Would anyone like to join me in my attempt to unite the board and discuss our favourite royal outfits (before it enviably turns into another bun fight 🤣)

I’ll start with my favourite Catherine outfits first…

I thought Zara's garden party dress looked good. Eugenie's was classic navy and polka dot but I thought a little too long for her and in some shots the V-neck gaped too much. The Duchess of Gloucester was elegant as always - gloves perhaps a little heavy?

I think that's a previous garden party. The pic I linked with the pink montrosity dress is different to yours and mine is deffo from this week. And her hair was up not down

bluegreygreen · 22/05/2025 13:17

I think they were at the same garden party

deeahgwitch · 22/05/2025 16:07

I don’t think Sophie’s hair is the problem, just that some outfits don’t suit her.
I think her hair is nice.

Do like today's Princess of Wales outfit for ship launching (though it is a coat-dress again!)

Kate loves a bit of literal dressing. 😆

I mean, she looks perfect but I wish she was more stylish and fashion forward.

Not2identifying · 22/05/2025 18:25

I like the coat dresses (very Royal) but don't like theme dressing or the pockets on this. Regardless, she looks immaculate and appropriate.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 22/05/2025 18:31

I love the dress for the occasion.

She has such a lovely smile and laugh.

I suppose looking “immaculate and appropriate” is exactly what is called for though. There isn’t much point in being fashion forward when she is doing her job. Like the Late Queen and Queen Camilla, she has found a work formula and she sticks to it. Like a uniform I suppose. The main thing is that she is well groomed and her clothes fit her properly. No distractions and she can get on with what she is supposed to be doing

typo. Definitely shouldn’t have said “poo Tim beer” 😂

I was wondering why you were bringing poor Tim Laurence into it 🤣🤭

I really agree with this. She's in a certain role that requires her to be presented professionally and somewhat timelessly. She's in her 40s now and I think generally she knows what suits her and what she feels comfortable wearing.
I think she was one of the first royals to wear trousers suits and they look good on her. She is also obviously influenced by the Euro-royals which is a good thing.

Lascivious · 22/05/2025 19:11

I’m someone that doesn’t see the point of any of them apart from what they’re wearing. So the least Kate can do is wear edgier clothes 😂

Yes, I’m joking. A bit.

HonoriaBulstrode · 22/05/2025 20:22

And not take the focus from the event she is attending or the people she has come to meet. Her clothes should not be shouting 'Look at MEEE!'

prelovedusername · 22/05/2025 20:43

Sophie has nice hair but she does have a difficult hairline which wants to go its own way and that can limit styling options. I think she always looks elegant although I didn’t love the dress on this occasion.

My2cents1975 · 22/05/2025 21:09

In her autobiography Becoming Michelle Obama wrote of how she edited her wardrobe to reflect her role as First Lady. She wore more classic and timeless fashion as she was representing the USA to the world and left edgy to Hollywood.

IMHO, Catherine is following a similar path where she recognises that she flies the flag for the Royal Family, the UK and the realms. As such, she leaves edgy to the celebs and arrives in a timeless outfit, sartorially relevant and impeccably tailored.

This is a good photo. I wonder if they have just made the decision to look more ageless/classic. Much like they do with the children when they are young.

What would you expect him to wear to an event like this ? A suit is a suit ?

themightysossidge · 23/05/2025 11:29

I happened to see this stunning photo of Eugenie at the recent Garden party. She is another one who rocks a hat. Her make up is beautiful. While I know it's about the outfits it certainly appears that Eugenie is showing a much slimmer silhouette recently.

The problem for busty ladies as they get older is that it’s too easy to look matronly especially if you wear the high neck / round neck style of dress that is very much in vogue. So many of the designers favoured by the royals favour the higher neck. Fine for Kate - not such a good look on the York princesses or Sophie. Not everyone suits a v neck - and they’re often too low cut for the busty - but experimenting with square cut, boat necks and shallow vs often makes a world of difference.

And, as everyone has said, length needs to be long enough to look current, but not so long ( especially where skirt is on the fuller side) as to be frumpy.

Not necessarily…

I added a pic but it’s not showing. Google zoot suit!

HonoriaBulstrode · 23/05/2025 12:32

I hate that word. Who decides that something is 'frumpy'? Lady Louise is wearing a longer length in one of the pics above. Is she 'frumpy'?

CodandChipz · 23/05/2025 12:41

Yes a suit is a suit but it’s a classic cut with a classic tie

But that’s what he always wears when he wears a suit. And he is wearing a suit because it’s a formal occasion 🤷‍♀️

The York sisters have definitely improved with age, despite not being blessed in the looks department. Beatrice in particular dresses quite well.

Kate seems to favour higher necks. Perhaps for decorum. But has a lovely small bust, so can absolutely carry it off.
