Kensington Palace have released a new photo of William and the children to mark his 42nd birthday. The photo was taken by Catherine.

Honestly I think this is one of my favourite photos of the family!

This sounds like the Chat GPT 'assisted' summaries my students write.

Interesting observation - I'm autistic and apparently it's common for autistic people (in online interactions) to be mistaken for AI.

Only unqualified praise of the photograph is permitted here. Awarding it a miserly 8 out 10 puts you firmly on the 'every minor aspect of your life that you happen to reveal must be ridiculed and sneered at' list.

Don't be ridiculous.

when I look at it, I don't see happiness, I see force and fakeness, and boredom, and resentment, and tedious retake after retake, after retake after retake.

So purely from the point of view of empathy with the subjects, I hate it

That is taking an extremely jaundiced view! Why can't you just take it on face value like most other people are?!

What a load of shite - you don't know whether there were retakes or not!!!

You know what, they don't need your "empathy"!!!

Hoping for a republic - might conceivably happen before George VII.

Doubt it.

Oh I have!!! I'm a graduate in English so I have fucking amazing pretty good critical analysis skills. You are out of sync with the vast majority of posters on the thread, and unlike you, I am not seeing things that aren't there.

Runnerinthenight · 21/06/2024 23:48

Doubt it.

Well, I'm unlikely to find out, as, barring a tragedy leading to untimely death, I won't outlive William.

Neither will I, but I can't see any reason at this point in time why George shouldn't inherit the throne when his time comes.

I'll probably know anyway because I will be up there on my cloud gently playing my harp.

You're correct that I'm out of synch with other posters, but you seem to have missed that:

I have been told I should get out more, because I find it interesting to look at pictures on the walls of public buildings.

I have been told I am 'pompous' and want to appear 'superior' because I don't fancy going to Disneyland.

The apparent crime of not wanting to book the next plane to Orlando also means I mustn't be much fun on a night out.
Finally, I'm boring.

I'm also an English graduate; it seems to be a good thing that I graduated in pre-internet days, as I've also been accused of sounding like a chat bot.

Your critical analysis might be excellent, but perhaps you are one of those people who skim-reads and misses things in a long-running thread or other lengthy piece of writing that might (understandably) not all be of interest to you - easily done and commonly seen on here, so not meant as a criticism.

I'm an agnostic, so I have no idea whether I will know what happens after my death. I can only hope that the UK will eventually decide to retire the RF in a humane way.

I’m not really sure how you see all this actually.

I can admit I have seen these children looking bored and strained on plenty of occasions. But there is nothing in their expressions that suggests anything but free-spirited joy in this particular shot. A family having fun together.

I can only think you have trouble reading facial expression if you genuinely think this photo looks like boredom, resentment and so forth. Louis looks slightly apprehensive but more as if he isn’t quite sure than because he’s done it over and over. Other than that, those are happy children or the world’s most talented child actors. In which case they should put that talent to better use on lots of state occasions when George looks like he’s going to cry with boredom and Louis looks fit to burst with frustration. ( As any children their age would).

Oh dear plenty of this floating about.

That kind of closed-minded, judgemental attitude baffles me. Why does it matter whether someone learned a word 30 seconds ago, or 30 years ago? Would you tell a child they weren't allowed to use a word they'd only just encountered? If the person who created that meme had their way, we'd all be conversing in words of one syllable.

@Alltheprettyseahorses i wasn’t thinking that deeply. It’s a nice photo, end of.

Honestly, why give it so much thought?

I have so many problems in my life - cancer, with a bad prognosis to start with.
So I’m just saying it’s a nice photo. I don’t have time to think more about it.
I don’t understand the attention you’re putting into it

Edited

And sorry to hear about your cancer Redroses and I hope your prognosis improves.

But also wanted to say how I admire types like you who are grappling with such a lot and still able to just be pleasant.

You have been pompous and patronising in your posts and you seem to have no self-awareness.

Nobody mentioned Orlando - my children were in Paris, enjoying the sights and sounds of the city and spending one day doing Disney.

I also graduated long before internet days and have also acquired a MSc and other postgrads pre-internet.

Even if I skim read I don't miss anything.

Clearly, you do miss things as you've ignored every example I gave that supported my conclusion.

It might well be that I am not as self-aware as a neurotypical person.

'Orlando' was an example of a Disney location. My point still stands if you substitute 'Paris' and add the options of 'Ferry' and 'Train' as a method of reaching the destination. I was vilified for not wanting to go to an unspecified Disney park, (be that Florida, California or Paris) - but, of course, you know that because you read the thread closely, so my conclusion is that you're being deliberately obtuse.

Don't we have to pass a test before we're allowed to be up there on a cloud, gently playing a harp? I don't think it's a forgone conclusion.

@Alltheprettyseahorses So can you give us examples of what you do consider nice/ good photos?

Goodness me! Is it really so distressing to you that someone else has a different opinion about a photo of public figures?! There are lots of nice photos of various subjects, it's not mandatory to think that is one of them.

Mylovelygreendress · 22/06/2024 07:54

Just catching up and dearie me , some people are awfully het up about a charming photo !
if it was any family other than the Wales I suspect certain posters would have a different reaction !

Or maybe people don't actually think it's a charming photo but I suppose that's just too much for some in this very weird corner of mumsnet to deal with.

IsoldeWagner · 22/06/2024 08:10

I think it's weirder to have so much hate for a happy family photo.
