Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral.
I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going to head of the Church of England.

I know the invite said dark suits for men, but everyone else - except Trump of course! - knew that black was expected, and it's not as if he doesn't have a black suit.

OP you seem to be saying you know better than the Vatican staff who wrote the bloody dress code.

Personally I think the catholic church is one of the most corrupt organisations in existence & wouldn't care if people turned up dressed for Mardi Gras but the fact is wearing navy IS IN LINE WITH THE DRESS CODE issued by your holy masters.

Now you may take offence.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/04/2025 03:33

Black is meant for those particularly close to the deceased; it has just become the norm, though.

I found the people taking photos of the coffin more disrespectful to be honest. It’s a funeral, not a photo op.

Dark suit and black tie was the specification, so he’s done nothing wrong. People are mad at Trump coz he wore a bright blue suit and blue tie. Biden also wore a blue suit and blue tie, just a shade darker. Zelensky wore black but didn’t wear a suit.

Women were also required to wear a black dress or suit with a head covering, yet Brigitte Macron and Giorgia Meloni opted not to cover her head 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am rudely interrupting a thread about a very solemn subject, with something that I thought was inappropriate but amusing. I was at Westminster Cathedral for the Good Friday afternoon service which is very long and can be tiring. So most people who are attending it are Catholics who are actually here for the service. Many are tourists because the Cathedral is easy to find and sure to have a service at 3.00pm, so makes attendance a sure thing.

Cardinal Basil Hume conducted the service and his name was being bruited about as a potential future Pope, and I gather he was quite popular in the UK (I'm not British, so in reality he might actually have been loathed, for all I know), Anyway it came to the part of the service where Cardinal H had to drag an almost life size cross down the aisle. A German tourist couldn't resist the opportunity, was overcome with excitement and leapt into the aisle in front of the Cardinal and look a flash picture of him. I know he was a German because it was decades ago and it was pre-mobile days and many people had enormous film cameras with giant flashes that could have lit up the darkened Cathedral (okay, a bit of an exaggeration) and shoulder straps with their national flag on it.

Surprisingly, no one overreacted and the German gentleman just returned to his pew.

Filing this under W for “Who cares?”.

The dress code said dark suits, but convention and protocol is for black suits. All the other men in suits - with the exemption of Trump, the King of Jordan and Trump (according to the New York Times) - wore black. Saying 'But the dress code said dark suits' isn't a gotcha, William got it wrong

UK Catholics do have a right to feel let down, even though PPs are telling me that I'm being ridiculous, and some are still cracking jokes about it.

I'm technically a UK Catholic (from NI).
Over here it's kinda 'anything sensible goes' at funerals. I wore black to my dad's funeral but rarely do for others. As long as you look smart nobody bats an eyelid.

I recently went to the funeral of my uncle (by marriage) in England. Also Catholic. I did wear black as I thought this was probably the done thing in England, but most of his immediate family were in navy.

StevesLavaChicken · 27/04/2025 03:22

He’s not Catholic. Why would he wear black? Church of England is not Catholic.

You don’t have to be catholic to wear black 🫤

RhododendronFlowers · 27/04/2025 06:16

Just find something else, OP. William looked perfectly smart and appropriate. Dark suit, white shirt, dark tie, polished black shoes. Nothing crumpled, he didn't make the occasion all about him, he didn't take a selfie it was all fine.

doodleschnoodle · 27/04/2025 06:40

Outrage as man follows dress code. More at 11.

SparklyGlitterballs · 27/04/2025 07:03

There were a lot of VIPs who didn't follow the dress code, particularly women with no veil or head covering (looking at you Bridgette Macron). There was a woman in the third row with a navy top with white polka dots FFS!

This is what I found truly shameful. World leaders/VIPs doing this...

This was the very formal funeral of the Pope, everyone else understood to wear black. As PPs have said, black is expected at a formal Catholic funeral. I wore black to my grandparents and parents funerals.

