I think the fact it’s an outdoor event will be a part of the reason she’s going - much safer than being in a small room with people potentially passing on bugs and colds.

Also Wimbledon has security protocols all in place for player and VIP safety already, easy access and the likes. A last minute decision to go won’t make an impact on anyone else. Kate has presented the trophies before so no need for practise runs or anything like that.

Deciding last minute to go, or not go, to a small event hosted by a group would be asking people to put in a lot of work with no guarantee she’d be up to it on the day.

Good points.

The logistics of her attending Wimbledon are pretty straightforward. Same with Trooping. The event would go ahead as planned with or without her. The Duchess of Gloucester will be on stand by to present the trophies just in case she has to drop out, but other than that Kate's appearance, or otherwise, will not really affect anyone or cause any security upheavals. Whereas if she had to cancel a visit to a small charity it would impact a lot of people and cause a lot of disappointment and disruption.

I think the Women’s Final would be better optics.

@thebluebeyond sounds like you have problem with the UK media rather than the UK royal family. It's the media who control the narrative

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 11:06

Pull it up again? you do realise that for many people the hurt and anger is on going and has not gone anywhere? This has turned people against having a royal family like nothing I have ever seen in my life, and it isn't going away any time soon.

I am glad you think the distress caused to so many people is amusing to you. Go ahead, laugh all you like, it says nothing at all about the people you are laughing at, and a lot about you

Edited

Seriously? A journalist hardly anyone respects writes something stupid and the result for you is weeks of anger and hatred for the person they wrote it about? And turning against an entire family?

You don’t see that as extreme?

I don’t think these are real people you are referencing, by the way. So can understand why someone would find your comments amusing.

AliceOlive · 13/07/2024 12:09

but why is her sitting at a tennis match worthy of a thread? it isn't.

Interesting way you’ve chosen to spend your time, participating in a conversation you believe should not even exist, along with us.

bully for her - two days work in the last 6 months? Most people in her condition have to work constantly.

I sincerely hope you never have to go through chemo . It’s brutal . Had I not been retired I would have been signed off for about a year .

Overtheatlantic · 13/07/2024 12:11

Ugh she’s not a young mother. She’s a 40 year old with three children. And massive amounts of money and help. She was always going to Wimbledon because she loves it, and why not? I don’t begrudge her a nice day out but I won’t infantilise her either.

Yirk · 13/07/2024 12:12

Excellent news, I hope this is a sign of further improvement of her condition.

I am not saying she is lazy and should be at work. I am saying she is immensely privileged, and the anger and distress stirred up by the praise she gets for sticking her big toe out the door, and the derision poured on other cancer suffers has turned many many mild neutral people into ardent republicans.

And how exactly does the Princess of Wales control that narrative? Do share . . .

Noosnom · 13/07/2024 12:18

theblue the person using the phrase 'lesser mortals' was a scummy 'journalist' doing it for ad revenue clicks. Nothing to do with the Royal Family.

Mytattooisbiggerthanyours · 13/07/2024 12:05

I think the Women’s Final would be better optics.

The men’s final is (rightly or wrongly) the main event so I am sure that the All England Club would prefer she attend if it has to be one or the other. That is the one that pulls in the large audience. So probably not entirely her choice

GreenClock · 13/07/2024 12:21

I’m a republican but I don’t think it’s fair to criticise K for poor sick leave policies/the NHS. That’s a matter for MPs and their equivalents in Scotland, Wales and NI. And company CEOs etc.

I don’t think that this decision - Wimbledon rather than ribbon cutting for the second public appearance - is a PR triumph tbh but that’s KP’s problem not mine.

But I can see that with this engagement she won’t have to deal with wellmeaning but intrusive questions about her health from the sort of harmless folks who turn up to look at the royals.

Good point from a PP about the football possibly knocking her off Monday’s front pages, hence the choice to attend on Sunday not today. Hadn’t thought of that.

I dunno … I think this is a misstep but I genuinely hope she’s getting stronger and that the chemo is working.

