Meg’s era of joy

Showing up to support her very close friend who lost her child and also the children’s hospital at an evening gala. What a friend to have in the Duchess. Meghan was glowing, fresh faced, wore minimal makeup, was confidant and smiley. She was well spoken and supportive of the evening fund raiser when interviewed. Show Up, Do Good. Yes, she always does. Loved her look too.

I'm actually disgusted by the way 'philanthropy' is used. I think it's time to reconsider the definition of the word.

CesarSoubreyon · 08/10/2024 10:27

Her chin used to be softer which suited her very well I think. I've had a chin implant and it gave me the same pointed elongated chin that she now has, fillers just don't do that. The video with Tom Bradby from South Africa shows how small and soft her chin used to be.

Fozzleyplum · 08/10/2024 10:32

The "era" reference might be a nod, deliberate or otherwise, to Taylor Swift; she's done very well recently singing about her eras.
We could have the seal singing era, the finding freedom era - the possibilities are endless.

I'm the worst, miserable git of a cynic you could meet and I roll my eyes at these 'charity galas' etc. If the celebs just gave the price of their ticket plus the cost of their new designer gear and stayed at home how marvellous that would be.

Sorry. I know that's harsh.

When Sugars and SS ask on these threads 'Why do you hate Meghan?, I always think - well actually, I don't hate Meghan (I think she's horrible and ridiculous, yes) I just have no time for all those samey celebs doing this shallow stuff. And Meghan seems to live for it.

CoffeeCantata · 08/10/2024 11:02

As I said in a pp, it’s a lot of nonsense. You can’t declare a range of time that hasn’t even happened yet to be joyful. No one says stuff like that. It’s just meaningless Hollywood style claptrap.
I can’t understand why she comes out with things like this, she’s a grown woman in her forties surely she has an inner voice somewhere that can filter her words. Chapter of joy, era of joy I mean, really, I bet even the ss have never uttered such phrases in their real lives.

It must be the effect of being brought up and living in Hollywood. It's probably one of the reasons M didn't get on in the UK - we are much more cynical and more likely to scoff at this kind of whimsy and pretentiousness. I think rich Californians live in a weird bubble and they all prop up each other's egos by going along with this kind of nonsense - 'I'll believe your pretentious rubbish if you'll believe mine'.

Can you imagine David Mitchell or Ricky Gervais telling us they are in their Era of Joy? I'd pay good money to watch Meghan questioned by either of these!

I’ve been to a few charity dinners in my time - volunteered to work at a few as well to help out friends who work in the third sector. They have quite high overheads as you need a venue, catering, drinks, entertainment, decorations etc so the ticket prices often go to covering those costs (you can’t charge £1500 a head and serve Apprentice-task standard food 🤣). You also often want celebs to do an after dinner speech, and several of those don’t waive their fee to help the charity….

Anyway, what that generally means is that the charity aims to maximise its take on the night with raffles, auctions, donation envelopes etc which does drive up the money raised. Particularly if you have tables of alpha males a few glasses of wine down all wanting to win the week at Gordon Ramsay’s house in Rock (a random example!).

So generally they do raise more money than just soliciting donations - plus they are really good as profile-raisers among their fundraising target market.

JaneJeffer · 08/10/2024 11:33

Or was the end of the era when she got home and had supper in front of the television rather than at a table at the gala?

😂 I'm in my having a cup of coffee and reading Mumsnet era but I'm hoping my sorting out the house era will soon be upon me

Absolutely. I've been to quite a few of these occasions and have been staggered by how much money was raised by, particularly, the auctions.

It is really interesting to see the engagement on People Magazine instagram reels. Despite it being Meghan and Harrys' go to for publicity and for all their efforts at pushing themselves. they do not get near the level of engagement on the reels that others do.

Taylor Swift gets in the multiple millions, but others like the Clooneys, Demi Moore also get engagement in the millions. Even Taylor Swifts boyfriends mother gets more views than Harry,

I know our US posters regularly comment they are quite irrelevant in the US, I think People Mag bears that out.

I suspect she bought her place on the red carpet at the last minute - so 'pay to play' and this was her contribution/donation.

I dont think she was included as part of the original celebs invitation - and she didnt 'gate crash' - but there would be enough of a deal struck that her appearance would generate enough publicity for the charity.

