I presume she has her own brains enough to know if she wants to attend or not?

It's obvious this is an excuse to pull up this again 😂

Pull it up again? you do realise that for many people the hurt and anger is on going and has not gone anywhere? This has turned people against having a royal family like nothing I have ever seen in my life, and it isn't going away any time soon.

I am glad you think the distress caused to so many people is amusing to you. Go ahead, laugh all you like, it says nothing at all about the people you are laughing at, and a lot about you

Massive tennis fan attends massively popular tennis tournament…calls it work.

Well .I don't see anywhere that says that. People surprised at Princess having a day out Shocker !

MrsLeonFarrell · 13/07/2024 11:08

As others have said, this is part of her duties as Patron of LTA. Wimbledon holds the position it does in the tennis year in part because of the Royal patronage, it makes it special. With all the money they have lost this year due to the weather I'm sure they are delighted that Catherine is able to come and present the trophy, and that the Queen came in her place in another day.

I thought she might attend on Sunday when they announced she wouldn't be supporting William at his annual charity polo match. It's a good choice, sitting down, in the fresh air, and she can take breaks if necessary.

meercat23 · 13/07/2024 11:10

I worked throughout adjuvant treatment for cancer against advice from my doctors. I really wish I hadn't as now, 4 years later, I am still coping with the effects of the treatment. The Princess of Wales should absolutely follow the medical advice she has been given and should return to public life as and when she feels well enough.

TheTripThatWasnt · 13/07/2024 11:10

PrincessMee · 13/07/2024 11:04

Do you know how long it is going to be? Do you know if she is going to sit through the game?

The men's final will 99% likely be longer than the women's. Unless the women have the longest 3 set match ever and the men's is over in 3 quick sets. Neither of which is likely.
And of course she'll sit through the whole thing.

Metempsychosis · 13/07/2024 11:10

Nobody in this thread has praised her for doing this.

Most of the pro-POW posters seem to be thinking, as I do, that it's simply good to see that she's doing well enough to be out for the day. She's a mother of young children, she seems perfectly nice, she's apparently been seriously ill. If she's well enough to get dressed up and go to the tennis for a full day then I'm happy to hear that.

CelesteCunningham · 13/07/2024 11:11

TheTripThatWasnt · 13/07/2024 11:01

Interesting that she's going to the men's final, not the women's (which would be shorter, and an easier gig).

William's going to the football isn't he? Think they avoid "competing" with each other. A very strange life!

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 13/07/2024 11:11

I’m not being funny but people can pay for a critical illness policy. Mine is about 15 pounds a month and it is essential.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 13/07/2024 11:12

William's going to the football isn't he? Think they avoid "competing" with each other. A very strange life!

But the women's final is today, the men's is tomorrow.

None of it will clash with the football, but if they were trying to avoid each other's engagements, she'd be there today.

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 11:12

@thebluebeyond not sure why that newspaper article turned people against the
RF. It wasn’t like PoW wrote the article and called other cancer sufferers lesser mortals

squashyhat · 13/07/2024 11:13

I'm glad she's feeling well enough but it would have been a good look for her and Charlotte to attend the womens final together instead.

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 11:19

MartyFunkhouser · 13/07/2024 10:53

Nothing against Kate, but I’m really hoping it won’t result in a sea of ‘isn’t she amazing for showing up when she has cancer’ bollocks.

This is the exact issue - it is nothing to do with the woman herself, I don't care what she does or does not do.

it is the response, which has lead to unbelievable anger and distress among other cancer sufferers and their families.

I never used to care if we had a royal family or not, and had no interest in them, apart from feeling vaguely sorry for them,

But having seen the attitude in the press, particularly calling other cancer sufferers "lesser mortals" I think they HAVE to go. Many others I know feel exactly the same. We cannot tolerate a society where poorer people are considered "lesser mortals" when coping with a life thousands of times harder than that of the person they are being compared with.

The attitude that this reveals is the reason the monarchy now has to go. I wasn't in favour before, as I understand the long drawn out legal process involved. And I didn't think it mattered much either way.

But this "lesser mortals" comment has really ignited something very wide spread, and it isn't going away.

And again, we have yet more of the same attitude here. She wont be the only cancer sufferer at Wimbledon. But look at this. A whole thread set up to praise her to the skies for....what exactly? A miniscule effort, which is nothing at all compared to the efforts other people are putting in to their battles to keep their head above water with cancer.

It is this attitude to her, rather than her herself, which has started this wave of republican feeling.

