Yes, I thought that too, but he didn't sound particularly fond of Margaret from what he wrote about her, so it's odd to have conflated the feelings he expressed at the passing of his GGM with the passing of a mean great aunt.

I agree, terrible fact checking and editing!

No I don’t think he was overly keen on Margaret.

There really is no excuse for not getting the death of his great grandmother correct for his book.

MissRoseDurward · 16/02/2025 22:26

When Spare first came out his account didn't chime with me. It took all of 5 minutes to find a BBC report on QETQM's death and other details about Charles and the boys flying back from the ski trip.

I remember that it was Easter because a radio station I was listening to - possibly Classic fm - was counting down a Top 100 Favourite Tunes over the weekend, and they interrupted the programme with the news of the QM's death, then didn't continue with the countdown.

Another reason to remember that trip, was because Harry had recently been busted for doing drugs at Eton

Presumably why he doesn't remember! Lucky not to have been booted - Almost anyone else probably would have been.

There isn't. And setting any possible amusement about his ridiculous book aside, it's just terribly sad that he didn't think enough of his surviving family who loved QETQM - especially his dad - to give an accurate and genuine account of how her passing came to his attention, instead of making up another self pitying account of abandonment.

That's so interesting @MissRoseDurward . I wonder of you would have remembered listening to that Top 100 but for her death?

I do wonder what on earth Harper Collins were thinking not getting these basic facts checked, especially with all the evidence available at a couple of clicks.

TheMeasure · 16/02/2025 22:37

I remember watching some sort of royal documentary a few years back where William and Harry were filmed watching and commentating on some old family video footage. There was a shot of Princess Margaret in a corridor at Buckingham Palace and they (W&H) were laughing, saying "Oh look, there Margo, avoiding the kids as usual" (or something along those lines).

Wasn't there some woe is me account about her getting him some pencils with fish on the end for Xmas or some such? For the uninitiated readers who didn't know they gave each other cheap, joke presents.

MissRoseDurward · 16/02/2025 22:53

Probably not. I just had it on as fairly innocuous background music.

This from the Mirror, quoting Bachau "478952259
"She only helped to adjust my wheelchair for the photo, ensuring I was comfortable and included. This story doesn’t reflect the genuinely happy and caring moment. I'm disappointed that this compassionate act has been misrepresented."
Meanwhile, Nick Booth, CEO of the True Patriot Love Foundation, said: "Recent reports have painted an unfair and entirely inaccurate representation of the wonderful morning Team Canada spent with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. All the members of Team Canada were thrilled to have had the Duke and Duchess join them at their welcome breakfast

@CurlewKate and @Jacquettes I am very happy to hear she was respectful to Adria Brochu - the athlete in the wheelchair. I have criticisms of Meghan but I am not in the business of criticising her where it isn't due.

Anyway I did read Adria won the silver in the sit ski event so 👏to her.

elessar · 16/02/2025 23:01

Given that athletes had to sign a non disparagement agreement to compete in the games, I hardly think the competitor would have felt able to voice her true opinion if she did feel offended by Meghan's behaviour.

However, let's hope that her account is a reflection of how she genuinely feels.

It’s so odd that people who don’t like this woman start so many threads about her. It’s very very different to other celebrities. Extremely noticeable.

I wonder what the difference could be?

Don’t be so predictable and boring (yawn).

My thoughts exactly, @elessar .

I will be bearing in mind the looks on the faces of the people in the crowd behind her.

I can’t remember exactly what the present was but a pen or pencil rings a bell. I think he called it a cold blooded present and that he pitied her or something along those lines.

FromThePrismOfJammyTodger · 16/02/2025 23:12

Ugh, so nasty. He wrote that at a time QEII was alive, and there's every chance she would have read what he wrote about her beloved sister.

Some people posted that they weren’t able to find news on the actual games, only news re Harry and Meghan at the games.

I find posts like this one to be unnecessarily unpleasant.

it was a biro pen wrapped in a rubber fish.

“He also said he didn't know her well, and that she "could kill a houseplant with one scowl" “

The gift didn’t cause me to laugh but the description of Margaret’s scowls certainly did.

He didn’t write about the pen and Margaret before the Queen died though. The Queen died in 2022, Harry’s book was published early 2023. Unless Harry wrote or said that earlier?

dorathexplorer · 17/02/2025 00:08

She probably knew what a wanker Harry was.

@FromThePrismOfJammyTodger I suspect she would not have read it herself - but no matter - someone could have told her or she would have got wind of it somehow. But then I don't think Harry gave a flying hoot about what his family thought when he was writing Spare. Nor during the Oprah interview - nor in their Netflix documentary . I think the $ just rolled up in their eyes like a cartoon character .

Edit - I haven't checked the date of the book but the rest stands for other members of the family ( and others )

The book was published in early Feb - or possibly late Jan. The Queen died in early September. Harry must have already have been working on it by then.

I agree

But the late Queen Elizabeth couldn’t have read it.

That was my point.

Edited

What I mean is that, at the time he wrote it, he didn't know QEII would be dead by the time it was published. Obviously books are written months/years in advance of publication. At the time of writing, he had enough malice and little regard for his grandmother's feelings to put it on paper, knowing she might read it.

Yes exactly. The book was already run the can in the Summer of 2022, iirc.