Thedom · 08/10/2024 12:45

Its quite fascinating to see the numbers.

At least she’s already had the eras (I assume, I don’t follow her).

Well if Meghan thinks this is her era of joy good luck to her but I’m not sure I’d see it as joyful myself, lots of bad press and husband away for quite a stretch and getting better, though not more deserved, press, but hey ho.

Seal singing era 😁

Thedom · 08/10/2024 12:58

Sorry guys, I am spamming now. final one !! One of her Nigeria or Colombia reels did get over 2m, however considering the massive promotion and hype they tried to generate for those trips, its really not that impressive compared to others.

I can’t believe the newspapers and online haven’t picked up on this video. Half way down the article, there’s no audio.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-13932215/amp/meghan-markle-affectionate-display-bff-kelly-mckee-zajfen.html

She looks very tipsy, and she clearly shouts ‘whoa!’ to and regain her composure.

Someone upthread referred to Meghan as 'one of the most famous women in the world'. Really? I suspect outside of the English speaking world she's really not that well known at all. Why would she be? And even where she is well known, I imagine she's mostly relevant to older people. Even in Britain and certainly America, I suspect many young people haven't got a clue who she is, and that number will only increase.

My young adult kids could not care less about her or Harry. My son sometimes says to me it’s only you older ones who care no one else does 🫤 he might be right 😁

Twistybranch · 08/10/2024 13:26

Also Liz is late to the party. Very scathing article from a previous meghan superfan

I’m sorry to say, in that ill-fitting dress you didn’t look like a regal royal – you looked diminished. That’s when I realised that what you now represent is so small as well: Meghan has gone from Duchess to D-list.

I know I’m not alone in seeing Meghan now for the rather washed-up Hollywood celebrity she is. Dear God, even that bastion of uncritical, boring, American wholesomeness, InStyle magazine, just called Meghan a ‘jam entrepreneur’. Ouch! That’s gotta hurt

LIZ JONES: Why those red dress photos mean I no longer support Meghan

I tried, I really did. I'd invested so much in our relationship. Years! But, Meghan, the red dress you wore at a children's hospital gala this weekend finally made the scales fall from my eyes.

Yes, their only real claim to fame is being royal, and royals in general are not that interesting to the younger generation.

However, the working royals will always be famous, at least in Britain, because of their profile and role in the life of the nation. Harry and Meghan have barely been seen at royal events for 5 years, and as time goes on, and their royal connections fade, so will their fame. Neither has managed to create a celebrity persona other than 'used to be royal' and that's a depreciating currency.

Needanewname42 · 08/10/2024 13:58

Just watched the video clips rather than the photos.
You'd think MM and the lady in the white dress were a couple!
Or am I imagining things?

Twistybranch · 08/10/2024 14:02

She’s clearly leaning on Kelly for support. She seems very nervous and out of place.

Additionally, in the video with the three women. Meghan is clearly drunk. It’s actually really sad to watch.

Also her hair in the video with the three of them, has lost all the curls. I’m thinking this was later on. So maybe she did stay for a while….and had a few drinks. Maybe that’s also why she went home early.

MaturingCheeseball · 08/10/2024 14:42

Just looking at when Meghan last wore that red dress, she resembled Doria a lot. Now her face and even whole head shape seem very different.

I had to Google Lizzie Cundy, having not the foggiest who she is. 56!!!! I think I need serious intervention as I am certainly not red-carpet ready 😭

BunnyLake · 08/10/2024 14:47

I honestly don’t know why she puts herself through all of it. The trying to be relevant, the trying to be A list, the trying to be this, that and the other, the public scrutiny etc, for what exactly? She has money, she has a husband, she has children. For the love of god (and her own well-being) can she not just live a quiet, private life? If she needs the validation and adoration of people this badly she needs some therapy of her own.

Lizzie has been 56 for a long time!

I think that’s what Liz jones picked up on in her article.

She seems diminished, all that she was supposed to become…and now she’s like a washed up Hollywood celebrity. In the exact same position she would have been had she not become a royal.

BasiliskStare · 08/10/2024 15:00

@IcedPurple - a friend of my husbands from Washingtom said no-one cares about MM . My SIL is Japanese and she had no idea who MM was . So I think they have fame but it is not global
