That is not true. Someone posted above about the Queen Mother being horrified because Tony Blair wore the "wrong" trousers. That is incredibly rude of her.

Well I doubt she told him to his face and she was of a generation and certain upbringing that would have been aware of sartorial faux pas. Equally she could have been horrified because he wore trousers that were unsuitable for whatever activity they were doing. I think you are reading too
much in to it. Especially as we don’t really know if she was actually horrified or it’s journalistic license again

Mylovelygreendress · 26/08/2024 15:59

Allegedly horrified . Did she tell him that ?

Nadeed · 26/08/2024 16:02

@Mylovelygreendress I have no idea. Someone else posted about it.

Trousers are suitable for any activity. Tony Blair will not have been wearing anything outlandish like three feet wide flairs, just ordinary trousers. It is rude to assume that what you think is the "correct" trousers will be agreed by others and followed.
Margaret Thatcher hated going to Balmoral because they put her down in small classist ways. Her Private Secretary confirmed this.

Why do they insist on calling her Kate Middleton still? She’s not used that name for 13 years!

Because that is her name. As she's a 'commoner' who married into the family, she didn't get PW's surname, so she can be referred to by her maiden surname or her Title. She's only called Catherine in conjuction with the titles she has by those outside of the RF (I know PW calls her Catherine). She was born 'Kate' I believe.

...The RF and the way they work are weird....

The poster said the QM was apparently horrified . You have stated she was horrified . You don’t know, i don’t know.
If you receive a wedding invitation with a colour theme do you think that is incredibly rude ? Or an invitation to a Ball with dress code ?
You wouldn’t be grateful for a hint about what to wear ?

She was born Catherine Elizabeth .

Would you wear smart suit style trousers for a walk in the bracing Scottish countryside or clambering over rocky areas? There are definitely trousers that are suitable for some activities and not others

CormorantStrikesBack · 26/08/2024 16:13

I think Catherine’s surname would either be Cambridge or Wales now? When William and Harry were at school their surname was Wales. But I agree it’s odd that they seem to change surname so much.

Apparently Blair wore “London lawyer” trousers whatever they might be. Bu5 I agree i5 could all be media bollocks as I doubt the QM was as indiscreet to tell this to someone outside the RF. Maybe the servants heard the QM sniggering about it with Andrew!? 😁

Kate is usually (not always I know) a diminutive of Catherine. As in this case. Her actual name is Catherine….

That is up to the wearer. I do not have much money so I would not want to ruin smart trousers. But if you are going for a walk it does not really matter what trousers you wear. Unless you are going to walm 15-20 miles or climb mountains of course.

Nadeed · 26/08/2024 16:16

@CormorantStrikesBack why do you think the Queen Mother would not say to Tony Blair he thought his trousers were unsuitable? It is exactly the kind of thing she would say.

I believe they would have gone for long walks in the highlands. Where it can be chilly, and there are rocks to climb. It’s not just a case of ruining smart trousers, it’s that they are not appropriate or suitable for that kind of activity. I’m pretty sure Tony Blair could afford several pairs of trousers

Did you know her ?

CurlewKate · 26/08/2024 16:20

"Poor Kate probably fancied a lie in with a bacon butty and massive mug of coffee, but instead had to have hair/make up done and get all dolled up for church."

She can do that the other 6 days of the week!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 26/08/2024 16:22

Oh give over @Nadeed
ive a dog. I have dog walking gear that wouldn’t see the light of day unless I’m walking the dog. I certainly wouldn’t wear my best trousers. I’d be a fool if I did.

I assume highland gear is probably similar analogy. And god me and my dog walking mates would no doubt judge someone in the woods in their Sunday best.

CurlewKate · 26/08/2024 16:23

I would be amazed if Fettes and Oxford educated Blair did not know what was appropriate to wear for a country house weekend!

Nadeed · 26/08/2024 16:24

@smilesy It is not chilly once you start walking at all fast. If Blair gets chilly that is his issue. He is an adult so up to him. I have been walks in the Scottish Highlands up to 20 miles and never scrambled over rocks. That would be an unusual walk.
I have always found that I need to under dress and feel a bit cold before I start walking, or I am soon shedding clothes.

I do wonder how much information Prime Ministers do get before their first visit to Balmoral. Because Thatcher turned up for the weekend having only brough heeled shoes. I think it is very unlikely that two Prime Ministers were told they would be walking in the Scottish Highlands and chose not to bring suitable walking gear. It is more likely the Royals assumed they should know this would happen without anyone actually communicating it.

Sorry, ignorant of Tony Blair to not know or ignorant of the RF /someone to not tell him? Apparently the Queen Mother was “horrified” by Blair’s trousers. He can’t have been too bothered as he managed to get Cherie knocked up that weekend! 😁

Eh? What's the link between his attire and his wife getting pregnant? I don't understand.

I'm hearing that in Wallace's voice:
"Gromit! He's in the Wrong Trousers!"

Have you walked over grouse moors ? I live not too far away and can assure you that walking over grouse moors is challenging.

Or maybe they thought that the PM of the UK would have the nous to check what they would be doing with the Palace before they went to Balmoral, so they were prepared. It works both ways 🤷‍♀️

DelectableMe · 26/08/2024 16:36

The RF famously never draw attention to any kind of social faux pas. That would be very rude, especially with guests.

Not saying there’s a direct link, just that he didn’t exactly spend the weekend crying into his scotch over wearing the wrong trousers. Or maybe he did and Cherie just tried to cheer him up! 😁
