Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

@IcedPurple Just google. You can easily find it.
She is not an aspiring jam merchant. Just as Charles is not an aspiring jam merchant even though the estate he manages makes and sells jam. Your insults are a bit pathetic.

This may clarify some matters for you, @NoisySnail .

I missed reading the part where the Kings role is to negotiate or lobby foreign governments on political matters?

That would be because it's not there.

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:53

The Royal Family visit foreign countries and visit local projects, attend local events and watch local people singing and dancing.
It is a very different role.

I did google. I could only find a clumsily written article in some online magazine which certainly wasn't an official statement. Also no mention of the Nigerian government, but of a military official. That's why I'd like to see the official statement you refer to.

You have seen this 'statement', haven't you?

Your constant comparisons with the King are laughable and I'll not indulge them.

That's not the role.

I know. It was sarcasm.
My examples of Bush's visit to Nigeria was for an explicitly political purpose. Which is why it would have been totally inappropriate for Charles to do the same.

IsoldeWagner · 01/05/2024 20:54

I am aware of how their role is described. But practically I am describing what they actually do.

smilesy · 01/05/2024 20:56

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:48

@smilesy Whether a President's visit lends legitimacy depends on the reasons for their visit. Bush's visit was to discuss the role of Nigeria in the Darfur genocide. That does not sound like a visit that legitimises a regime.

Which visit of Charles had legitimised the regime, then? A State visit is often carried out in conjunction with members of the government who at the same time are discussing pertinent matters. Bush didn’t just rock up on his own to berate the Nigerians about their role in Darfour but would have been part of the diplomacy carried out on behalf of the American government. US presidents are not autocrats (despite what Trump may think)

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2024 20:57

I think I prefer the hearty one.

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:59

@smilesy that is not true.
Tell me which government Ministers accompanied William and Catherine to the Caribbean and what were they negotiating?

Me too 😂

OneHeartySnail · 01/05/2024 21:03

Thanks @ArcaneWireless !

Royal visits are done at the request of the elected government, to contribute to their foreign policy. It isn't a personal choice by Charles, William, QE2 or any other. Just as if the government don't want - to use a recent example - Charles to go to an environmental summit, then Charles doesn't go.

But i suspect this is all pointless, no matter how much it is explained...

I said often. Not every time. Much like the president of the US doesn’t carry out negotiations every time he goes on a state
visit. Sometimes they just watch people dancing

BigWillyLittleTodger · 01/05/2024 21:07

Is what about Charles the new what about Liz Truss or the new what about Andrew? Who will be next on the what about hit list?

BemusedAmerican · 01/05/2024 21:11

I just read the links. From my American perspective, the RF visits Commonwealth countries to reaffirm their connections and the values the countries all have in common - happiness, prosperity, a rich cultural life.

Can you tell me a time the US President has simply visited a foreign country to watch people dance?

Chief Impact Officer.
I can't remember what the business actually does, or what his impact is, but he's certainly a chief.

It provides some gratis and some paid services to Invictus, and money changes hands.

Yes.

One more thing that's made me think less of Invictus. It's getting to be quite a long list.

ArcaneWireless · 01/05/2024 21:15

Probably the last time was when someone fell to a President’s feet, thanking them for their service.

prince harry GIF

Well, when the dancing is this good, who wouldn't travel the world just to see it?

King, prince, jam lady. It would be worth it!

You are making yourself look really silly now, you know full well there are far more to state visits than watching people dance and unless you are actually part of the British Foreign Office you have absolutely no clue what they instruct King Charles to discuss behind closed doors and away from the cameras.

BemusedAmerican · 01/05/2024 21:20

Well, we had one mayor of NYC who flew to Bermuda every weekend on his private plane and definitely wasn't carrying out NYC business.

One weekend NYC was hit by a major blizzard. People died. It took a long time to recover. No one was happy.

I believe we normally just send First Ladies for the culture-affirming things.

Can you tell me a time when a UK monarch has simply visited a foreign country to watch
people dance?
