bully for her - two days work in the last 6 months? Most people in her condition have to work constantly.

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:28

@thebluebeyond I know people who have been signed off sick whilst undergoing chemo

ShikShakShok · 13/07/2024 10:28

I know I’m going to get slated but not sure how I feel about that. I fully understand (and know from first hand experience) that you have good days and bad days with cancer. But surely if she’s willing to make a public appearance it should be for one of her causes rather than a Wimbledon game. Especially as a Wimbledon game lasts a couple of hours which can be exhausting to sit through if you’re already not feeling 100%.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 13/07/2024 10:29

@thebluebeyond i mean I don’t know you and your social circle but everyone I know who have had cancer and required surgery or chemo have been signed off work for at least a year and have a phased return to work…

well, you can't live on ESA. It takes months to be processed, and when it arrives, it doesn't really even cover the cost of transport to hospital. So you have to earn something, even if you can't go into your normal place of work because you are immunocompromised

Hasbean2 · 13/07/2024 10:32

This feels like a poor choice for her first engagement in a while
The last appearance made sense as a big family thing etc but this wouldn't be my first choice of an event to be back for.

I presume she will just present the trophy or something and won't sit for hours

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 13/07/2024 10:32

I had chemo for 6 months, 6 rounds and worked through 3 of them. I think if she feels up to it she should go.

Cascais · 13/07/2024 10:32

She is Patron of the All England tennis club - it is one of her causes

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:33

I thought she was linked to Wimbledon, that’s why she has presented prizes before

CelesteCunningham · 13/07/2024 10:33

Christ. I'm all for getting rid of the royals, fire them into the sun as far as I'm concerned. But maybe the fact that she's getting the sort of support that everyone should get while having cancer treatment isn't the point to argue.

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 10:34

I have nothing against the princess of Wales, but I hope to God we don't get a repeat of the whole labelling of all other cancer victims as "lesser mortals".

Not that it was her fault, but it has left lingering hurt and anger in the community.

I made a formal complaint to the press watch dog, who agreed the comments were highly offensive, but said that it wasn't against the law to make offensive comments, so they couldn't act themselves.

They hoped that the media that idiot journalist was working for would act, but I don't think they did

She is a young mother who has cancer and is having chemo. I really can't understand the catty, really nasty comments about her. How unkind some posters are towards someone with cancer. I feel huge sympathy towards anyone in her position. Charitably, I hope that when some of these posters have a brush with cancer (1 in 2 people will get cancer at some point) people don't say publicly that you are lazy that you should be at work.

Where have cancer suffers been labelled as lesser mortals?

Do you know she is going to sit through it all or are you guessing?

MissTrip82 · 13/07/2024 10:39

I'm a republican, I've only ever worked full time (and never as few as 40 hours), I do 12 hours at a time resuscitating people including children, I work weekends/nights/public holidays, I've supported myself since the age of 17 (I'm now 45) and I think.....good luck to her. I'm glad she's feeling well enough to attend. I hope she has a great time.

Can't imagine thinking otherwise.

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:39

Surely instead of bitching at the Princess of Wales people should be campaigning for better sick pay, so can raise the bar for everyone not lower it for her and other people who can afford to be off work whilst undergoing treatment

The last appearance was not a big family thing etc - it was a State Occasion. But anyway, are you saying she shouldn’t attend an event she is likely to enjoy? She is a big tennis fan as well as her involvement in the LTA. Is she only allowed to attend “worthy” events as she convalesces?

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 13/07/2024 10:40

I'm glad she's feeling well enough to do this now. Hopefully this means she'll be back to her normal duties. Otherwise, I agree it doesn't look good - it looks like she's just choosing to do the things she enjoys best. Either she is well enough to be out and about, or she's not - she can't just choose her favourite engagements!

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:40

@TinklySnail a journalist used that phrase in an article after PoW attended Trooping the Colour.

Nellieinthebarn · 13/07/2024 10:41

FFS give the girl a break. I wish that everyone could have first class care, I wish that everyone could go sick on full pay when they need it, I wish that everyone could have nice day out when they've been unwell. Its not the PoW fault that this is not the way our world is organised, and I don't blame her for taking advantage of the opportunity to watch a bit of tennis if she feels up to it.

I am not saying she is lazy and should be at work. I am saying she is immensely privileged, and the anger and distress stirred up by the praise she gets for sticking her big toe out the door, and the derision poured on other cancer suffers has turned many many mild neutral people into ardent republicans.

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:45

Bearing in mind she had major abdominal surgery too, which I assumed if a non Royal had had similar they would have been signed off work for a number of weeks and then they started chemo

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 10:46

@thebluebeyond you are blaming her for what others are saying/reporting about her

Oof, what an awful thing to say. I hope the journalist apologised for being so ignorant.
