Prue Leith on Meghan Marble

I just saw this article about Prue Leith's pronouncement on Markle's new programme, which she says she would never watch. She says that she isn't a Markle fan because of all the "touchy feeliness" and talk about what creams you put on your hands. She says life is too short to think about what people think of you. Prue Leith is around 80 years old (?) is alway impeccably and colourfully dressed, her hair just so, her skin is lovely, she is always talking about food that is or isn't "worth the calories" - all of which which suggests that she very much cares what people think of her and that she takes a lot of time with her own appearance even though she is much older than Meghan who I would argue - as I would for all young women - that they should enjoy and relish their youth and beauty and make the most of it while it lasts.

My question however is about why Leith found it so easy to make this comment in public. I can't imagine her judging another celebrity so publicly and forcefully. So what makes Meghan different to the others? What makes Leith so incensed that she had to be so negative about her in a TV interview? I am sure that Meghan is not the only touchy feely, hand moisturising celebrity on the planet.

Aside from your feelings about her estrangement from the royal family which has been discussed ad nauseam what legitimate reason is there for treating her like that?

Dame Prue Leith says she would not watch Meghan’s Netflix show: I am not a fan

The TV cook said she is unsure of ‘all that sort of touchy-feely mindfulness’.

@ZebedeeDougalFlorence Why shouldn't Prue Leith use her voice (as MM likes to say) and express an honest opinion that she doesn't like someone. Why should she be obliged to lie and fudge? Don't you think quite a few questionable celebrities of little talent would have had their gravy train run out of track had people been allowed to express an honest opinion about them? Leith is an extremely experienced cook and restauranteur, with decades of work behind her in the field. She'd never in a million years hope to get the sort of Netflix deal MM did for doing nothing whatsoever of note in the food industry, simply for marrying Prince Harry. MM has done considerably less than many, many talented YouTubers, ordinary working women without fancy studios, sets, cameramen, editors etc, who produce wonderful cookery tutorials, lifestyle blogs and tips for enhancing everyday living on a budget. What is Leith supposed to say about MM's universally panned programme (panned across all media, left, right, mainstream and independent) that doesn't sound like an insincere lie? Why should she have to lie?

There are so many celebs/"stars" that many of us would deem undeserving of all the opportunities they are given over others supposedly more talented (me for a start, even though I am not beautiful and cannot sing, dance or act). That's the way of the world, isn't it?

I was being humorous!
however you seem to be deficient, but no those are not the only celebs I could reference!
do you really want me to provide you with a list?
because I can and will !
and it will include many up to date celebrities but a fair warning, it’s a going to be a very , very long list!
and it may well derail your thread!
do you wish me to compile and post?

Please don't. Life is too short.

Do you want Prue to be silent? Or silenced?

Yes, and my point is that if they were called out as crap and benefiting from nepotism, rather than being fawned over by people fearful of being criticised for being honest and critical, actual talented, hardworking people would get a better shot.

It's all so subjective, though. The person you consider talented I might think undeserving. We have to hope that real talent shines through in the end and that the less talented are eventually found out and fade out of view.

I don't think it's asking for someone to be "silenced" to consider why they dragged a fellow celeb when I haven't heard about them having form for doing that.

Also "silencing" makes it sound as though Megan is some sort of menace who it is important to call out. She's harmless, no?

You could mention a couple if it will help our discussion.

For example, I have never heard of a celeb who was asked about another celeb's film saying that they don't like the celeb and won't be watching their film. If you have an example like that I would be quite interested.

I think there's rather more objectivity involved than you are making out in most cases.

Yes, that has to be true, otherwise it wouldn't be so common. Good point.

No Meghan Markle is not harmless. She's involved in quite a lot of politics, if you care to look beyond her sprinkling flowers on crap.

BitOutOfPractice · 17/03/2025 14:12

You ok Meghan?

Seriously, why do you care so much? That’s not a rhetorical question. I’d genuinely like to know. Why do you care so much about either of these women?

I disagree. The older you get, the less you care about what other people think of you. Prue isn't taking good care of herself and dressing well to please others, she's doing it for herself, it's an act of self-care. With regards to Meghan Markle, she's expressed her opinion that's all. We're all entitled to one.

It's a bit bizarre to have an opinion on a TV show you've never watched.

Also while your comment is true of a lot of old people, it's not really true for someone who has a specific character for their job (and a stylist).

Ok of the top of my head ( I’m in the middle of groceries!)
tommy Lee jones is allegedly reported as stating about Jim Carey… he can’t watch any film he’s in or even look at his face as he thinks he’s a ridiculous Buffoon.

Not unless you’re a public figure and what you say makes headlines. Just my opinion.

Now that's a bit ridiculous. Imagine Churchill getting asked about Hitler's invasion of Poland and him not being allowed to say what he thinks because it would make headlines 😂

glitterturd · 17/03/2025 14:28

Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong - there's an example!

I actually think the pp's opinion is spot on. I think it was a "mean girl" move by Prue, and a jumping on a bandwagon. I think MM is now a very easy target.

Meghan MADE herself an easy target. She is a mean , nasty , snake of a person.

jeffgoldblum · 17/03/2025 14:32

Jon hamm about Kim Kardashian and to a lesser extent Paris Hilton .

Really? I've never watched The Black and White Minstrel Show or Benny Hill. I sure as hell have an opinion on both! Meghan's show has been all over the media for a couple of weeks, and if you are in the industry, as Prue Leith is, you will no doubt have heard much and talked about it much. Most lay people who haven't watched it will have learned enough through the media to make an assessment. All the media, across the political spectrum, both mainstream and independent, have panned the show. Do you not think people who haven't watched the show can't form an opinion on it based on that? Plus all the zillions of available clips online showing the "good" bits.

Prue Leith has been in the public eye and in the media for decades and has been dressed in the individual and colourful way she does for decades. Just because some of you never heard of her before Bake Off doesn't mean she wasn't a complete person before it. She was chosen because of who she already was (a top rated chef with a personality that could measure up to Mary Berry's), Bake-Off hasn't made her who she is.

glitterturd · 17/03/2025 14:35

What about Lorraine Kelly saying " meh" ? Is that ok ? Lorraine must have spikes up her arse though from all the fences she has sat on over the years and all for 💵
