Don't split hairs. Same difference!

OK then, if you are going with the same difference argument, simply being royal doesn’t guarantee wisdom and justice.

King Leopold of Belgium anyone?

What about our own Edward VIII who was chums with several prominent Nazis?

What about Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia?

Even the Kim family of North Korea is dynastic.

We were a mere polo accident away from having Prince Andrew as monarch at one point.

At least with an elected head of state we have a chance of holding them to account and “un-electing” them.

I never said "being royal guaranteed wisdom and justice".

I said that elected presidents were as likely if not more likely to be corrupt than royal families.

And I repeat, in which scenario, do ordinary people have the best chance of getting rid of a bad egg?

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 17/04/2025 00:36

I don't think ordinary people do have a chance of "getting rid of a bad egg"!

And that isn’t good is it?

At least Americans will be rid of Trump in four years … although he is now talking about changing the laws so he can sit for a third term.

If he was my brother, I couldn't say but seeing as it is spectacularly impossible in my case, I'm not in a position to judge.

If I loved him and believed him, I couldn't in all conscience turn my back on him.

He didn't "pay off a woman to avoid going to court"! You don't understand what a 'settlement' is! It's usually done for economic reasons, ie it would cost more to run the case than to settle it. In Andrew's case it was likely to increase the reputational damage, and additionally it was approaching the Jubilee and the Queen didn't want anything to detract from that - and why would she, after all her years of service!

There are plenty of people happy to "associate and be friends with someone who was friends with Epstein... and visited the island" - what about the President of the United States and the former President of the United States? Why aren't you and everyone else going after them, and the rest?

Well the president of the United States doesn't live here or funded via the taxpayer

Lifestooshort71 · 17/04/2025 07:45

I think most measured posters would agree that Andrew should face the law if he has broken it,
Yes, he's a total sleazeball but, did he break any laws? Plenty of righteous indignation on here that he isn't living in a murky swamp somewhere out of sight but has he actually been convicted of anything? Is what he did any worse than the behaviour of Russell Brand and his ilk? I'm not condoning what he did by the way (and he hasn't displayed anything in his character to redeem himself), but being a loathsome and entitled oaf isn't enough to banish him.

Samcro · 17/04/2025 07:51

i don't think his family have to have nothing to do with him. what they do in private is up to them. but seeing photos of the POW driving him, for instance is not a good look.
it may have been a "settlement" for financial reasons(yep don't believe that) but it was still a pay out of millions. the question has to be why? why pay millions (or get mummy to) if you have nothing to hide, why not talk to the FBI if you have nothing to hide.

TulipTiptoer · 17/04/2025 08:22

Totally agree @Samcro The monarchy would have done anything literally anything, to make it all go away. And if that involved paying out between $5m and $12m, so be it.

The payout did not happen because of increasing legal costs, it was because it was turning out to be a laughable farce, US legal people chasing Andrew from palace to palace trying to serve papers on him.

Samcro · 17/04/2025 09:27

talking about royal family events. I wonder what it is like to be Wolf's mum, seeing him on the tv on christmas day meeting strangers,

CathyorClaire · 17/04/2025 09:58

So you don’t think a single member of his family, including his daughters and grandchildren should have any contact with him ever again? Otherwise this shows they don’t have a moral compass?

I haven't said that no-one should be in contact with him. If that's what they want and choose it's up to them although I'd point out that both the ex and the kids appear to have low values themselves when it comes to lining their pockets and cosying up to dubious characters.

I do have an issue with the wider set up allowing him to accidentally on purpose take centre stage at events, dress up for parties we've paid for and casually have him riding shotgun in full public view.

They take us for mugs and they're right.

Me too. The time Andrew led a party of royals into the Church for a memorial service made me angry. Him and his ex wife grinning leading in a lot of royals, even Anne. And sat in the front row with Camilla. I think he is firmly back in the fold as far as they are all concerned. Why on earth they could not say to him... either slope along at the back or go in early through a side door. They don't have a problem with him, it's just us public who do, all our fault!

CathyorClaire · 17/04/2025 10:10

Mylovelygreendress · 16/04/2025 21:55

Agree. Maybe Andrew should spill the beans ??

This is an interesting point.

He's never thrown anyone under the bus to save his own skin yet he (and Maxwell ofc) have taken all the heat.

Odd.

themightysossidge · 17/04/2025 10:11

Of course there will be members of the RF who have an issue with him. To think otherwise is madness. That is akin to saying everyone who posts in support of Meghan on MN loves every single thing about her.

NewAgeNewMe · 17/04/2025 10:11

That was him taking advantage of no king and no William. Completely tone deaf. And should not have been allowed to happen.

I have a distant relative who is a criminal. I have nothing do with them, his immediate family on the other hand think he was set up in spite of the evidence.

Well.... they don't do anything about it do they? But to be fair, I suppose there is a hierarchy within the family and if the likes of his sister, Anne, is ok with him leading the royal party into church, or whatever, there is not much anyone can do about it.

You have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. That is akin to saying why does Meghan not get Harry some help for his obvious issues. We just don't know. Maybe she does, maybe she doesn't.

Of course none of us know! I am just discussing my thoughts on a discussion forum!
This is about Andrew, not Meghan or Harry.

Samcro · 17/04/2025 10:32

they seem to not care what the optics look like.
whether like some posters on here (RF topic) think he is just some poor bastard, or like others think he is as guilty as sin.
the RF should be aware that treating him like this looks bad.
they treat him better "in public" than they treat Harry, awful.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there @Samcro

We know Andrew is shameless and entitled enough to sneak in anywhere showing his face, after all, it's said he still thinks there could be a way back.

I agree. The optics are awful!

The optics around Charles, Harry and William are not good either.

Whatever the causes and the ins and outs on both sides, one somehow expects kings to be wise peacemakers who rise above family squabbles.

Andrew has brought shame on himself that is very true. Does that shame extend to the rest of his family though? It's an interesting one - how much should a family member be blamed because of a relative's dubious character. People like to refer to the Princess of Wales dodgy Uncle. Some like to refer to Meghan's cousin who was in prison. There was also another cousin in London with a knife. Andrew is a contentious bugger for sure and he has definitely been a thorn in the side of the RF.

themightysossidge · 17/04/2025 10:52

Really @Enoughisenough689 you expect Kings to be peacemakers ? Not in my history world.

TulipTiptoer · 17/04/2025 10:54

It is an interesting one. His wife, sorry ex wife, and daughter supporting them are doing exactly what any other family would do. You really only see a complete cut off of a close family member if perhaps they have comitted a heinous unspeakable crime.
What the wider family think and how they handle him is something we just don't know. For any other family it wouldn't matter, but when you are presenting yourself to the public because of being royal, it's a different matter. The great british public will always have an opinion!
