Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

I do not think William takes after Diana. I think both William and Harry take after the Windsor side of the family.

Well I do think that William looks like Diana.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 08/05/2024 01:10

Gosh he’s the spit of Diana! That photo that @Serenster posted is hilarious!

Me too - the colouring, the nose, the bone structure, even his expression when he meets people - that little tilt of the head. Pure Diana.
If you put a reddish tint on Charles' hair - proper Harry look a like.

Isn't it fascinating that people change over time to resemble quite different people in their family? When H was a youngster and all that nonsense about him being James Hewitt's son was going, I thought 'No, he's a Spencer'. And if you looked at pictures of Diana's father as a young man, and her brother, Harry's colouring and profile seemed to favour them.

Now, though, I agree he's morphing into much more of a Windsor, for better or worse! Ironic, considering he's seemed desperate recently to identify with his mother's family.

IsoldeWagner · 08/05/2024 07:41

I know! Harry's nose and close set eyes are totally Charles and Philip! He seems to have their skin tone as well. Very similar.

queenofarles · 08/05/2024 09:11

I don’t see Prince Philip in him at all, different nose and jaw , Prince Philip was handsome, his side profile is very sharp with Greek nose , although his genes are not quite purely Greek I suspect?

Definitely agree about PP being handsome and having a different nose and jaw.
I do think his eyes were very similar to Chares' and Harry's though maybe not as close set.
They looked more so when he was much older for some reason.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think Philip was very much of Scandinavian/northern European heritage. And (this makes me sound as if I value people only for their fortunate looks, but I really don't) it's sad for the RF that none of his children seem to have inherited his undoubted handsomeness. Edward is the most like him, but has a less rugged look - very red lips when he was young!

I'm fascinated by family likeness (or not) and I think most people would agree that the awful Andrew was probably the most handsome of the children when young, but I don't think he was like his father. He reminded me of the Queen's uncle, the Duke of Kent (not the present DoK - her cousin). Also, the Duke of Windsor was handsome - in a more 'pretty' way than Philip though - and I think, very different from all his siblings, especially George VI. I think I can see his looks in Prince George sometimes.

I also think Beatrice, though much prettier, has a look of Queen Victoria, with her slightly protruding eyes. That sounds awful - I'm sorry! I just think the way a look endures through the generations is fascinating.

Serenster · 08/05/2024 10:40

Bea and Lord Frederick Windsor both have very Hanoverian eyes! They didn’t just come from Victoria - here’s the oldest son of George II.

Laughing at the denial of William looking like his mother. It has been remarked upon since he was born. Even by Harry, who thinks William has started looking less like Diana as he's got older. Well he'd have had to have looked like her to start with then, wouldn't he?! William was his mother's image when he was a teenager and still has many of her mannerisms as well as her looks. Since he's older now than his mother was when she died, we don't know at what level the current resemblance might be, but we can look at the other Spencer men. I think his face has filled out a little with age, like his grandfather and uncle on the Spencer side.

Philip was a Prince of Greece, but didn't have a drop of Greek blood. He was of mostly Danish and German descent, and looked it.

I also don't see the resemblance to Harry at all. Philip was much more handsome and had much finer features.

And a good dollop of Russian. His paternal grandmother was Russian, IIRC.

I agree William looks like Diana, but there's a pic of the previous Duke of Kent (the late Queen's uncle) in RAF uniform which at first glance looks very like William.

IcedPurple · 08/05/2024 11:37

Weren't the Russian tsars mostly of German origin too?

At one point, most of the non Catholic royals of Europe were basically German! Including many British royals.

queenofarles · 08/05/2024 12:45

Gosh it’s so confusing!! And fascinating how genetics are inherited really!

Prince Philip’s paternal grandmother is Russian and half German.
I guess he’s more German than Russian and Danish?
Princess Alice and her Siblings are all quite Tall and broad ,and have distinctive features Windsors are quite tiny in comparison .

Yes, I think he was mostly German.

He was of the house of Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glucksburg, which is about as German as it gets!

It is indeed fascinating how we all look like one and then another of our forbears as we grow up and grow older.

Just as well. No messing about with imposters in bed-pans in the Lindo wing.

Yes - absolutely! I'd forgotten about Lord F Windsor. There's a famous painting of George III which also shows the characteristic Hanoverian eyes and - have you ever seen pics of Victoria's father, the Duke of York? He definitely has the pop-eyes and the beaky nose.

I wonder where these features came from? George I was the nephew of Uber-hunk, Prince Rupert of the Rhine, who was tall, dark, handsome and absolutely nothing like what we think of as the Hanoverians.

CoffeeCantata · 08/05/2024 16:01

I've said upthread that I don't value people for their lucky looks so please don't take the following the wrong way...I'm not an oil-painting myself!

You often here it said that Diana was 'absolutely beautiful'. She was tall, had a model figure and was a very, very attractive woman and totally photogenic. But I don't think she was perfectly beautiful if that means having completely regular, delicate, symmetrical features. Diana had a fairly large nose - a strong feature. She was extremely good-looking for sure, but perhaps not beautiful in the way that Vivien Leigh or Grace of Monaco were acknowledged to be beautiful.

I think William has inherited her looks, including the strong nose, and he's a handsome chap. Yes, he's lost his hair but he's embraced it and is none the less attractive for that. I think his brother may be slightly in denial about his hair loss.
