Prue Leith on Meghan Marble

I just saw this article about Prue Leith's pronouncement on Markle's new programme, which she says she would never watch. She says that she isn't a Markle fan because of all the "touchy feeliness" and talk about what creams you put on your hands. She says life is too short to think about what people think of you. Prue Leith is around 80 years old (?) is alway impeccably and colourfully dressed, her hair just so, her skin is lovely, she is always talking about food that is or isn't "worth the calories" - all of which which suggests that she very much cares what people think of her and that she takes a lot of time with her own appearance even though she is much older than Meghan who I would argue - as I would for all young women - that they should enjoy and relish their youth and beauty and make the most of it while it lasts.

My question however is about why Leith found it so easy to make this comment in public. I can't imagine her judging another celebrity so publicly and forcefully. So what makes Meghan different to the others? What makes Leith so incensed that she had to be so negative about her in a TV interview? I am sure that Meghan is not the only touchy feely, hand moisturising celebrity on the planet.

Aside from your feelings about her estrangement from the royal family which has been discussed ad nauseam what legitimate reason is there for treating her like that?

I think Prue Leith is an odious woman and always have done.

I like Meghan. Admittedly, she isn’t my favourite person, but I can’t stand the constant criticism and nit picking she receives by the whole world and his wife.

I am strongly of the opinion that if Meghan was white, she wouldn’t receive 90% of the hate and blame. It’s the same story with Lewis Hamilton too who is also mixed race. There is so much vilification and a nasty undertone in reporting towards both and it truly astounds and sickens me.

Well as far as we know Meghan hasn't drowned a litter of kittens.

I can guarantee that had Meghan been “white” and behaved the way she has , she would have received criticism much sooner!

I think it's a bit ageist to say that it's wrong to judge people who are in their 80s for their life choices - PL is an active, vibrant woman, not some frail, vulnerable person with dementia, who needs extra consideration from society.
Obviously women shouldn't be viewed more harshly than men for the same behaviour but married people cheating or single people sleeping with married people or betraying friendships isn't a good look on either sex!
As for MM , I suspect this comment was a small part of the interview that's been made into something bigger because anything that involves MM sells magazines! But also MM hasn't been backward in coming forward with her own opinions - it's fair game for others to do likewise maybe?

It sounds like a character out of a story for children: "Megan Marble rolled down to the park to see what all the other games were up to. She smiled as she saw Kate the Kite flying high in the sky and William the Water Pistol giggling as he watered the flowers while Harry the Hula Hoop whirled around so fast that he made her dizzy"

A provocation - well, a genuine question which it would be good to have a rational answer to rather than an emotional one: is it possible that one's actions or words are racist even though the person issuing them isn't racist? I would say that could obtain.

I am not a racist but I can imagine that I could say something (either out of ignorance or carelessness) that could be judged as racist. That has got to be possible if we live within a culture where institutional racism is rife. The media built up a lot of hatred for Megan by demonising her. They even made out that she was a "hood rat" and that has to conjure up some kind of response in the minds of people who consume that material. The stuff that Clarkson said about her? No, I can't imagine that being said about a white woman - although given the rampant misogyny we now face who knows?

But what I marvel at is their ability to be able to tell from their phone or computer if another poster is a person of colour or not. It’s linked to if you approve of Meghan you must be a POC and if you disapprove of her you’re not a POC. I’d love to know the technology behind it.
