Do you think as Camilla as the queen ?

Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

Only in the way that she is Charles' Queen to his King .

It wasn't quietly dropped. It was superseded by the late Queen's announcement, at her jubilee celebrations, that she wished Camilla to be Queen

Well, the statement of intention was on the Clarence House website until 2018, then it disappeared and 5 years later QEII made her announcement. That’s “quietly dropped” to me…

Oh I see. Well read something nefarious into that if you wish too. I read it just as it was old news and they knew by then that the made up position of Princess Consort was going to be superseded by the normal one of Queen Consort. A bit of PR but nothing particularly devious.

The Princess Consort nonsense was a continued sop to Diana fans that was rightly moved on from.

Serenster · 27/03/2025 19:53

Oh, I don’t think there’s anything nefarious in it! I agree with you that it was a sop to Diana’s fans, and that Charles was sensibly playing the long game until pubic opinion had moved on. I imagine QEII’s statement was also carefully planned out, along with admitting Camilla to the Order of the Garter.

My apologies. The phrase "quietly dropped" I usually only see used by people making claims about something that didn't actually happen and with the inference it was hiding something. I shouldn't have assumed.

I'm a Republican, so I couldn't care less what forelock tuggers call her.

Excuse me?

Was that really what you meant to respond with?

upinaballoon · 28/03/2025 07:43

Thank you to all of you who have pointed out that there was talk at one time that Camilla would be known as Princess. I felt that I could remember that and I did google a bit but hadn't time to really investigate that one.
I think that QE2 made her statement to make it clear that she hoped that Camilla would not be side-lined into being called a princess when Charles became king but would be properly called by the word 'queen'.

I'm American. I quite like her as well.

The reason that the late Queen issued that statement about Camilla being Queen Consort was that when she married Charles, there were statements made that the intention was that she would be known as Princess Consort when Charles acceded. I say "intention" because I have always assumed that, if public perceptions of Camilla changed, that intention would change, and she would be titled Queen. This makes sense because under British practice, she would be Queen anyway, no matter what she was called, in the same way she was Princess of Wales, but chose to go by Duchess of Cornwall.

The late Queen was clarifying that there would be no "Princess Consort" malarkey and that Camilla would be known as Queen in large part because that is what she would be. I think the late Queen also came to appreciate and value Camilla.

The late Queen made very complimentary noises about Camilla when it was Charles's 70th birthday - I think that was the occasion.

I like your words "'Princess Consort' malarkey". People don't say 'malarkey' much nowadays. The important thing about what the late Queen said was not the 'consort' bit, it was the 'queen rather than princess' bit.

I know some people feel very strongly about adultery but I never understand why the Camilla haters always seem to give Diana free pass for the same thing.

Er, because Diana was prettier than Camilla?

CurlewKate · 28/03/2025 12:02

I’m not a “Camilla hater”. And I certainly think Charles was more to blame for the adultery. I know Diana had affairs too-but she was young and extremely silly. Charles and Camilla should have known better. And the tampon talk was vile. “Press the tit”ffs…

Not much comfort to the wives of Will Carling and Oliver Hoare.

Yes but the whole point of this thread is asking whether "Is Camilla The Queen"?
The answer is yes she is.
She is Queen Camilla just as Alexandra, Mary, Elizabeth (aka the queen mother) were Queen Name before her.
They were/are also Queen Consort.

no, the point of the thread was asking if you think of Camilla as queen

LaMarschallin · 28/03/2025 12:48

CurlewKate

And the tampon talk was vile.

In what way?
I'm presuming you know the context and that it wasn't a case of Charles saying he wanted to be Camilla's tampon; quite the opposite.
I think most people's private pillow talk wouldn't stand up to scrutiny, even if it was just silly pet names for genitals or something.
Surely it's not the mention of Sanpro that's vile? I'd thought we got beyond all that coyness and some people being ashamed of it.

What's the difference?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 28/03/2025 12:55

@LaMarschallin Thank you!! It drives me mad when people misquote that.

LilacPeer · 28/03/2025 13:03

Needmorelego · 28/03/2025 12:52

What's the difference?

one is a fact, one is an opinion.

When I think of the queen, I don't think of Camilla.

I do however have the capacity to understand that she is in fact the queen.

wordler · 28/03/2025 13:10

Needmorelego · 28/03/2025 12:52

It’s when you see a newspaper headline now which says ‘The Queen says her favourite snack is rice cakes’ does your minds eye go to the late Queen eating rice cakes or Queen Camilla.

For a while I would picture the late Queen and it would be a weird jolt to see stories like ‘The Queen is in Poland’.

But now I tend to picture Camilla first. And I see William now when the Prince of Wales is mentioned. Took a couple of years though.

CurlewKate · 28/03/2025 13:24

@LaMarschallinSorry-if you think I’m talking out of coyness or shame then we have nothing to say to each other. You think what you think-and I’ll think what I think.

I think it's very unfair to refer to that so called "tampon" phone call. That was a private phone call between two people, who had every right and expectation of privacy.
Would you like intimate details of a private conversation repeated to everyone? I'm sure most people wouldn't. What a vile thing to do.

Fair enough.

I think perhaps you don't know or didn't remember exactly what was said and were going with the widely held belief that Charles said he wanted to be Camilla's tampon and now are using faux indignation to avoid answering why you think "the tampon talk was vile".

I didn't say you were talking out of coyness or shame: I said "Surely it's not the mention of Sanpro that's vile?"

Delphigirl · 28/03/2025 13:41

No I still think of her as a raddled old side-piece

It was a hacked conversation. I think it's terrible that people are repeating it again and again.

She was in her thirties when she was having affairs with married men !
and I’m assuming that since you think that harping on about a hacked private phone call ( constantly being miss quoted!) is acceptable, then you feel that all the other people who had their phones hacked are also expected to have their personal information used against them for the next 30 years!

DelectableMe · 28/03/2025 13:47

Excellent point, @jeffgoldblum . I thought Harry was opposed to hacking? He must really hate that one of Pa's old hacked phone calls is continuously being raked up to be used against him.
