Would anyone like to join me in my attempt to unite the board and discuss our favourite royal outfits (before it enviably turns into another bun fight 🤣)

I’ll start with my favourite Catherine outfits first…

I hated the green cape dress of Meghan's but I really liked her wedding dress and eve of wedding dress. I loved the simplicity of her wedding dress, plain and simple lovely neckline

I wasn't a fan of Beatrice's remodelled wedding dress at all. It just looked dated and it was a bit short? It did her no favours

Looking back it was a joke of a wedding. Royal family also in retrospect looked like they didn’t want to be there. Some really let themselves down with their behaviour too. Camilla caught laughing and Beatrice side eying someone…her sister maybe over the American preacher. Who was absolutely gorgeous but context in terms of this being England. Also celebrates unknown in family area. Just bizarre. Harrys own friends not invited.

Th American preacher was a bit ridiculous at times. He admitted to ad libbing some parts. He was very passionate but he over ran his slot as he went off tangent. He was too jazzy for our dour Church of England service 🤣

What’s an SPD issue @AuroraCake?

Sensory processing. Issues with clothing would be huge. Don’t like tight fitting clothes because don’t like feel or material also irritates them. That dress was silk I believe. Sensory nightmare. What she choices to wear and the materials she wears also shouts this to me. If you know, you know, I guess.

I liked the long red cape dress and the black ones she wore for the late Queen's funeral. I thought the green one looked like the cape had slipped sideways and was strangling her. It also didn't fit very well.

Those were the only 2 cape dresses that worked and looked good. The others swamped her. The green Commonwealth one was a disaster.

I always thought she looked much better in well tailored, simple shift dresses, but she has to watch the sleeves. Meghan has very wide shoulders compared to her hips, so the sleeves have to sit perfectly otherwise she can look way too wide across the shoulders (hence why I don't really like her in halternecks) and she needs to watch where her waist line sits. The best halterneck she wore was the navy one in ?Columbia because it had a slight peplum so it evened out her shoulders with her hips. I preferred her evening wedding dress to her Church dress, but again both needed to be better tailored IMO. To me it looked like she lost more weight than expected before the wedding, because they both just needed a teeny bit more tweaking (especially the Church dress).

IMO Meghan had way more hits than misses when in the RF, now it's definitely the opposite. And I think it's because she's decided to go for the Old Money Quiet Luxury style and it doesn't suit her body type. I really wish she'd find a stylist who knows what they're doing and could find her look - because she'd be stunning.

Honestly I have no idea what was going on with the bridal party dresses, they were all ill fitting and a general mess. I can’t imagine an iconic fashion house like Givenchy are at fault. Either whoever did the fittings really messed up or the design was changed last minute and there wasn’t enough time to implement.

I cannot even imagine what state they were in before Ajay Mirpuri worked on them considering the mess of them at the actual wedding. She should have had them remade. I hope she got her money back if she wasn’t the one at fault!

As her sister in law said. Or gone to an off the peg company who specialise and bought some in appropriate sizes. Seriously up close that dress had threads hanging. Seems looking rough. Boys Were fine. They must have been a disaster before they were altered. Also made of silk apparently so deadly hard to alter. I mean they were kids. What’s wrong with a cotton dress. Much easier to alter. I just don’t know. What those kids weren’t measured and what on earth went on. Givenchy also don’t make kids clothes. Whole wedding. Flowers and music was good.

sofasoda · 26/04/2025 10:12

Her shoulders are wider than her hips but they aren't very wide! she has a nice shoulder and neckline hence why I think she looks so good in halters.

Clearly this thread is going to go a certain way now rather than appreciating the fashion, shame.

Styles suit certain styles. She’s an inverted triangle shape. I am myself. But short so my shoulders look like a swimmers in certain styles. Always wear a sleeve. The boat neck of the wedding dress was perfect for this though.

Profhilodisaster · 26/04/2025 10:17

It's interesting about body proportion, I ve never really thought about it before but it really does make a difference when you see it. I'm trying to work out what I am 🙂

I also have a long torso and shorter legs. Kate does too. You have to account for that when buying tops and jumpers. A lot of my t shirts and jumpers are fatface because they just do an extra lenght which is great to stop rising up and tucking in with out peaking out because the body is long. Also certain style of dresses just don’t suit. Dropped waist. Bit busted too so no empire lines. A size up in dresses and shirts with buttons down the top to prevent gapping. But as these sizes then look the Meghan version of clothes on me mixed with close fitting skirts or trousers or belts in dresses case. I generally always look bigger on top. No baggy trousers and only culottes under proviso of high waisted and tucked in neat lined tops. Meghan shouldn’t wear baggy trousers, makes her look like a square.

