I just wanted to share some thoughts I've had since talking to some RL friends last night. I'm a Republican, and didn't actually post much on any of the threads on here. But I did read them, laugh at the ones I found funny and speculated a little IRL. I enjoy robust mental health, but I feel a little sad and down today about the news. And a little guilty. It occurs to me that it might be a real source of distress to some other people. Not the big media ghouls, of course, they have no shame and will just move on to the next thing without looking back, but for those of us who bought in to the whole farrago and maybe posted things we now wish we hadn't. So remember, the media often manipulates us, the establishment often lies to us and it's actually a good thing not to immediately take what we're told at face value. Don't beat yourself up and find someone to talk to if you feel really bad about it. Take care of yourselves.

Yes, but treating Kate as if she's the second coming of the She Wolf of France when she's a girl from the Home Counties who has married royal and is now facing serious illness and a media storm is just wrong. She's 42, she's got 3 young children, is it beyond hope to imagine how she has felt recently, exemplary healthcare and all?

I am the age Diana would have been and remember all of that period, sad lots don't, because the hounding really feels like it now.

It has gone on for centuries and will carry on. Sadly that is the nature of the beast and royal gossip has always been a thing whether deserved or not. It isn't going to stop anytime soon.

We choose what we say, though.

It isn't possible to police what people say though unless it directly contravenes the law. Some of the stuff I have read about Kate these last few weeks has just been so absurd to the point of ridiculous. I think she has more important things to worry about than some crackpot gossip and has done what she has done to try to calm it all down. beyond what she has said in her announcement, there isn't much more to know or speculate upon.

Nah, it can be policed on a forum like this. If you've been on this board for a couple of weeks, you'll know exactly what has been said and it really wasn't OK.

I never told anyone what they can and can't say. I just pointed out that if you truly are THAT bothered about the furore about what people have been saying and TRULY cared about what Kate has said she wants to happen then you would cease chatting about it and it would die a death. That isn't giving permission or dictating what to say/not say, that is merely advising people to take their own advice about not continuing to fuel it all.

P.S. Keep chatting

I think that some people forget that the princess of Wales is a real person with real feelings and real children, not a fictional character.

But if you stop it here, people saying that stuff will only find a new outlet for it. That is what I mean when I say you can't police it.

Umm no. Firstly, it’s inevitable that people will speculate about the richest and by far the most famous family in the country. And indeed a family that generally requires the public to pay attention to it, or otherwise may wonder whether their roles are relevant and whether it’s right that a single family has an inherited net worth of £35 billion in a country where millions are suffering food poverty.

Anyway, the only speculation that the majority of people engaged in initially was that “something” might be up other than “just” an operation, with KM being completely off the radar for such a length of time. This idea then gained traction with more people when the RF released a fake photo and then they, or somebody else, hired bodydoubles. Anyway, the people who thought something else “might” be up were labelled crazy conspiracists. But then it turned out they were right and, sadly, something else was indeed up. Then you now have the likes of the Daily Mail and the Sun - which spew hatred against various easy demographic targets on a daily basis - claiming that people should be “ashamed” for, correctly, sensing that something else was up. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail currently has 4 articles about KM on its front page, including a live update page entitled “Kate cancer latest news”. Lovely to see they're respecting her wishes. I really do hope that KM is “well, and getting better every day” as she says in that video, but I suspect the palace is still not disclosing the whole truth, but I guess that’s their prerogative.

well, advising is much better than demanding as some have done on here. Perhaps I should have said 'suggesting' instead but either way, keep chatting!

I’m unsure if the advice to stop talking about it/fuelling it really is for Kate’s benefit.

It could be argued that the sooner we stop talking about it, the sooner our examples of nasty speculation will all go away and it will be like it never happened.

But it really did.

I don't think it mattered what KP said, people would still run wild with theories, nasty memes etc. They did initially say she'd had surgery and taking a break. People on social media and forums etc weren't happy
with only that information and been goading for more details for weeks.

There's been a level of nastiness and gang mentality I've not seen before. And it continues even after the statement yesterday.

“People on social media and forums” is just background noise. Do you think the RF read or give a toss about what some unheard of amateur reporter speculates on Twitter? Or what musings randoms are posting in some “conspiracy” subreddit? Or some memes shared among an echo chamber group of 50k people on Facebook?

The Great British Tabloid Media meanwhile … see for example exhibit A) The Daily Mail, which currently has just the 5 news stories on its front page including “Live: Kate cancer latest news”. If anyone is going to feel ashamed of anything, feel ashamed for clicking on any of that (and fact that the most hateful tabloid in the country is also the most widely read).

My mum died because of the cancer that was in her at the age of 65. I remember Kylie Minogue when she had breast cancer and she wore a bandana on her head because of the toll chemotherapy took on her body. My mother was exhausted when she had chemo she had no hair. My mother had abdominal cancer they took samples to test. I don't get it.

Please someone make sense of this it don't make sense to me. Kate looked thin with glowing hair like in a pantene advert. I wished my hair looked as glossy and nice as Kates and so did my poor mother. Please someone make sense of that.

Carpediemmakeitcount · 23/03/2024 21:24

I have respect for Kate's uncle at least he stays true to himself.

crumblingschools · 23/03/2024 21:36

@Carpediemmakeitcount my DF had various forms of chemo over a period of 8 years, he never lost his hair.
