Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

@IcedPurple you are derailing. Harry is visiting in his role as Founder and Patron of Invictus, not any other role.

I'd very much appreciate seeing your evidence for that.

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2024 21:22

Jesus @IcedPurple .

If that is what it looks like standing up, you can tell it won’t be much better lying down.

It would put you right off making jam.

No dancing required.

Thanks @ArcaneWireless !

Royal visits are done at the request of the elected government, to contribute to their foreign policy. It isn't a personal choice by Charles, William, QE2 or any other. Just as if the government don't want - to use a recent example - Charles to go to an environmental summit, then Charles doesn't go.

But i suspect this is all pointless, no matter how much it is explained...

Like training an Amstrad to be a bot

BigWillyLittleTodger · 01/05/2024 21:29

How about telling the DOE she does nothing but watch people dance.

Members of the Royal Family occasionally take on a special role for which overseas visits can bring much needed awareness to a particular issue. The Duchess of Edinburgh works with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, alongside the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as part of her work on the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative.

Probably the last time was when someone fell to a President’s feet, thanking them for their service.

😂

Harry is visiting in his role as Founder and Patron of Invictus, not any other role.

I'm still not seeing any evidence of this, @NoisySnail.

There's article in Vanity Fair that also provides no obvious sources whatsoever for its assertions about the connections between the H&M trip and Invictus, or between the trip and any request from the Nigerian Government.

It's all a bit ... strange. Just a Nigerian Daily Times SM message about the Nigerian military ('defence HQ') being happy to receive HRH Duke of Duchess [sic] on a visit.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Will Travel to Nigeria to Support the Invictus Games

On Sunday, a spokesperson for the nation’s defense minister said the couple would visit with service members in May, during their first official international tour since leaving their royal roles in 2020.

There is a quiet grace to the DoE. Those who need to tell the worst of stories will do so knowing they will be heard by a woman who will be mindful of their pain.

A reminder that it isn’t all about dancing or collapsing.

Why do we need evidence? It’s obviously their truth that they have been invited to Nigeria on behalf of Invictus. What does the acutal truth matter 🤪🙄

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 21:49

BigWillyLittleTodger · 01/05/2024 21:27

That is not evidence. It is simply a list of important people with actual jobs that the Royal Family have met.

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 21:52

The visit to Nigeria on behalf of Invictus has nothing to do with those who follow the Royal Family. Why does the Nigerian government need to issue a press release in Britain?

No it isn’t. It outlines the role of the monarch and royal family with regard to the FCDO. or did you just look at the list of names under the photos?

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2024 21:54

Oh I don’t know.

Perhaps the Duke of Duchess wanted it that way.

How does one issue a press release 'to' a country? You either issue one or you don't.

The Nigerian government hasn't. And neither has Invictus, on whose 'behalf' this trip is supposedly happening.

You issue a press release in the language of the country and send it to that countries press agencies.
Why should they issue a press release? You do that to get publicity. Maybe they do not seek that publicity?

Right.

So that 'government announcement' thing you mentioned? That I could 'find easily' with the google?

It doesn't actually exist?

I said if you google you can easily find out information about the invitation and why it was issued.
I did not say there was an official press release.

Runnerinthenight · 01/05/2024 23:07

I feel like I've landed in some parallel universe.

Some people really would argue with their toenails.

AutumnCrow · 01/05/2024 23:14

These are my 'maybe' musings so far:

(1) Harry has probably fallen out with or been chastised/ghosted by Johnny Mercer MP (Con, Minister for Veterans) after the fiasco of the leaky email and the telling off by the judge in the High Court JR (that Harry lost).

This will have embarrassed Mercer at a time when he really didn't need to be dragged into anything 'unseemly', as he is portraying himself as taking a principled stance on the whistle-blowers to the Inquiry into alleged extra-judicial killings by the SAS in Afghanistan. Mercer may be rethinking his stance on Harry & Invictus.

(2) Harry as we know is pissed off with his father the King and his brother the future King. Harry is poking at the monarchy's relationship with the Commonwealth. See: Jamaica visit. Next: Nigeria visit.

(3) Someone fed a story to Vanity Fair about the Duke Of Duchess visiting Nigeria and the supposed 'at the request of' and 'on behalf of' stuff - and the Duke Of Duchess supporters believe it word-for-word. However it all still needs sourced confirmation.

If it isn't an official announcement, then doesn't that suggest the 'information' available through Google about the invitation is possibly untrue?

Anything can be posted on the Internet and picked up in a Google search. That doesn't make it accurate or true

I think that ridiculous Vanity fair article comes up at the top of Google search.
