The first part of the 'statement' is fine, nothing wrong with it.

However the 'Open your Home" to friends. family is another level of patronising, as if people need to be encouraged by the office of the Sussexs to give their family, friends and neighbours shelter.

Such unmitigated arrogance.

Why not a personal statement from Harry and Meghan, just more cynical PR for the Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Atlasvue · 09/01/2025 22:28

Additionally, in the lead up to the show, Meghan would probably have been posting stories every few days. That’s not going to happen now clearly.

Maybe something closer to Wednesday but nothing this weekend. I’m sure she had everything scheduled and lined up ready to release some joyful PR on her insta. She can’t even post much on the release, as she will look ridiculous.

So they have to keep her name in the papers for something. So it will now be connected with the fires. As I said in an earlier post, I’m fully expecting artfully shot pictures of care packages made by Meghan to appear at some point.

This is just PR

I thought describing the link to José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen as a longtime partner of Archewell is another demonstration of the differences between UK and US.

There's no way something just over 4 years old is longtime!

I disagree that there's nothing wrong with the first part of the 'statement'.

The whole idea of two minor celebrities issuing 'statements' from some pretend 'office' is pathetic and inappropriate. Their titles have absolutely no meaning in California. They don't hold any public office. Why couldn't she have issued a short 'thinking about all those affected' type message on her new Instagram, as other 'celebrities' have done? Why the sepia toned 'statement' from an 'office' which doesn't actually exist?

WinterCrow · 09/01/2025 22:33

Are they still standing with Ukraine? Even that piece of pompous twaddle didn't have the 'Office of ...' nonsense - although yet again it plugged Archewell, their money vehicle.

'Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law and encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same.' - Feb 2022

(There was more, but it looks like someone gave it a big trim.) Anyway, nice to know they're encouraging global leaders to do things. What would the global leaders do without the encouragement of Harry? Flounder about eating kit kats, I expect. This is Nobel Peace Prize-winning stuff.

Atlasvue · 09/01/2025 22:34

Well Meghan just to put out something…because there’s another Montecito lifestyle guru showing her up:

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop Kitchen among restaurants providing free meals to first responders in L.A.
From CNN's Elizabeth Wagmeister
A number of Los Angeles restaurants are offering free meals for first responders amid numerous devastating fires across the county.
Goop Kitchen, owned by actress and entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow, announced on Thursday that they would be delivering meals to first responders on the ground.
“Our hearts are with our Los Angeles community and everyone impacted by the devastating fires. To the first responders showing unimaginable bravery and resilience we’re endlessly grateful,” Goop and Goop Kitchen’s official Instagram account posted, calling for first responders “in need of food” to DM their team for assistance.
The company also provided a list of organizations for those looking to make donations to those impacted by the fires.

Are they still "speechless" about the evacuation from Afghanistan? To be fair, I am sure the world was waiting for their response to the crisis in Afghanistan at that point 😉.

I absolutely agree coming from the Office of the BlaBla, is beyond ridiculous, she now has an instagram account, she could have posted a message there.

The first part linking to organisations I think is fine, its practical information, but it then goes downhill from there.

Xag · 09/01/2025 22:40

That Goop statement is very well drafted

EleanorBettyJackie · 09/01/2025 22:50

Interesting contrast between Sussex and Goop. The former telling people what to do, the latter actually doing something.

In an interview ( The Cut ?) Meghan said she gave out backpacks to homeless people . Or rather a member of her staff did the actual handover !
So many she has a supply ready to dish out ?

Mylazycatspyjamas · 09/01/2025 23:02

That Gloop statement sounds genuinely heartfelt. It’s not some fake announcement from on High, it
has a completely different energy. Chalk and cheese. H and M sound like they are issuing an edict from their elevated and superior position , using their non existent Office. Do they think people are fools?

Atlasvue · 09/01/2025 23:04

LA Lakers game postponed (even though the venue is in a safe area) because it didn’t feel right to play in the circumstances they said.

Award show announcements have also been postponed for both the Academy Awards and the SAG Awards.
The nominations for the Academy Awards will now be announced on Jan. 19 instead of Jan. 17.