And I was talking about me. Same shoulder issue but no halters for me as short and limbs are short. She looks fine in them.

I'm confused now as I thought you were talking about M here and I was disagreeing with you and saying she looks good in them.

😆

Most of the "how does someone always look so good threads" are because the people they talk about have very good proportions or know their proportions and dress well for them. You can be overweight, slim, tall, short but if you are well proportioned you will look better than most. Most people don't have excellent proportions.

If we're talking about fashion and style then obviously the discussion will talk about what does or doesn't suit some people - due to body shape/colouring etc.

And it's all subjective.

Meghan's body type is being discussed in exactly the same way Catherine's is.

She's a a beautiful woman with a lovely figure, but IMO she now rarely dresses well, I wish she would because she would look amazing

That gold dress in the picture is a classic example. Bad neckline and waist for her figure, material is awful and the length doesn't suit her. Fit again not ideal. Colour is good. IMO. Others may disagree, and that's fine.

I didn’t say that. And halternecks are one of the ones recommended for interverted triangles. I said for me, as an inverted triangle, absolutely not. As I look athletic with it. She doesn’t. I’m not that athletic in reality.

If there's one thing Camilla suits it's a hat !

She does head wear brilliantly, not just fabulous hats but she rocks a tiara too.

Exactly. Kate too has wide shoulders. But always dresses appropriately for it. She has a long torso. Meghan short. This affects fashion and choices that should be made.

you know this things really should be to people and they can work it out early. I went a whole teenage years having even my friends say: where is the rest of your top? They weren’t purposely cropped. Just t shirts.

Serenster · 26/04/2025 11:16

Princess Charlene of Monaco is another example of someone who sometimes gets dressing her figure very right, and sometimes very wrong. She was a South African competitive swimmer, and an Olympian, before she met Albert. Good swimmers obviously tend to come from those in the population who have broad shoulders and long limbs. So she has (fabulous) athletic and wide shoulders that are challenging to dress. Asymmetric and off the shoulder looks that don’t emphasise her shoulder width look really good on her. Outfits that hang directly from her shoulders aren’t so flattering.

Favourite royal wedding outfits

  1. Catherine’s Westminster dress
  2. Meghan’s evening dress
  3. Beatrice’s church dress
  4. Camilla’s coat
  5. Eugenie’s St George’s Chapel dress

I didn’t like Meghan’s church dress. It was poor fitting around the torso and the material was too stiff and rigid. I think she struggled with making a dress that honoured royal/church protocol whilst maintaining her own style, which is why the evening dress was so much better. She had more freedom to choose what she knew suited her.

I thought Meghan's dress was a bit naff, same goes for Sophie's. Neither dresses were ugly but with their resources / money I thought they could do more. I think Sophie wanted to avoid the Diana comparisons though. Having said that I thought Sophie had the most beautifal bouquet of flowers.

Edited

I think the problem is when you follow those "fashion tips" without thinking of YOU. It's a generalisation to say halternecks are recommended for inverted triangles, because it often does, but not always. And not all halternecks are created equal - the cut of the halterneck, fabric used, size etc. And with your specific body shape.

I think Meghan (like a lot of other people with her body type) can look great in some halternecks, but not all. Same with all fashion really, it still has to suit you personally.

Meghan's really lucky to be in a position where she can afford to access great fashion, it's just frustrating at times when she doesn't.

Wrt the gold “Herz” dress that Meghan was wearing, as a general peeve of mine, why is there a random, relatively small cut out in the front? I can’t get my head around those at all. They seem pointless. Not enough flesh on show to be a statement or sexy. Just a smallish hole 🤷‍♀️

Urgh I hated the Hertz dress. It was slipping down her body because she removed the straps and didn’t add a bodice or some sort of structure to keep it upright. Ironically, because she didn’t have support, it slipped down and created lumps and bumps that she clearly doesn’t have. I also hated the cut out. The original design was better and a more relaxed fit (which seems to favour) but for some reason she went tight and strapless 🤷🏼‍♀️
