Kensington Palace have released a new photo of William and the children to mark his 42nd birthday. The photo was taken by Catherine.

Honestly I think this is one of my favourite photos of the family!

Just catching up and dearie me , some people are awfully het up about a charming photo !
if it was any family other than the Wales I suspect certain posters would have a different reaction !

Spot on. It's the subjects, not "the composition".

Uricon2 · 22/06/2024 08:17

When we were children we had a Disney book with a section about the Magic Kingdom (in California, the only one then) We used to reread it knowing that it was about as close as we'd get, as it may as well have been on Saturn.😂

As an adult, I've got no desire to go to any of the iterations, but am happy to totally accept that lots do and have a great time. There is no innate superiority in sniffing at the popular and whatever some would like, the RF currently seem largely popular with most of the UK, most of the time.

I've got republican friends. Their objection to the institution of monarchy is ideological, they don't have any issue with the members of it (except when they do something that would be wrong if done by anyone) They don't demonstrate their dislike for the system by "hating" a perfectly innocuous and pleasant family picture.

It's everything about it. Yes, the composition. The placement of figures. The odd angle. The overbright background colours. The ambiguous expressions. Tbh, I think William is a bit of a jump scare in it as well. Although I think you're right. In all honesty, the subjects of the photo are vitally important - they matter far more to to all those who love what they apparently see as talent, insight and joy and get who get weirdly overwrought because quite a few people have dared to criticise it even here in the realm of the hive mind. People are allowed to have different opinions, it's a picture of public figures not your firstborn, bit weird to take it so personally!

Most certainly. It's just a little strange that all of the photo's denigrators are either anti monarchists or fans of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Those on these boards who see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a pair of drama loving muppets still usually acknowledge a nice photo of them and their family.

The photo under discussion is a nice snap, posted in celebration of a birthday. It's not Annie Liebovitz. Although this is a great photo - I'd be interested to hear a critique:

Nobody's taking it personally.
We're having a discussion.
Some of us like a happy family picture, knowing what they've been through in the last six months. . Others are full of negativity, using the word hate.
We're free to have an opinion; that's the way it works.

What a gorgeous picture I like the way little Mia is holding great grandma's handbag!

IsoldeWagner · 22/06/2024 08:38

No doubt someone will come on here to hate that picture too, though!

Of course they will - the Wales DC are in it !

True. How awful to be like that about innocent children.

I dont think this photo is anything like as artificial and time consuming as the other one - I like this one - it is exactly what it says it is. as to which children are in it, I don't hate any children - I also would not recognise them or be able to name them.

StormzyinaTCup · 22/06/2024 08:45

It’s a fun family photo.
Nothing more nothing less.

Certainly not seeing anything worthy of ‘hate’.

Princess of Wales is a mum with an interest in photography taking a picture of her family on the beach, she isn’t claiming to be David Bailey.

I’d like one or two of the posters on here to put one of their family holiday photos up and we can judge the awful composition, what the children are wearing, how many retakes we think were made etc etc.

As a PP mentioned upthread, it’s the subject not the composition. Just come out and say it, there is no need to hide behind photographic terms pretending that’s the problem and where your interest lies.

Salemforcuddles · 22/06/2024 08:46

@boombang Gosh " hating" a family photo, how odd

Mylovelygreendress · 22/06/2024 08:47

Alltheprettyseahorses · 22/06/2024 08:03

Or maybe people don't actually think it's a charming photo but I suppose that's just too much for some in this very weird corner of mumsnet to deal with.

The photo is of a man whose wife is undergoing chemotherapy( been there , it’s no picnic) and their 3 young children who are seeing Mummy unwell and probably very sad and anxious .
Said family have a day at the beach and Mummy takes some photos . They decide to share a couple despite a previous ( Mother’s Day) photo being ripped to shreds and the criticism continues .
If I were them, i wouldn’t issue any more photos .
Just remembered that I once gave my Mum a school photo of my 3 DC and she commented that one of my DDs looked fat .
I never gave her another photo.

There's a bit of a difference between normal people taking holiday photos and an official picture put out by public figures.

What is the problem?
Genuinely?
If it's the family - say so.
It's certainly not the picture.

Salemforcuddles · 22/06/2024 08:51

They can't win, a nice photo of a father having fun with his children and it's ripped apart, how very sad considering the year they have had

IsoldeWagner · 22/06/2024 08:55

@Salemforcuddles - this.
So sad.

Absolutely. What on earth is wrong with people? So much bile and bitterness.

Salemforcuddles · 22/06/2024 08:58

@EvangelistaSister perhaps if they had been to Disneyland......

Alltheprettyseahorses · 22/06/2024 08:59

Personally, I'm not keen on that photo that's just been put up. It's very old-fashioned and I don't like the way everyone is crowded in the centre yet still distant, unbalanced and with no sense of unity. Ugly decor too. Others are free to disagree, it is all completely subjective after all and I won't be sad about it. I don't believe there has to be too much analysis anyway, an initial reaction whether positive or negative is more than good enough.

Off the top of my head, the only photo of the royals that I really thought was nice was that one of Meghan and the umbrella in the rain. Which is probably forbidden on this board but anyway...

StormzyinaTCup · 22/06/2024 09:00

Oh please!!

We’re getting into the ridiculous now and I'm shortly going to feel embarrassed for you, which I’m sure you don’t want.

'Off the top of my head, the only photo of the royals that I really thought was nice was that one of Meghan and the umbrella in the rain. Which is probably forbidden on this board but anyway...'

Actually, that photo was pretty much universally liked.....

ArcaneWireless · 22/06/2024 09:01

The photo of Meghan in the rain was lovely.

Interestingly though, out of all the photos of the RF that you could choose, you chose one of a person who is no longer part of the RF.

Salemforcuddles · 22/06/2024 09:02

Loved the photo of Meghan and the umbrella, who wouldn't?