I’m sure Meghan would postpone if she could. She’s not been able to do all the PR she would have had planned and wouldn’t want her big moment overshadowed. Which it will be.

The fire story will still be big news through next week. Authorities are still a little worried about possible high winds on Mon/Tues.

The message didn't even send out any condolences or sympathies to the people affected. Just instructions from 'The Office'.

I've been married for well over 30 years and even then, nobody would draw attention to themselves at a wedding by announcing a pregnancy or getting engaged!

I agree, nothing to do with modern women at all - it's just common decency and good manners!

I'm not talking about women making an "announcement," I'm talking about women panicking at the thought of anyone discovering their pregnancy and talking about it in conversation!

I've seen women on here swapping tips about how to secretly siphon non-alcoholic wine or fizzy juice into their glasses because they are so terrified at the thought that someone might FIND OUT (shriek!). That is ridiculous, sorry. It's fine for family news (guests' pregnancies/house moves/job promotions/engagements) to come up in the conversation at weddings and it's not guests' responsibility to actively hide stuff like this.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 09/01/2025 20:42

Well, I'm sure they mean well, but do people really need to be instructed by those two in how to offer help to others? It’s pretty basic stuff, isn’t it? Donating to the Red Cross and checking on neighbours…that’s what people do in response to disasters.

Still, at least they managed to insert themselves into the middle of everything, splashing their titles as they did it.

They don't ! This makes them look like twats for issuing this.

Surely that's entirely different? These are women who don't want to reveal their pregnancy early which is entirely their right and an eminently sensible thing to do! Should they be unfortunate enough to have a miscarriage, as sadly many women do, they don't want to be faced with Norma in Accounts or Jenny down the road asking how their pregnancy is going!

They generally aren't doing it because they don't want to make an announcement at someone's significant celebration, but if they are, fair play to them, because it's not the time nor the place for such an announcement!

Sure they can come up in conversation if people already know!

The telegraph:

‘The Duke and Duchess have contributed clothing, children’s items, and other essential supplies to those affected by the fires, The Telegraph understands.
They have also opened their home in Montecito, California to friends and loved ones forced to evacuate.
The couple are working with staff from their Archewell Foundation to identify the most effective ways to support the community and donations have been made to the relief effort through the foundation.
They have also been in contact with chef José Andrés and are working alongside his World Central Kitchen organisation, which supplies meals to communities in the wake of natural disasters.
In the near future, as the recovery effort begins, the Archewell team plans to seek opportunities to volunteer where needed and specifically, will look to support mental health recovery.’

So it says they’ve opened their home to those affected…..doesn’t mean there are actually displaced people there though does it? The reaction to their statement obviously rattled them.

They are desperately trying to insert themselves into this disaster. Haven’t actually done much, there’s a lot of talking and thinking. Seeking out volunteering in the near future…but not now obviously, just thinking about it. And telling you they are thinking about it.

But they have donated clothes and made a donation….and told the Telegraph about it

So seems all stations go at the new disaster relief HQ in Montecito!

The information they released is being widely shared by nearly every US celebrity i follow on Instagram. It's coming from a central point because it's the same list in every post, just re formatted.

I'm not sure why the Sussexes are getting criticism for doing this. It's what American celebrities are doing and social media is a good way to spread information these days . In this sort of situation people are often encouraged to publicise sources of help.

Likewise I don't see anything wrong with opening your home to friends who have been displaced, it's what you do.

working alongside World Central Kitchen

I think this sums up my issue with their announcements (apart from the sheer pomposity of 'from the Office of' by private individuals 😂)

It's the implicit claim - in the language used - to be the equal of an established organisation with an impressive track record of supporting communities in need.

Working alongside? What are they bringing to the table? Their staff volunteering, and possibly a relatively small financial donation. That's not a partnership of equals, that's a fairly small contribution to a successful non-profit with clear aims and a strong track record.

Nothing wrong with that! But don't dress it up with language that tries to suggest this is a 'partnership ' of equals. You aren't 'working alongside ' your staff are 'working for'. You need their endorsement far more than they need yours.
