It's not as if Invictus will bring thousands of visitors to Birmingham, who will spend money in the city, or have primetime global tv coverage that raises the city's profile worldwide - as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games do.

Watching Harry over the years I sometimes wonder whether Andrew is silent or silenced. I suspect that he has less money than Harry and finance has been used to achieve his withdrawal from public life. Going by the little we know of his dealings recently, which is pretty awful, I think the fact he isn't careering around embarrassing everyone is proof that someone has leverage.

The death of mummy has made all the difference. Brother Charles has had words although he did appear at St George's Windsor last year, leading the family ascKC11 was ill and PW dealing with Kate's cancer diagnosis.

The issue wasn't with the awkward "choreography" on stage, it was about the subsequent request that SC should release a statement in support of Meghan. SC declined.
A Sentebale spokesperson has cofirmed that after SC declined, PH contacted her directly to follow this up. It has been said this follow up was a demand she "explain herself" . Now we don't know that for certain but the existence of that communication has been confirmed.

No we don’t know it for certain, there are two sides to every story, and I prefer to reserve judgement until we do.

Thanks for such an interesting post @My2cents1975

The crepe mix that transforms a typical weekend breakfast into a chance to reminisce…

🤣🤣🤣

Marcel Proust this is not! (I personally have no happy memories linked to using boxes of processed crepe mix…clearly I am missing out)

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta

... are you saying that Sophie Chandauka should've put up and shut up about her claims of mistreatment and bullying but that Meghan was right to speak out about her claims of mistreatment and bullying within the BRF?

No, I'm not saying that, not at all. I don't know what the circumstances are behind all of this, there are always two sides to every story and we should wait until the Charity Commission's investigation is complete.

What I am saying is that for the benefit of Sentebale, which will now be looking for new patrons, trustees, board members, funders etc, she should not have toured the TV studios this weekend airing the organisations' dirty laundry, whoever was at fault. What she should have done is managed a positive spin on the situation so that the organisation's reputation didn't suffer.

I have no doubt that the polo incident was infuriating. But she didn't need to talk it. She could have used the opportunity to talk about how she wanted to move the organisation forward in a new direction, to find African support that empowers the African communities it helps. But she didn't do that and now the story is about mud flinging between her and Harry, and worse, her and Meghan, (two African women who both want to empower women seemingly at war). That's the worst outcome of all for Sentebale and the young people it helps. It's like teachers fighting in the playground.

Net result: Sentebale suffers.

At the risk of sounding juvenile - Harry started it. HE has risked Sentebale’s reputation, and I imagine DrC’s disclosure is the tip of the iceberg. To say anything but the truth in context would be being complicit in a cover up

Indeed. Such a shame that the Sussexes were believed on their unsubstantiated claims about events when in the RF.

Whatdoweknowsofar · 31/03/2025 16:29

Yes. If I was CEO of a charity, as a fairly anonymous executive, I wouldn’t care where I stood in the line up. I would want the photographer to capture the main most recognisable “players” in the group, to bring in as much publicity for the cause as possible.

Edited

SC’s the Chair, not the CEO. She’s a trustee, not an executive. As has been explained over and over by knowledgeable posters.

And those photos you suggest had already been done, and one was then requested with the Chair of Sentebale present.

Dear oh dear.

Probably best you do hold off on your judgment.

p.s. Many of us here are mild-mannered republicans, some not even from the UK.

AtIusvue · 31/03/2025 16:44

So while Megs is inviting you to reminisce about Meg eating crepes in France, Harry’s world is falling apart.

What goes on in that bloody house? The whiplash experienced by staff going from room to room- from Harry staring at the wall, having an existential crisis in one room to Meg joyfully staring into the middle distance in another.

jeffgoldblum · 31/03/2025 16:45

Whatdoweknowsofar · 31/03/2025 16:38

I’m not sure that is true tbh. I think when the entire board of such a high profile charity resigns in unison, none of it would have gone un-noticed by the press. And the number of people resigning meant that news was more likely to leak out.

Especially when Harry and Meghan are the focus of so many news stories atm. They can’t blow their noses without a journalist commenting on whether they are doing it correctly or not!

You are entitled to your opinion but we have already had lipstickalley , saying exactly the same over and over and over again on the other thread!

most of us find the available information quite sufficient to form our own opinions and don’t need lectures from anyone else.

"Backpacking through France"

Anyone else get a flashback to Joey's backpacking through Europe story on Friends?

