Isn't the issue that (a) it was a whole-class project, and (b) Proctor and Gamble didn't change the commercial in response to her letter anyway, but rather to more generalised feedback, and (c) there's a query about what age she was and what school she was in (mixed or single-sex)? and (d) no-one gives a fuck

Twistybranch · 19/08/2024 15:20

You just know the dish soap story was on her college application too

Oh god. It would be!
On her "resume" as well 🙄

She does like the story.

Well, she was on the news at the time talking about it. I don't think it's a lie.

Unless she was pushed forward by her mother or something who actually wrote in etc.

As I understand it, it was a whole class project to write in, not Meghan on her own. The TV segment - the original was on Nikolodean, not "the news" - makes that clear. it was a social studies assignment, not Meghan acting off her own bat. She's even sat there with her schoolmates. So, the kids wrote in and heard nothing back from P&G. To empower his daughter, Thomas Markle subsequently used his industry connections to engage the Nikolodean film crew to come to the school (he was well connected to her school, helped doing lighting for school plays) and she was the child highlighted in the piece, which included her-enacting writing her letter to P&G. Meghan had been one of many thousands of females who had written to P&G. Nobody knows if P&G even read Meghan's letter. Her father made her think she had made the difference. When Vanity Fair was doing research for the Wild About Harry piece, they could not verify that her letter had made one jot of impact or difference to them changing their commercial. It's all set out in Tom Bower's Revenge (and has never been countered).

I wouldn't say she's fluent in Spanish, and she still has a strong American accent. Knows enough to hold a basic conversation, but that's about it.

Decent beginner level. Which tracks with having learnt it during her few months spent in Argentina.

Edit to say: she's not kept it up
And I say this as someone at about her level in Spanish too.

Edited

Oh dear, for some reason that really made me cringe. I could not listen to it all, but noticed she stuck to really safe territory, vocab-wise, yet still made a few basic-basic grammar mistakes such as using estar where she should use ser.

Unlike you, Mrs F, I thought her accent was actually quite good, even pleasing - being an actress must help with this kind of thing.

But her level is somewhere around B1 from the CEFR framework, I'm guessing, from the little I was able to listen to.

Did she not take the opportunity to brush up before her trip? I like to do this whenever I have the time. It's so easy and convenient these days with Preply for instance, you schedule your own private zoom lessons with a personal tutor.

This is not an advert by the way! Other language tutoring services are available 😅

Thanks for all the detail about the dish soap.
More deceit.

I wonder if the stuff about not expecting her children to be silent is another dig at the Waleses. I am always impressed by the way all three of them stop chatting and lower their heads respectfully when required to - yes even Louis! - I think it might be trooping of the colour 2/3 years ago I am particularly thinking of.

The Sussex children are going to be delightful...

AutumnCrow · 19/08/2024 15:56

'Duchess Meghan ... [blah blah]'

I've had a bit of a scary cringe at the use of 'Duchess' since I read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a girl - the one with the original creepy illustrations by John Tenniel (1865) thought to be based on a much earlier painting by Quentin Matsys, 'The Ugly Duchess'.

The descriptions and images of 'the Duchess' scared the hell out of me: 'Alice did not much like keeping so close to her: first, because the Duchess was very ugly; and secondly, because she was exactly the right height to rest her chin upon Alice’s shoulder, and it was an uncomfortably sharp chin.'

IIRC, 'the Duchess' had an intriguing relationship with 'the Queen of Hearts'.

Who has read the transcript of the rest of her speech - very very long, delivered in English after the shaky Spanish opening.

Is it me, or has she taken her mumbo-jumbo to new heights?

Hate hugging especially when done by someone holding power, it removes the subordinate’s ability to set their own boundaries. There is a photo of Harry sat with his arm across the back of his translators chair. Forcing the woman to sit forward as she has no choice. His comfort is more important than hers but he would be offended if this was done to Meghan

Came across a short clip that included Harry doing his swoop hug/air kiss to a Muslim woman. In the clip she is taken aback and steps back and leans away but he does it anyway. Massively inappropriate. How does he not know he shouldn't be hugging/kissing Muslim women?

Sorry not a great picture as it's a screenshot from the brief clip.

I remember that one, @ShamedBySiri . You'd think he'd bother to inform himself about cultural differences. Obviously not.

You'd think the advisers would tip them off about etiquette. Oh wait, that would be the "men in grey" wouldn't it.

Yes, and it's back to his arrogance and refusal to take advice.

Hugging a Muslim lady without permission is not just trampling on her personal boundaries, but also exposing her to possible trouble from the males in her life if she's in a very traditional/strictly adherent marriage. What are fucking dick move to make the Prince, formerly knows as racist, make himself look good for the cameras.

You are absolutely right. I would also add hugging someone you have literally just met and are meeting in a professional, not social, situation is inappropriate.

The Squaddies took great delight in berating Kate for just holding out her hand to a Muslim man. Imagine if William had hugged a Muslim woman the way Harry did there...... But because it's Harry it just shows how warm and friendly and charismatic he isn't

OlympicWomen · 19/08/2024 17:51

Oh my god, @Gorgonemilezola - can you imagine if Charles or William had hugged a Muslim woman?!
We'd never hear the end of it!
