When a friend of mine had a break from chemo he went to a football match. It took his mind off his cancer and gave him a much-needed afternoon out. No-one suggested he should have gone to work instead, in fact his boss went to the match with him. No-one for a moment made sarky comments about how "fortunate" he was to be able to go to the match.

How petty and nasty do you have to be to object to a sick person having an afternoon at a sports match?

because it might have been a random crap journalist that made the comment, but an editor approved it and a national media outlet published it, and that illustrates an attitude that cannot be accepted any more.
