Prue Leith on Meghan Marble

I just saw this article about Prue Leith's pronouncement on Markle's new programme, which she says she would never watch. She says that she isn't a Markle fan because of all the "touchy feeliness" and talk about what creams you put on your hands. She says life is too short to think about what people think of you. Prue Leith is around 80 years old (?) is alway impeccably and colourfully dressed, her hair just so, her skin is lovely, she is always talking about food that is or isn't "worth the calories" - all of which which suggests that she very much cares what people think of her and that she takes a lot of time with her own appearance even though she is much older than Meghan who I would argue - as I would for all young women - that they should enjoy and relish their youth and beauty and make the most of it while it lasts.

My question however is about why Leith found it so easy to make this comment in public. I can't imagine her judging another celebrity so publicly and forcefully. So what makes Meghan different to the others? What makes Leith so incensed that she had to be so negative about her in a TV interview? I am sure that Meghan is not the only touchy feely, hand moisturising celebrity on the planet.

Aside from your feelings about her estrangement from the royal family which has been discussed ad nauseam what legitimate reason is there for treating her like that?

Dame Prue Leith says she would not watch Meghan’s Netflix show: I am not a fan

The TV cook said she is unsure of ‘all that sort of touchy-feely mindfulness’.

All I can find is that she made some lighthearted comments about celebrity bake off participants only doing the show for fun. And she defended Gregg Wallace. Meghan receives special treatment.

I think you probably need to spend a bit longer than 18 minutes on your research before making your pronouncement.

Slut shaming an 85 year old! 🙄

CowTown · 15/03/2025 12:04

I don’t think it’s slut shaming—she can bonk as many single men as she wants. No judgement. It’s when you’re shagging married men and breaking up families with children, particularly the husband of your mum’s BFF, which crosses several lines.

You are aware that Diana also shagged married men and broke up families?
and that Meghan herself was actually still living and dating Corey when she started dating Harry?
i personally don’t judge other women for their personal sex lives, afterall men are not subject to such comments.
but what an 85 year old woman did in the past has no bearing on her right to have an opinion about someone else . One would even argue that the older man in question has more to answer for.
had this woman made positive comments, we wouldn’t be having these comments!
so yes I stick by …slut shaming an 85 year old woman.

She should worry about her own dubious character, before slating others! But no doubt all she is worried about is getting attention to the fact that she is the new judge, on the bake off. She has no grace.

She’s been a judge on Bake Off since 2017 so new is a bit optimistic.

APlateOfMixedFanciesAndANicePotOfTea · 15/03/2025 12:32

Prue Leith is a trained Cordon Bleu chef, cookery writer, and had a Michelin starred restaurant in the 1960s. So I can imagine that MM's approach to a cookery programme - all hugs and packet pancake mixes for example - is not something that PL would consider mainstream cookery.

Rayne Kruger was an absolute sack of shit too…and if there are any threads about him on MN I’d be happy to contribute my thoughts there.

Ive been reading,
r Kruger married his first wife nan who was a widow with three children, she was 40 , he was 23 .
they had no children together.
prue fell in love with him aged 21 , he was 41 , the affair lasted 13 years kept a secret, no one knew including the wife .
he divorced his wife and married prue in 1974 , she was 34 , he was 54 .
his ex wife’s children had been grown up adults through this whole time frame.
they had one child and adopted another , they remained married until his death .
I therefore can’t see this as anything else than just two people falling in love under unfortunate circumstances.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 15/03/2025 13:48

To answer the OPs question- yes, it is ok to slate Meghan in the UK press. The media actively encourage it and because the people who don’t like Meghan really hate her, they adore reading other people insult Meghan.

An interview where Prue slagged off any other TV cooking show might be seen as controversial and possibly come back to bite her, but it’s safe to insult Meghan publicly and a canny PR move as it will mean your interview discussing your own show will be more prominent in the online newspapers sites.

What about Prue’s affair with her married customer, Jake, in 1973? How can we minimise that too?

CowTown · 15/03/2025 14:03

Oh yes I read about him too ! , the millionaire Jake who pursued her ! , he was already separated and in the process of divorcing his wife.

and despite the fact you seem overly upset and taking this personally, I was not in fact minimising anything!
I was interested so went of and read several articles and biographies of all three , just to get the facts .
and the facts are that although it’s not something I would encourage, it is not quite the salacious, sordid story that was hinted at here , and the breaking up a young family charge is completely false as the “ children “ we’re all adults who had left home at this point! .
I don’t like to judge without facts , facts matter .

Cosyvibes · 15/03/2025 15:42

Cannot stand Pru and I stopped watching the bake off, after she stood up and said we were all being absolutely ridiculous when Dominic Cummings done the special eye test to Bernard Castle.

I’ve never watched it , is she as irritating as Paul Hollywood? Can’t stand any of them to be fair ,
all seem to smug for my tastes!

'The Great British Bake Off judge, 85, was promoting the second series of Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen when she was asked if she had seen Meghan’s new lifestyle series, which also involves cooking and entertaining guests.'

She was asked. She answered. It's not a great mystery.

Exactly this, she was asked a question, she answered the question, whats the issue

And as for wearing nice things and watching her calories implying she cares waht people think of her, perhaps she doing that for herself OP, ever though of that?

soupyspoon · 15/03/2025 16:02

ZebedeeDougalFlorence · 14/03/2025 19:39

But mostly celebrities are like politicians. She wouldn't have answered as candidly if the question had been posed about any other public figure - unless they were a serial killer or something - but she felt that she could answer that way because it was about MM.

Edited

Are you sure about that OP because any time Ive read about her or seen her in anything other that bake off she just says what she thinks any old time

Her son is a massive Tory and I assume she is too. She doesnt care what she says from my understanding. Nor I suppose should she. Does she havwe to be nice to everyone and about everyone? Do I have to agree with her?

Agreed and I find it incredible that an innocuous comment about not liking a tv show - gasp - leads to dredging up someones sex life.

To prove what, that she's wrong not to like the tv show?

What madness is this.

NewMarmiteJar · 15/03/2025 16:07

It’s become almost acceptable to shit talk Meghan publicly in some circles.

Prue is far from perfect and now we all know she’s unkind. I’m not a fan of MM or these odd American lifestyle programmes shes making and I don’t feel the need to tell anyone or watch them.

circleback · 15/03/2025 16:09

I am actually a fan of Danny Kruger’s at the moment as he seems to be doing a good job scrutinising the assisted dying bill.

Oh thats funny because you just have?

And presumably if someone just happened to ask you, being in the same type of business, if you liked it, you would answer the question. Like anyone normal would?

Cosyvibes · 15/03/2025 16:16

She definitely is @jeffgoldblum I've always thought Pru to be really up herself and full of airs and graces. She definitely is a massive Tory sure she's friends with Boris and all that lot. Didn't know about the affairs etc doesn't surprise me tbh.

See now to me @Cosyvibes, those are legitimate reasons not to like someone, I personally have no opinion on her as I don’t watch her , but I dislike paul Hollywood, I find him smug and arrogant.
however i don’t like slut shaming of any women, particularly as a means to defend another.

Exactly this

Also ok to question her judgement over those awful necklaces

Highlighting an unkind remark from someone does not make one unkind.

I suppose I’m dignified enough to know when saying nothing is best.

This. Her cookery bible is my go to for wonderful, complex dishes.