It just makes me giggle.

But you are happy to ascribe SC's frustration around that polo event to her position on stage? Based on what? You have no basis but are happy to put that opinion out there.

BemusedAmerican · 31/03/2025 16:48

Paid for by Thomas Markle?

MissRoseDurward · 31/03/2025 16:48

Has 'there are two sides to every story' been added to the Bingo card? Must be the most used phrase on MN in the past 24 hours. Time for a new script, perhaps.

@Serenster I have no happy memories of boxed crepe mix either , but Oh the treat when Granny came to babysit and we got Angel Delight . Unashamedly crap processed pudding - I dare not think what went into it - but we loved it. For balance Granny did make pancakes from scratch.

I do not consider myself a royalist although I do like some members of Royal family. For years, I have followed what is essentially an upper-class soap opera and recognise that idle gossip about fellow human beings is morally dubious.

Maybe but the fact it went under the radar for a month suggests that this may not have happened.

There's at least 5 different brands of lemon ginger tea in my local fruit stand.

I think there’s at least three in my local Asda / Walmart! The place is an understaffed shithole these days so yeah, sweet memories …

Being classified as a Black woman is very different in the US versus sub-Saharan Africa. This is a bit of a long post but hope it helps.

The US uses the "one drop rule." If you have some black ancestry, you can claim that you are black even if you do not have stereotypically African features. The US has certain racial categorizations such as quadroons (1 of 4 grandparents was African), octoroons (1 of 8 great-grandparents was African)
PBS explains one drop rule

Within African Americans there is the issue of colorism. Lighter skinned slaves, often progeny of the master, more often worked in the houses, had access to basic education to perform tasks and better food. Darker skinned slaves, worked in the fields with no access to literacy or good quality food. Compounding the literacy dividend head start over the generations has resulted in lighter skinned African Americans tending to have more wealth vs their darker skinned cohorts. This created an unfortunate association that lighter skin meant you were somehow "better". So, you have some individuals who are proud of being a lighter shade of Black or "passing" for White and are excited when their progeny have "blue blue blue eyes."

Africans have a far different understanding of race than Americans. In sub-Saharan Africa, you need two Black parents to be classified as Black. In Zimbabwe, where Sophie Chandauka is from, M, due to her mixed heritage would be classified as "Coloured" (0.5% of Zimbabwe’s population) and not “Black”, (98% of Zimbabwe’s population), so from a Zimbabwean point of view, M is not a fellow black woman to SC.

Apartheid was not only present in South Africa but was present in most of colonial Africa, from Kenya to Zimbabwe featuring racially segregated hospitals to be born, racially segregated graveyards to be laid to rest and racial stratification of life in between (schools, elevators, offices, prisons, etc.).

M would be classified as “Coloured” in Eastern & Southern Africa and “Half-caste” in West Africa. Coloured children were whisked from their families as soon as an authority spotted then and were raised by the state. The State then punished the parents with prison time. Trevor Noah in his book "Born a Crime" detailed how his mother's family hid him, and while outside his mother pretended to be his nanny so the South African state would not take him. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

As you can imagine children raised in government orphanages did not have the best start to life as they were routinely neglected and ignored. To this day, social studies by race in former colonies such as Kenya or Zimbabwe show that the Coloured population is over-represented in crime, alcoholism, drug abuse, etc. Unfortunately, as a consequence, the Black African population looks down on the Coloured population as having no culture and no roots and views any marriage as bringing in problems to the family.

all very interesting but i doubt many people in this country would call her African.
just like there are very few identifying as Viking etc.
Always seems a bit silly to identify with a culture/ country you've not really experienced

MayaKovskaya · 31/03/2025 16:51

Thank you for allowing me to express my opinion but respectfully, I really don’t need your permission.

I wasn’t giving a lecture. I was expressing my views freely like every other poster on this thread has done.

I have been on Mumsnet for years under different names and I am not part of any lobbying group if that is what you are implying.

I don’t know who lipstickalley is as I haven’t read the other thread.

If you are suggesting that I can’t comment because I happen to disagree with the majority of posters on here, then please say so and I will take it up with Mumsnet HQ.

MrsLeonFarrell · 31/03/2025 16:52

Also I question how high profile Sentebele is. I doubt journalists are checking the charity commission docket frequently for stories.

Alternating with admonishions that we should reserve judgement (i. e. shut up about it) until the CC have concluded their report.

At least the dodgy AI poster seems to have gone for a rest.