PrincessofWells · 13/07/2024 12:23

@thebluebeyond you are nasty, toxic, and ignorant. Ffs leave her alone.

upinaballoon · 13/07/2024 12:24

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 13/07/2024 10:40

I'm glad she's feeling well enough to do this now. Hopefully this means she'll be back to her normal duties. Otherwise, I agree it doesn't look good - it looks like she's just choosing to do the things she enjoys best. Either she is well enough to be out and about, or she's not - she can't just choose her favourite engagements!

Edited

On chemo you have good days and bad days. Didn't you hear what she said? Didn't you take any notice? She said she hoped to do some things this summer. She's not just popping along because she likes a game of tennis. She's the patron (if that is the right word) so she's bound to want to go along.

Saltyspray · 13/07/2024 12:26

I’m glad she feels well enough to go.
I don’t see it as either praise worthy or bad optics.
I hope she has a wonderful day

Misthios · 13/07/2024 12:27

Cannot believe the snidey and catty comments on this thread.

The PoW is patron of the All England Club - it is one of her "causes". I have a friend going through chemo right now and gave up work as soon as she got her cancer diagnosis. She has had endless scans and tests and biopsies and is now having fortnightly chemo. She couldn't manage to work, but could probably manage to sit watching tennis.

Hope she is making a good recovery.

upinaballoon · 13/07/2024 12:27

MartyFunkhouser · 13/07/2024 10:53

Nothing against Kate, but I’m really hoping it won’t result in a sea of ‘isn’t she amazing for showing up when she has cancer’ bollocks.

Well it might, but I shall be careful to attribute the bollocks to the people who say it and not to her.

DayIntarnishedarmour · 13/07/2024 12:31

I’m not a royalist but no matter what her privilege and position in life, she’s going through a truly shit time and it’s great she is going to something that she’ll enjoy.

SentebalesChair · 13/07/2024 12:32

A journalist called people lesser mortals. No one else. A fucking mealie mouthed hack.

The cancer sufferers in my family are and were not that.

But to denigrate someone for the words of another makes you just as bad as that journalist.

The lesson is don’t be a cunt to those going through cancer.

It doesn’t matter who they are or what they do.

It doesn’t matter how they live their lives.

Live your own life.

Just don’t be a cunt.

I think the Women’s Final would be better optics.

She and the palace will know that so there is likely a reason she’s going Sunday.

It could be a simple as she’s not up to it on Saturday. When I had cancer a (now ex) friend of mine got really angry that I could do things on a Thursday but not a Wednesday. She just could not grasp that I felt much better on a Thursday, but Wednesdays are too close.

Also with the football her attendance on Sunday is going to be big news only for a short time whereas today it could overshadow the event. I think that’s quite probably the reason - it’s a big event but it’ll be relatively low key in terms of coverage afterwards because of the football.

Uricon2 · 13/07/2024 12:33

If it were any other 42 year old who had gone through abdominal surgery, discovered they had cancer, then had cancer treatment, I'd say that it was great they were able to get out and do something enjoyable.

So I make no apology for saying it about Kate. I hope she has a lovely time.

EachandEveryone · 13/07/2024 12:38

I’m having chemo. Just had number 4 out of 12 and I do t know how I’m going to get through it. I know it’s all different but if I’m not having the runs I’m asleep, I am a nurse and the last thing on my mind is work. Yes the sick pay needs looking at last time I claimed UC it went through very quickly. This time I’m not eligible for it. I’m sat here sweating wondering if I can make it into town this afternoon to go and watch a film, should I just stay in then? It’s ridiculous to have a go about someone getting a bloody break from this treatment. And cruel.

I can't believe the nastiness (envy) of some mumsnetters.

I certainly did listen, and I have family members going through chemo. Can't you see what I'm saying? It looks bad to do this, but not to, for example, do one of her Early Years or mental health events, for example. As I said before I am glad she feels well enough to do this. I have nothing against the woman, in fact as someone who works in Early Years I welcome her involvement.
