Apologies if there is a thread about this.

I haven't watched Scoop, because Netflix won't work on my old TV box so I have no idea how this compares. I watched all 3 episodes and found it bizarre. I did like that it didn't include any royals outside the York family.

What struck me the most was how sheltered Andrew's team must have been to think him doing an interview was a good idea. I'm just a member of the public and I wouldn't have advised him to speak for himself going only by what I read about him before Epstein was even heard of. Why on earth would anyone advise him to do this? Why did they think it had gone well? And why has he not just retired out of the public view and accepted there is no way back.

The arrogance of some people is astounding. I don't even think it's a royal thing but more a monied sense of entitlement, although ironically he didn't seem to have much money.

Anyone else seen it?

Yes, wrong. Apologies to all.

I suspect he may not care about VG. He seems to be an odious man who only cares for himself.

They were happy to accept money and gifts from their fathers strange friends without asking questions, snd have dodgy people at their birthday parties. They really must be dumb as bricks or shockingly naive

And it is fact that Beatrice negotiated with the BBC Newsnight team with her father for the carcrash interview. She must have believed that him doing this meant he hadn't done anything wrong.

The Palace is crawling with advisers and Intelligence. I suspect the problem is that some of the people they are advising aren't very intelligent, yet think they are so don't want to listen to the advice of people they see as their inferiors. There's not a lot you can do if you advise but people ignore you. I suspect there is an element of deference amongst staff too so people who work for the RF will do as they say. Like Prince Andrews adviser for the interview.

^^ This

The RF have the best of Intel, security and advsiors. Lots of them from the top pick in the country. But if they don't want to listen to the advice, there's not much to be done.
Andrew would not. He always said he was only answerable to the Queen and would tell his advisors and security to fuck off. I don't suppose anyone pulled him up on anything, not even his ex wife or daughters.

WeAreNotCookingTheSpoon · 23/09/2024 07:16

I'm currently watching the netflix one, am amazed how much Rufus Sewell has been made to look like Andrew. DH walked in mid episode and thought it was Andrew!

CanelliniBeans · 23/09/2024 07:50

Interestingly I thought the Right Royal Scandal actually was kinder to Andrew than Scoop.
He was trying to pay off his ex wife's debts. However is alleged behaviour was and is disgusting and he should be apologising to his victims.

Cynic17 · 23/09/2024 11:35

I thought the "afterwards" stuff was interesting in this version.
We see Andrew as vulnerable, as his life literally shrinks before him & he's even asked by his own daughter to stand aside for her official wedding photo. Ouch! It is well-played by Sheen, not to make him an out and out baddy.
Even Emily Maitlis has some regrets, as she gets bored because the big names are too scared to be interviewed by her. Not to mention the encounter with the Princesses.
Nice to see a bit of nuance in a drama - on all sides.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 23/09/2024 11:37

I very much doubt if Andrew would have listened to anyone, including his father. I know someone who was Andrew’s senior in the Navy and he called him ‘An arrogant little sh1t’, who knew it all and expected everyone to kowtow to him.

I don't think he cared about her at all. What I find astounding is that no one told him to apologise, even only because it would look better.

There are certain people in this life who can't apologise, can't admit defeat, can't say they are actually wrong. He is one of those

I think this is true but I also think he may have taken the view that, why should he apologise when , in his mind, he has done nothing wrong.

It wouldn't have hurt though to have said how horrific what had happened to those girls and young women was and as far as I know he has never even really said that.

EasternStandard · 23/09/2024 15:52

We've watched the first episode and it's ok, I like Michael Sheen as an actor so I'll keep going

I didn't follow a lot of the scandal, and didn't watch the Maitlis interview so not much to compare to, more just whether it works as a show

Pormbk · 23/09/2024 17:02

Just whacked it on. Not sure about Wilson’s Maitlis accent!

I take it back. Wilson does an excellent job playing Matlis. The voice is jarring at first but I think it becomes far more natural.

God, I hate Andrew.

CathyorClaire · 23/09/2024 20:21

He was trying to pay off his ex wife's debts.

Reports have the sum as £15K.

Pocket change to any prince, let alone one who was trousering £££ in off-piste deals alongside the laughable trade envoy role.

Infuriating so many papers have been conveniently sealed until only future historians can see them 😡

Seasmoke · 23/09/2024 20:43

Aw poor love. How he suffered in order to pay those debts. Forced to go to sleazy parties and shag teenage girls.

I didn't watch the interview either. I don't like Michael Sheen as an actor but I thought he portrayed the bewildered entitlement of Andrew faced with a situation he couldn't Prince his way out of very well.

I've only seen clips as I can't get Netflix at the moment, but he looks amazingly like Andrew. It's weird because Rufus Sewell is a good looking man and Andrew isn't anymore. I suspect copious cheek padding!

I thought Gillian Andersen as Emily Maitlis in Scoop was uncannily like her, so much so I did a double take at times. I haven't had a chance to watch this royal scandal one but shall look forward to comparing

I’ve always quite fancied Rufus Sewell. There was cheek padding, I saw an 8nterview where this was mentioned. There is a totally naked shot of Rufus in this from behind which sadly has cooled my passion for him. I’m hoping maybe it was a body double and not actually Rufus!

WeAreNotCookingTheSpoon · 23/09/2024 21:29

I’ve just googled, he wore a prosthetic (saggy) large bum for the nude shot. Panic over.

I don't want to see any actor's naked bum. Icky.
