Hear me out , I have no problem with Camilla and never thought I would never see her as ( way back when ) as Charles wife when they married , my opinion, was they married and can rightly call herself as Duchess.
However , what I don't understand that when Queen Elizabeth was alive , her husband , Prince Phillip was always known as just that and never seen / addressed as King . Why is Camilla our queen when Phillip was never our king ? I'm confused .

The Queen automatically summons the former queen in my mind.

I will get used to it eventually.

Ditto the other redistributed titles.

Same.

Maggieb90 · 27/03/2025 12:34

I always saw the Queen as someone regal. Not sure why, but see Charles and Camilla as a rich family, but not royal. I think reading Harry's book 'Spare' put me off Camilla. Maybe we just know too much about them -Charles' tampax telephone call for example - so there is no more mystery or respect any more...

The wife of a king is Queen Consort.

They have never been known that way, just queen whoever. As I said.

JewelleryCat · 27/03/2025 12:53

Even though I know Edward is Duke of Edinburgh, I still think of Prince Philip as DoE

I'm not sure what to tell you. The wife of a King is the Queen Consort. A Queen is someone born to the role. Look it up.

CandiedPrincess · 27/03/2025 13:08

I think of her as the queen, rather than The Queen if that makes sense? Makes sense to me 😁

I’m pretty sure she means no one calls them
“Queen Consort Camilla”.

I think of Camilla as Queen. I quite like her mind you. I’m Canadian so maybe that makes a difference.

Why be obtuse, you know what @Snugglemonkey is saying. Nobody says Queen Consort, even though it's factually correct. We don't say "Queen Consort Anne Boleyn". It's only with Queen Camilla that people want to shoehorn the Consort part in.

I'm a Republican, so I couldn't care less what forelock tuggers call her.

The technical differentiation is between:

Queen Regnant (i.e. “ruling” in Latin) - a Queen in her own right because of birth
Queen Consort - A Queen due to being the spouse of the King

Both are just referred to as “Queen [Name]” or “The Queen” though. Just for a Queen Regnant, there will no “King”.

Catsinaflat · 27/03/2025 13:17

Nope I have no interest in her or any of them really.

Serenster · 27/03/2025 13:19

Oh, and a Queen Regnant will also typically have a regnal number, if appropriate (So, Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II).

There’s been five Queen Catherines married to various Kings (Henry V, Henry VIII x 3, Charles II) but they don’t get differentiated like this.

Needmorelego · 27/03/2025 13:20

@username7891 yes but no one calls them "Queen Consort Name". The Queen Consorts of the 20th Century were Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother).
That's what they were known as.
"Queen Name".

Needmorelego · 27/03/2025 13:24

@username7891 look at this newspaper article.
Do you see the word "Consort" in there anywhere?

It's very simple:

Queen - born in the role
Queen Consort - married into the role

You seem obsessed, take a break.

Queen Regnant - born in the role
Queen Consort - married into the role

See what they both have in common?

Yes but the whole point of this thread is asking whether "Is Camilla The Queen"?
The answer is yes she is.
She is Queen Camilla just as Alexandra, Mary, Elizabeth (aka the queen mother) were Queen Name before her.
They were/are also Queen Consort.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 27/03/2025 14:18

It would perhaps be less confusing if the references were more accurately to "Queen regnant" and "Queen consort" (lower case). The designation is not normally part of the title, but is used as a descriptor to differentiate a queen in her own right from a queen by marriage, when and if the need to differentiate arises, which it actually doesn't very often.

I say "normally" because there are a couple of instances in British history where "Consort" was used as part of the title, and they both involved men. Victoria's consort was titled Prince Consort. Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary Queen of Scots, was called King Consort as a courtesy.

Charles asked for Camilla to be known as the Queen after the coronation. She's actually the Queen Consort because she doesn't have any power.

Once Charles dies, the next in line takes over, not her because she's the Queen Consort. The Queen passes the role on, the Queen Consort retires and becomes the Dowager.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/03/2025 14:25

Oh my god. <bangs head on table>

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 27/03/2025 14:28

When William takes over (because he is heir) Catherine, as his wife, will be Queen Consort. She will still be referred to as Queen, The Queen and Queen Catherine.

This is really basic stuff.

(WHY AM I STILL HERE??)

DappledThings · 27/03/2025 14:28

No he didn't. She was always going to known as the Queen because she is the Queen. No special treatment, nothing different to any other King's wife

Correct. Everyone knows this. It is irrelevant to your misapprehension that Camilla being called Queen Camilla or the Queen is unusual for a Queen Consort.

"Consort" was used for Camilla in the immediate aftermath of the late Queen's death to differentiate between her and Camilla. Gradually "consort" was dropped because it is not an official title. That began to happen prior to the coronation. I