The institution HAS to go. We are in the 21st century FGS. Poorer people are not "lesser mortals"

ShikShakShok · 13/07/2024 10:28

I know I’m going to get slated but not sure how I feel about that. I fully understand (and know from first hand experience) that you have good days and bad days with cancer. But surely if she’s willing to make a public appearance it should be for one of her causes rather than a Wimbledon game. Especially as a Wimbledon game lasts a couple of hours which can be exhausting to sit through if you’re already not feeling 100%.

It is part of her role

We have no idea how sick she's been so if she's up for it then all good in my view

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 13/07/2024 11:25

But look at this. A whole thread set up to praise her to the skies for....what exactly?

I actually agree with your overall point about abolishing the monarchy.

But in fairness to OP, she didn't praise her. No one on the thread has really. This is the royal family board. Other threads on this board are Anne being in hospital, then Anne being back at work, the king's message to the England squad, William, George and Charlotte going to see Taylor Swift. They're not necessarily praising, just discussing.
There would probably have been a thread about Kate attending Wimbledon regardless of her illness.

Vespanest · 13/07/2024 11:25

To those who spout comments such as two days work in six months and other shit like “well I worked all through my chemo” are as shitty as the awful “lesser mortals”. I worked through one chemo the second time the chemo itself nearly killed me. There are cancer patients reading this too ill to go to work, Catherine isn’t your audience these people are. I was hospitalised, catheterised, intravenously fed but hey ho Barbara in accounts worked all through her chemo, so no excuses.

thebluebeyond · 13/07/2024 10:31

well, you can't live on ESA. It takes months to be processed, and when it arrives, it doesn't really even cover the cost of transport to hospital. So you have to earn something, even if you can't go into your normal place of work because you are immunocompromised

My employer provides full pay for 12 months, then half. So people with cancer in my sector don’t return to work until they are able.
Also most have critical illness cover so they get a payout form that.

I don’t begrudge anyone taking time off for treatment regardless of their role.

lemonyellows · 13/07/2024 11:28

Fair play to her. Why not go to an event where she is mainly seated and something she enjoys immensely as well as one of her causes. Sounds an ideal thing for her to do. Don't get the hate and criticism.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 13/07/2024 11:11

No, it is not a laughing matter that for some people £15 a month, would be a stretch too far in their finances, to be able to afford that.

crumblingschools · 13/07/2024 11:31

@thebluebeyond surely your anger is misdirected. Be angry at lazy journalism, be angry that some people’s sick pay cover is woeful. If RF were abolished tomorrow do you think the people who have to work through cancer treatment would suddenly get 12 months sick pay

Puffinfoot · 13/07/2024 11:31

Personally, I think it's perfectly reasonable, but indo wonder at their PR (again) not realising that many people wouldn't, as demonstrated here.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 13/07/2024 11:35

PersonallyVictimizedByReginaGeorge · 13/07/2024 10:55

Yeh, i'm a lowly civil servant but colleagues of mine got 183 days off full pay before, if required, 183 days at half pay. (These are the rules in ireland but v similar structure to the UK, so I'd be interested to see how british cs operates wrt sick pay) Obviously that's with evidence that you're really having chemo/radio, recovering.

Edited

That must be nice. Lots of companies have no sick pay at all. I broke my leg and couldn’t work due to the nature of my job. I was off for nearly 3 months on SSP. My husband was in a bad car accident and again couldn’t work due the nature of his job. He was off for 2 months on SSP. Even on minimum wage, SSP is only around 1/4 of a full wage. It’s very difficult to pay a mortgage and bills on £100 a week.

Grapesichord · 13/07/2024 11:42

@thebluebeyond
I don't feel any hurt or anger about my partner's cancer. I am beyond grateful to the NHS.
You may not mean to but it comes across as you being angry that people with cancer take time off work.
All of your negativity about cancer and having time off causes much more distress than Catherine going to a tennis match.
Nasty digs at a mother who is undergoing chemo just backfires on any cause you are trying to ally with. It suggests that republicans think that cancer sufferers should work through chemo. I don't think for a second that most republicans would agree with you over the issue of a mother undergoing chemo having an outing.

halava · 13/07/2024 11:48

I don't wish her any ill will.

I'm a cynic though, so to me - the men's final was chosen so that the reports of her attendance, her dress, hair, make up blah blah won't be in the Sunday papers. And Monday's news will be either b ecstacy for England football fans or a post mortem on why England lost to Spain with pictures of drunkenness, England shirts, topless men with pints, hi jinks and so on.

The choice of final was carefully chosen methinks!
