Apologies if there is a thread about this.

I haven't watched Scoop, because Netflix won't work on my old TV box so I have no idea how this compares. I watched all 3 episodes and found it bizarre. I did like that it didn't include any royals outside the York family.

What struck me the most was how sheltered Andrew's team must have been to think him doing an interview was a good idea. I'm just a member of the public and I wouldn't have advised him to speak for himself going only by what I read about him before Epstein was even heard of. Why on earth would anyone advise him to do this? Why did they think it had gone well? And why has he not just retired out of the public view and accepted there is no way back.

The arrogance of some people is astounding. I don't even think it's a royal thing but more a monied sense of entitlement, although ironically he didn't seem to have much money.

Anyone else seen it?

My thoughts are that Charles started the Princes trust when he was in his twenties, it was his baby and it was proven as a great initiative after many years. William is in his forties and I just don't see his equivalent. As for the Duchy, William straight away appointed a CEO and two of his closest friends as senior people to be instrumental in running it

I haven't watched the programme yet (ITV), but William has just launched an initiative to end homelessness. It's a big goal, but even if he reduces homelessness, without actually ending it completely, it'll be a very worthwhile cause.

Also Earthshot.

Don't forget he's bringing peace to the Middle East too 🤔

Watching this now and it is hideous that Andrew has gotten away with it. The way he was shielded whilst that poor girl was completely destroyed. I loved HM but my goodness this is making me change my tune.

Wouldn't you support your own beloved son if he swore blind that he wasn't guilty, and you had scant evidence to suggest that he was? What a dilemma for any mother, but how embarrassing for a woman who had dedicated her life to serving and keeping her nose clean? Isn't it a natural instinct to protect your child?

The ramifications were huge and it must have pained to Queen to remove the roles and privileges that Andrew held, but she did it. I think she was pretty resolute for a woman in her twilight years with diminishing health?

I'm also not sure that the "poor girl" was "completely destroyed" - maybe at the time, yes, but she proved to be quite the shrewd operator. She retracted her statement against another man she accused and said she must have been mistaken. Credibility shot surely? Plus she has made herself a fortune out of it. Yes, what happened to her as a young woman is horrendous, but I don't think Ms Guiffre is squeaky clean either.

Interesting how the rest of the Royal Family considered there to be enough evidence and begged HM to distance herself. The Queen might have removed Andrew’s roles but be continued to live in immense privilege (at the taxpayer’s expense). In fact, KC has only just announced his public funding will end.

Ms Guiffre was a child, Andrew an adult. Surely the fact she admitted making a mistake demonstrates her honesty and believability? The rich shouldn’t be above accountability.

As I understand it, Ms Guiffre used part of the money to set up a charity to support other victims which doesn’t sound like the doings of a shady character to me.

probably advised to do this token gesture

People keep saying this, but I have never seen a quote of William himself saying this. Can you?

KnickerlessParsons · 02/11/2024 09:38

That was a joke

The last published accounts from Earthshot showed it spending £7m to hand out £5m in prizes which doesn't seem particularly worthwhile to me.

Next accounts are due at the end of this year. I hope it all looks a bit more worthwhile then.

Do you have any evidence that the figures involved were ‘token’? I expect she was advised the entire way through - and why shouldn’t she have accepted guidance when facing the extreme might of the British monarchy (who only ever act on advice).

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/11/2024 19:21

@PodgePie no but she used part of the money so i am assuming

I don't think the RF begged HM to distance herself because they necessarily believed he was guilty. I imagine they did it (if they did) because of the damage he was causing to the monarchy.

It was a pretty major "mistake" to make, and she was an adult when she made it too. I imagine she was in a position where she had no choice but to admit it.