I'm Catholic, like millions of people living in the UK, and Prince William was representing the people of the UK. Catholics get to feel let down by his failure to wear black.

The 'get over yourself' and smirking emojis are so inappropriate.

I think you are more let down by all the child abuse carried out by priests to be honest but if it's suit wearing that you prefer to focus on that's interesting.

You need to blame (suit not abuse) whoever issued the dress code for the funeral as they said dark suits and a tie for men, so sticking to the facts, William followed the dress code, Zelensky did not as he did not wear a tie.

Piglet89 · 27/04/2025 07:41

Yeah, because Francis himself would have been tying himself up in knots about a dress code. 🤣

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 27/04/2025 08:12

Rabble rabble rabble!

I don’t think the Swiss guard got your memo either, he sticks out like a sore thumb 🤭

RhododendronFlowers · 27/04/2025 08:15

Now that's just showing off. Whereas it looks to me as if William is fitting right in.
Maybe William could write a book, do interviews and make a Netflix series about how unfairly he's being treated.

Mountainfrog · 27/04/2025 08:18

There probably is subtle convention for this. Particularly if leaders/representatives of other countries where Catholicism is not the main/state religion such as India/Middle Eastern countries also didn’t wear black. I suspect it is showing respect by following the dress code, but leaving black for those more close to the RCC. Also leaving scope for some personal choice, assuming it meant a lot to Melania going for very traditional dress, but perhaps brigitte macron did not want to seem hypocritical if she’s not a believer herself?

Everyone else did not wear black suits. Look at the crowd.

yes
odd to pick on POW. he looked fine.

Calliopespa · 27/04/2025 08:20

I think everyone had made an effort.

Maybe the just want to pick on him.

Serenster · 27/04/2025 08:25

Anyway, good to have confirmation that all the Royals get picked on for allegedly not following largely made up protocols.

The late Pope is (or was) also the head of state of Vatican City, which is an independent state. I think even on that basis he should have opted for black.

And the Vatican stated dark suits NOT black. Why do some people think their opinion counts above that of the actual State itself. The late Pope would have found the nitpicking ridiculous.

smilesy · 27/04/2025 08:42

I am amused by the number of posters quoting my (much) earlier post about Zelensky and saying “but but, his country is a war”. I am well aware of that. I was just pointing out the fact that he has broken the dress code, whereas William, in wearing a dark suit as requested, and a black tie, has not. I actually don’t care that Zelensky wasn’t wearing a suit. I was using him to point out the fact that this outrage against William, who was following the dress code, is completely manufactured.

As pp have said, it is obvious that this thread has been created simply to rain false light on the Prince of Wales, and ignore the fact that he did indeed follow the dress code. I am no fan of the member of the RF who I suspect many posters are fans of, but I would defend to the ends of the Earth his right to wear a dark navy suit and black tie to the funeral of the pope, as it was part of the actual dress code. Not some fantastical interpretation of it. I’m not sure why facts became optional but it is a sad thing

DrummingMousWife · 27/04/2025 08:43

Lindy2 · 26/04/2025 20:03

It was very dark navy with a black tie. It was exactly in line with the requested dress code. I think you're making a problem out of nothing.

This.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 27/04/2025 09:44

Met protocol requirements. Suit was well-pressed. Didn't make it all about him. Others would do well to take note.

MrsFinkelstein · 27/04/2025 10:04

Fredshred · 27/04/2025 00:32

I quite agree. Unless we’re colour blind and he’s really standing out in his tropical colours…

You are colour blind, and I personally did feel the Hawaiian shirt was a teeny bit OTT.

IndigoViolent · 27/04/2025 10:15

Mookie81 · 27/04/2025 01:08

He didn't even wear a tie, he was the most disrespectfully dressed person there. Im fed up of his 'I don't need to dress in a suit' shtick he does all the time.

FFS, what difference does it make if he wears a tie? The Pope will still be dead!
