Harry not honouring Tyler Perry. Why?

Way back in July, it was announced that Harry and Meghan are tribute chairs for Tyler Perry and the award he will receive at the Paley honours Gala on December 4th. See

Now we are told, even though Tyler has helped his family over the years and is his daughter’s godfather, that Harry won’t be attending the gala even though he is on the hosting committee. Instead Meghan will be on her own? See

Why? It makes no sense. I understand that their work takes them different places but this is something they are both involved in. Harry is off to a book conference that just so happens to be on the 4th December, all the way in NY.

He was a chair of the committee and he doesn’t bother to show up? That’s really poor taste, for a man that has done so much for him.

It’s also just adding unnecessary fuel to fire that all is not well with their marriage. This is an event that they should be doing together, instead Meghan will be left to the red carpet on her own. If he didn’t want to be part of it, why did he join the hosting committee, if he never intended to host?

Well it will go on as long for as they continue to appear separately at events, even the ones that they were both scheduled to appear at and host.

It comes with the territory for royal couples I guess. I‘ve heard rumours about William and Kate living separate lives.

I certainly don't know all this stuff.
I do know that if an invitation comes in, I ask DH "Are we free that night?" or, if he's out looking at the chickens or the vegetable patch or something, I look at the calendar.
If it turned out we weren't free, I'd explain to the person sending the new invitation that we had a prior engagement.

People magazine enabled the comments sections around Oct 10th. Before that, you couldn’t comment on a Harry or Meghan story.

So the LA children’s event/red dress story had already passed by then. Then suddenly you can comment.

They use People as a trusted source to put out their PR. They are still using now knowing that the comments section is enabled.

Something happened around the beginning of October for this to happen. Maybe their new PR people think it’s a good move? I don’t see how though. Timing is odd though

Though of course if they hadn't banged on at length about how they'd married for lurve (as opposed to all the boring other royals) then there wouldn't be any reason to wonder why one has dipped out of what was originally billed as a joint event.

It's probably just bad planning (where's that freakish eye for detail when you need it) plus the faux pas of cancelling a commitment because something else has come up.

The NY Times event is highly respected. These are people who are talking about major issues affecting all of us today. Harry is a lightweight compared to the other speakers. He is no doubt trying to make both Archwell and BetterUp look better. So it makes sense that he will be out networking for his own concerns. BTW, Serena Williams will also be at the NY Times event.

I have no idea what that means. And I don't go looking for trash talk on someone's marriage.

It means this isn’t where the rumours originate and the internet is awash with them.

Even news articles are pointedly highlighting on a regular basis that their work life has ‘separated’ and they haven’t been pictured in months.

Therefore it doesn’t help, when you are due to host an event. Announced months prior, then just a few days before, state that you’ll be elsewhere. Leaving your wife to walk the red carpet alone.

It's quite bold to quit a line up including Ted Sarandos only days before your Netflix programme come out.

Invitations, acceptances and publishing details of hosts (not just attending, hosting) are usually sorted out months in advance. Someone really fucked up on this.

Did People spot it for themselves? They have two articles about the two engagements today. Isn't it one of the outlets that carries a lot of stories sourced to "friends" and therefore believed to be the current preferred recipient unattributed material?

When you think about, just from a security perspective, how much they have to arrange. Particularly when he goes to NY when they now have their security work with the police. It’s not possible to just forget. It’s not possible to organise at the last minute.

There’s too many people involved.

Harry has decided not to go to this event and I’ll go further, he purposely looked for an event on Dec 4th, so to avoid going.

Why?

-Because they are taking to extremes their separate work diaries? Even though this was a joint venture, he has sacrificed his friend night for his new solo PR campaign?
-Because there’s marriage issues and it’s difficult to present a happy front ?
-Because Harry dislikes Hollywood and has decided to turn his back?
-Because he was spooked by the reaction at the Pat Tillman awards?

Either way, it doesn’t look good on him. He was scheduled to appear and let his friend down.

I'd normally say the same, @MrsLeonFarrell, except that there seem to have been months between Harry being listed as a host for Tyler Perry and now deciding to go to New York instead

Rather than the endlessly rumoured marriage split it may be as simple as the NY event involving more A listers, and for all we know he might have spoken to Perry and been told that of course he mustn't miss it

Because I would have expected invitations to the headline participants to have gone out much earlier, and the line up confirmed weeks/month in advance.

The fuck up was firstly, accepting an event when already committed elsewhere (as a co host, not just attending), but the second and bigger one was not quietly sorting the clash out as soon as it became apparent. Rumours of brand separation began over a year ago, and its been spoken about more openly since about August (ie after Colombia). So that was the time to have dealt with this, including removing Harry's name from the Paley website, as part of all the other separate initiatives; rather than waiting until a few days beforehand and dragging it all back up again.

I don't think that there need be any ulterior motive - simply that Harry reneged on a prior commitment because something he thought better came up. I think that in itself is shoddy. But what I see as fuck up came about in the poor handling and timing of the attempt at deconfliction (which has yet to be fully achieved as Harry's name is still on the Paley event even now that People has highlighted to the world that he's not going).

At best, they've been unlucky.

Do they even have a PR adviser right now? I remember reading on at least two occasions that someone leaving a paid post is such a great friend that they'll continue to advise privately.

Well, it can’t be a very last min addition because of his security issues in NY which we all know about unfortunately. These things take time. I’m guessing weeks.

But Harry and his staff very much knew he was due to appear at the Paley Gala. It was announced months ago. There’s no clash unless you want there to be a clash. He has chosen to let down his friend and opt to go to this event. That just miraculously happens to be on the same night. Thus, continuing their new twin track but separate work spheres. What a coincidence.

There were two new PR execs added a six months ago- so correlates which the change in direction for the pair. One was just for the UK, Charlie Gipson and the new LA exec Kyle Boulia.

Maybe wants to have a go at Katzenberg to try to get Meghan some voice overs in some cartoons when he failed with Bob Iger? 😂
