Thinking long term about H and Me lives and their children's lives where is the funding going to come from and is there a serious risk of the funding drying up? I especially think of the children who I would expect would go to a private US school and ultimately will be US citizens perhaps pursuing US jobs. There is huge competition for celebrity status in the US and no nobility as such so how do they for in? Does the link to the RF quickly become an irrelevance ?

Many years ago DH and I were friends with a couple . The wife died very unexpectedly and the husband was distraught .
To cut a long story short , it turned out he had murdered her for financial reasons but had covered his tracks until her suspicious sister started asking questions.
We ( and others ) were absolutely stunned.

Charles either knew that Peter Ball was a paedophile - he remained good friends with him after he was cautioned for sexual assault on a boy. Or he is exceedingly stupid and believed lies Ball told him without asking his staff to check out the truth.
Given his previous history as a close friend of Jimmy Saville, you would think he would be more cautious.

Apparently H&M are holed up watching the fires. Wonder if it has just Dawned on them that wild fires are a risk in that part of the world? Not sure how floating about in luxury dresses in the Californian sunshine will come across now?

Don't be silly, of course they would know about the fire risk - there's a lot of public information about it, and there were fires in the area last March.

I've just been googling, and wildfires can move at speeds up to 15mph, depending on wind, terrain, and natural/manmade firebreaks. And they are c.60 miles from the fire. Taking out the hyperbolic language of being "holed up watching" then yes I agree it's very likely that they are paying close attention to the movement of the fires, where they would go if the have to evacuate, the state of local traffic, and what they most want to take with the if either an existing fire moves their way or a new one breaks out close by.

I can be critical of H & M but I hope that they (and as many Californian residents as possible) can stay in their home. @EdithWeston's description of what Californians have to think about when trying to decide whether or not to flee would be distressing for anyone (and of course those who have lost or already left their homes are already living in a nightmare).

I and M are hugging fire fighters and greeting local mayors. Is this what they want for themselves and their children; a little splinter of royalty for the Americans? I would have thought the average fire fighter would welcome a big from the state governor of President rather then a big from a royal family based half way round the globe?

This is what H has been brought up to do. To him this would be a natural move. I can genuinely believe this was what he was thinking of with the 50% in the RF. Invictus, Sentebale, military events, official events.

In someways this is also what appealed to M. It’s worthy, high profile, and it adds cachet. What she clearly did not want was the drudgery of most royal duties.

If they had just said we want to be part time working royals, only do the bits they fancy for most people that would be fine. The problem was they (M) wanted the prestige events and expected senior royals to defer and do all the drudgery.

The really problematic part was, and still is, the 50% out of the RF. Decades ago the Edinburgh’s showed it didn’t work if it is media based.

The Duke of Gloucester successfully managed it, being an architect. The difference is being an accountant, lawyer, architect etc. are, in media terms, low profile. Harry, Andrew and others made it work with military service.

It’s wanting to work in commercial media that’s the issue. Had M continued as an actress that might have worked. It’s the commercialisation of the Sussex brand that is the issue. The desire to be a celebrity and all that brings is just not comparable with royalty.

They're not doing it as royals though. They're doing it as famous LA citizens. Much like other actresses (Angelina Jolie for example) are doing.

I know several people who live around LA. They have all taken in people who have been evacuated. In one case two complete families into their modest house. I wonder if H&M have offered any practical help like that? The areas affected include those occupied by Hollywood people so there must be acquaintances involved.

I wish someone would ask them on camera who they have staying in their home and how many of their children’s toys they have given away .

They could have visited a centre somewhere quietly, donated money and been on their way had their need to help been that overwhelming.

Instead, they drive 2 hours with a film crew for a 17 minute visit in front of the media having issued statements from their titled office. Why? They aren't representing the Royal Family, they are private citizens.

Also as much as he would not want to admit it, I think Harry will really struggle with the disparity when George, Charlotte and Louis are teenagers and getting lots of public interest and press attention, and his kids are largely irrelevant- unless he and Meghan actively seek to make them celebrity children, which would be a total contradiction from his stated position thus far

They spent the morning doing it privately. The centres aren't near them, owing to them living an hour and a half away from the fires.

@IcedPurple they live in california, and Meghan is from LA. Meghan was a very famous actress before she married Harry. Harry is, of course, famous by virtue of his birth status
