She has released a video to state that she has completed her cancer treatment.

It made me feel a bit sad and uneasy. A PP referred to “memory box” and I think I agree - even though she didn’t look frail and sick in the film. It just felt a bit mournful to me but others on here have said the opposite - “uplifting”.

I would have favouured a video/written statement I think, but I’m maybe not moving with the times. I’m also mindful that statements haven’t worked out that well in the past so she maybe wanted to try something else.

Im not a royalist but I am genuinely glad her chemo has finished and that she’s looking stronger. Fingers crossed.

Yes, I really hope she is completely recovered and continues to enjoy good health.

I suppose this advert isn't really about her, is it. It's palace messaging, probably with good intentions, aware of how many people will also be facing similar issues, trying to put a positive spin on it.

Poor woman, I can't imagine anything worse than having to make your recent ordeal look uplifting and affirming for the nation.

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2024 21:33

@Purrcats

but sounds wrong to my ears when you put the William in front of that. Might be how my brain is hearing it!

The explanations you've been given seem quite clear and correct to me.
Afraid that, in this case, your ears and brain are wrong.

I suspect it stems back to people imitating the late queen saying "My husband and I" at the beginning of a sentence; for example "My husband and I were very grateful for your good wishes".
The idea that saying "So and so and I" was more "posh" than "So and so and me" became prevalent and it got parroted by people who didn't understand the correct use of "I" and "me".

Scorchio84 · 09/09/2024 21:35

I saw the video earlier, it's pretty much everywhere & I thought it was nice, I also very much think it was a direct response to all of the nasty, frenzied responses to her initial admission of being under care for cancer treatment & the conspiracy theories that were all over SM for the past few months

Like pps have said she can't win so I think this clip is a good way of dealing with all the rumours & it send an uplifting message

Good luck to all who are going through this awful journey x

Purrcats · 09/09/2024 21:18

It makes sense if she said “This time has reminded me” but sounds wrong to my ears when you put the William in front of that. Might be how my brain is hearing it!

Appreciate hearing others thoughts on that sentence, gives one something to think about. 🙂

It is not actually other people's thoughts though - it is how grammar works!

DillDanding · 09/09/2024 21:46

I really don’t give a shiney shite about Kate, William, nor any of the RF. But the people on here without a most rudimentary grasp of grammar basics who don’t even know when it’s correct to use ‘me’ or ‘I’ are making me have a conniption.

FavouritePhoto · 09/09/2024 21:47

I do agree that it seems overproduced, OTT and all the similar stuff people have mentioned.

However, I think after facing cancer and potential death in your early/mid 40s, with 3 young children, we can let someone off making a video that seems 'OTT'. I do wonder if some people would be as kind about the video if it was anyone else who had made it though.

Whoever you are, knowing you might die at such a young age must be fucking terrifying and I'm sure it must make you genuinely reflect and get a bit 'OTT'. If this video is the result of how she's feeling, why not?

FavouritePhoto · 09/09/2024 21:53

I do think the people who think this is a genuine look at behind the scenes are a bit mad though. This will all have been carefully planned, thought out and shot. They would be crazy to let the public into their real lives especially after everything, but a look into their real lives will never happen. Nor should it really. They have a role to do, their private lives are nothing to do with us providing they're not doing anything terrible. They're acting in the video knowing they're being filmed just like we'd all do if we chose to put out a video to the world in their positions.

That’s because you are used to hearing people say it the wrong way.

I loved the video.

A really lovely uplifting video. Lovely to see how comfortable and loving as a family they are.

I was trying to work out what card game they were playing with Catherine’s parents.

The only thing that made my eye twitch was her saying “William and me” and not “William
and I” but that’s probably just me.

Hope that she continues to go from strength to strength and is able to make more precious lovely memories with her family.

The "William and me" is grammatically correct within that particular phrase.

Yeah, I am bemused by the people saying things like "this is what they are like in private"

Errr.. they have several cameramen filming, making suggestions, retake 'can you just look up adoringly again, great!', nanny in the background to entertain the kids, a stylist to readjust Kate's hair.

Their normal family life this is not

It's grammatically correct in that sentence because she's talking about something that "reminds William and me" you can't say it reminds I so here it is correct to use me.

Loads of people get it wrong. If you take out the other person you can tell which is correct to use.

So, "my sister and I went shopping" because you can't say "me went shopping". "it reminded me and my sister of our mother" because you can't say "it reminded I".

LaMarschallin · 09/09/2024 22:36

OrangeBlossomsinthesun

Despite explanations such as yours, the phrase unfortunately still, apparently, "sounded wrong to my ears".
However, purrcats accepts it "Might be how my brain is hearing it!".
Yes. It might be.

Er, except for the interactions involving the children.

It is so wonderful that she has finished her treatment. It is a great video.
Anyone who has lived through the terrifying journey that is cancer will empathise completely with her.
I really don't get some posters who are critical. One in two of us will have cancer. I wonder when those of you mocking the video, will hear the cancer diagnosis and think back and wish you had applauded her words.

Totally agree. Some people cannot empathise with others, until they go through a health scare themselves.
To be so judgemental of anyone, princess or pauper, who has gone through such a worrying time, especially if they a young family is beyond the pale.
Like so many people reading this discussion, I have had cancer, and while nobody can take their continued health for granted, to be given more extra time, is a gift beyond measure.
Good luck to everyone out there, going through your own journey.
Those who said or implied her message was patronising, take a good long, cold look at yourselves.

Spectre8 · 09/09/2024 23:34

It's good to hear her doing well, it's cleary been a rough journey.

I just personally don't like those types of videos always find them a bit 'look at me' and cringey amongst other things but I won't list it all here. It's fine if people love to make those type of videos, after all they are doing it for themselves to tell their story in a way they want to. It's just not something I like. I don't see anything wrong in saying so, lots of people will love that style and others won't 💁‍♀️

We DO know that 🙄🙄🙄🥱

As you said like we would all do! We wouldn't film ourselves taking a shit or washing the floor. FGS! 🙄

Not the way some people are talking. 🤡

We wouldn't stand up against a tree looking wistful and pretending it was just naturally caught by someone filming either. There's nothing natural about the video and some people are saying it is. 🤡

OrangeBlossomsinthesun thank you for explaining it like that, as that makes it a lot clearer in understanding why “and me” was used instead of “and I”. You learn something new every day. 😁

Andylion I think you’ve hit the nail on the head in saying that I am probably used to people saying it incorrectly. At least now those of us (seems to be just me here based on the number of feathers I appear to have ruffled on this thread) who have heard it incorrectly, now know the correct way of using that phrase.
