What is going on with MN?

I've asked this before, but why?
Why do parliament etc. turn a blind eye/ actively help cover up?
What's in it for them?
ditto newspapers etc.

Newspapers do it because if they don't they don't get preferential treatment from the Palace, don't get 'scoops' or invited to fancy dinners etc. I have no idea why Parliament do it. Bloody hell, even Nicola Sturgeon bent over and gave The Late Queen exemptions from environmetal legislation that applied to all landowners in Scotland. Her son and grandson are apparently so concerned about the environment but she didn't want to walk the walk herself. Instead buying them all brand new helicopters and range rovers etc.Clearly all the things they tell us to do don't apply to them. Its all 'do as I say so I don't have to'.

Newspapers have a profit incentive . And the likes of Murdoch and friends I suppose enjoy their influence and power too, not only reporting on the news but shaping the narrative to some extent. The RF have entered a Faustian pact with the press, as they owe them their existence, and in return for favourable coverage that shows them in a good light, their minions allegedly have to do some not-so-favourable things, like leaking stories about those who are less powerful and more exposed.

Our parliamentary system is another arena in which favours are requested and repaid. The monarch’s soft power and influence is considerable. There’s the honours system for a start, or the prospect of the reward of a seat in the House of Lords, where many members of the aristocracy (and some of the King’s friends) sit.

A top down system of back slaps which encourages obedience. MPs should be scrutinising the minutiae of legislation and challenging power, representing the interests of the ordinary man in the street, Instead, with a few notable exceptions, they are protecting their own privilege.

And this is one of the reasons why, imho, issues like child poverty and inadequate essential public services, appalling homelessness, and stagnating wages, have been allowed to take hold, while we obediently line the streets and wave our flags at a passing gold coach! Madness!

.

PoppysAunt · 02/04/2025 20:19

@Itsbeenlabelledhasntit well, why do you do that? Why would you line the streets and wave your flag? I would never do that.

Excuse my whimsy please PoppysAunt 😊

I wouldn’t do it either; I wasn’t making an entirely literal point.

Edited:

Many people do though and I was trying to illustrate that they are ignoring a lot of important issues while being distracted by the trappings!

PoppysAunt · 02/04/2025 20:28

Would you go out into the street and wave a flag for Harry and Meghan? Tens if thousands did, especially on their wedding day.

No I wouldn’t! But nor would I comment on endless threads that are hostile to them.

The only people I have stood in the street for and cheered on, have been our local striking farmers who have been shafted by several major supermarket chains.

Fair enough. I just don't understand people who are very much against the principles of monarchy, yet are avid supporters of Harry and Meghan. They're very Royal indeed, and the embodiment of all that unearned status, wealth and privilege.
I don't understand why some people on here would support some royals, and not others, it just seems strange to me.

There’s a section of republicans - on here and elsewhere on the internet etc - who see Meghan and Harry as disrupters whose behaviour has the power to discredit the monarchy and damage it enough to make it a more attractive prospect to encourage the republican movement.

It looked as though that might be an effective play in early 2020 but based on the behaviour and some quite batshit moves by H&M has had the opposite effect and improved the popularity and ratings of the current senior royals.

I do think the level of ‘hate watching’ of the Sussexes is interesting in a PR / modern media perspective and I imagine it’s a very difficult thing to withstand.

My sympathies for Meghan are still hugely tempered by the Ulvade publicity stunt which was beyond awful.

PoppysAunt · 03/04/2025 06:00

@wordler I do agree with you to an extent, and I think your second paragraph is correct. When they first moved away I thought it was positive, I applauded them. I liked it when I heard that they wouldn't take a title for Archie.
In fact, they just intended to be as royal as anyone, just in California. . They've managed to do something I never thought would happen - made me somewhat admire and stmpathise with Charles, a man for whom I had previously scant regard.
The monogrammed stationery with a crown, the coat of arms, the children being Prince and Princess, the quasi royal tours. It's all there.
Now he wants the taxpayer to fund his security on his terms and whims. Very royal.

PoppysAunt · 03/04/2025 07:08

@Itsbeenlabelledhasntit - Spare isn't "half as bad as it's been made out to be by the Daily Mail".
Here we have it. It's the Daily Maul's fault. It's never Harry's.
I have read Spare, I never read a review by the DM. I'm just going to say this again, my opinions of Harry and Meghan are based on what they have said and done. Themselves, directly in Spare, Oprah, Netflix, etc etc. don't dismiss opinions as gleaned from the tabloids. Mine aren't.

Nonsense. The vicious threads about M&H have been constant for years. They’re fucking gross and I don’t understand why it’s allowed.

And they have been creating or found themselves in controversy for years , Harry alone last week and still on going has Sentebale and next week there's RAVEC. They spend thousand on PR to be talked about, unfortunately for them not everything goes to plan.

It’s called differing opinions. You may adore them, but plenty don’t and they are free to share that, just as you are.

A bit like Harry’s use of private planes whilst preaching about the environment

I don’t care about them either way. What I do care about and what I find disturbing is a group of grown woman constantly finding reason to attack two people. It’s bullying.

to find the threads disturbing given their volume and how long it’s been going on doesn’t mean I adore anyone. I get why it’s easier to pretend there’s something weird about me than to accept there’s something wrong with the hate filled threads - particularly if you contribute to them.

Noone should be preaching about the environment if they are using planes, cars, buying things made from other countries, buying food that's been imported and so on.

I think there's a difference between buying cherry tomatoes and flying everywhere by private plane. Come on.

Samcro · 03/04/2025 08:13

why is Harry always the one that gets the bit about preaching?
William preaches whilst doing the very things he preaches against. im sure the rest do as well.
for some reason its alwasy Harry that gets greif.
his dad and mum did interviews and books. DOY still dines out on being royal. don't get me started on the tindalls

Once again: if you see hate on here, report it. Harry and Meghan are very controversial figures. They are very royal and very privileged.
They seek publicity, and have used it themselves in very negative ways. People will comment. Perhaps you don't like the comments, perhaps you think they're unfair. However, it's not bullying.

Well said. It's the sheer volume, it's the fact that if anything has happened (usually tiddly squat), a thread of a thousand posts can fill up in 24 hours all with major criticism. Like the NF series, 7 threads on it, that's 7,000 posts ! All because a woman did a lifestyle series. She did nothing wrong in it. So.. she used flower sprinkles, arranged fruit in a pattern and wore cream. What sacrilege! She really should be in court and charged for this!

If those 7,000 posts aren't bullying a woman, I don't know what is.

They also do it for peerages and other titles that elevate them above Joe Public. The system self perpetuates with rewards for its minions. With that in mind there is no chance that Sir Keir will be making anyone accountable.

This is almost me, I don't care for any of them. They are our version of the Kardashians, but less interesting and with fewer actual skills.

there is no point reporting. the moderation on these threads is really off.
people can be hounded and attacked for daring to be positive and nothing is done.

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree with the moderation. As far the "hounding off", I can't see where that's happened, but perhaps you have.
