespectful.
