Spanish press reporting Kate was extremely ill

I don’t know how credible this is because I saw it on Twitter…

But apparently the media in Spain have reported that Catherine’s surgery was not actually planned, did not go smoothly and she was actually very sick/possibly in a coma for a period of time. And there has been a press blackout in the UK.

Could there be any truth in this? I’m struggling to see WHY something like that would be ‘hidden’ anyway 🤔

Yeah and to be fair the story about Kathryn wasn't a formal balckout as such. Alistair Campbell just phoned all the editors and asked them for the sake of decency not to write on it. Which they didn't, and that was the right decision.

It was reported on widely across Europe tho.

But anyway this was all pre-internet and the high-ups could genuinely get stuff spiked by picking up the phone to Fleet Street's finest. Not possible in this day and age.

Yes there wasn’t an injunction, but it was a blackout in the sense that all the news teams knew the truth and didn’t publish.

That wouldn’t work today.

Sparetoes · 13/03/2024 14:44

That in itself is weird, and something of a miracle, bearing in mind the number of people who must know something?

It is indeed weird and unusual, though often we don't know nearly as much as ppl seem to think about all sorts of things ... As others have said Buckingham Palace doesn't even know what's going on so KP is keeping it as close to their chests as possible and nothing has leaked. Impressive on that front even if the photo debacle (the result of keeping it 100% in house) has backfired.

worriedftb · 13/03/2024 14:53

have you all not learnt what happened to Princess Diana. Leave these people alone. Better yet, we need to stop funding their lifestyle with public money!

Freakinfraser · 13/03/2024 14:53

Mirabai · 13/03/2024 14:38

There isn’t a media blackout in the conventional sense - which means news teams know the true story but are not running it. For example - when Blair was in government, one of his offspring attempted suicide as a teen - that story was subject to blackout.

My friends in news tell me that there is no blackout - genuinely no-one knows what’s going on. According to Private Eye - only the KP inner circle know, Buckingham Palace don’t know.

Edited

Thanks and that seems fair. I’d guess the kids know little too, other than mummy had an op on her tummy. Stops them speaking at school and also as they’d not understand, and stop them being more scared than they need to be.

i think Charles and Camilla will know exactly what the deal is, but it’s been held from the staff ie they have kept this as close knit as possible, to prevent leaks.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/03/2024 14:55

Good for you hooray for thinking critically. Look out for your prize in the post.
I think you answered your own question there. Not everyone is smart! If she isn't then it's quite possibly her

If she's that stupid then I doubt they'd want her looking after the DC anyway, Interesting that you find thinking critically is something to sneer at, though.

I think you answered your own question there. Not everyone is smart!

Ain't THAT the truth.

Thanks for the prize, is it something really really nice?

mardylookingfrump · 13/03/2024 14:56

I thought the scoop was Charles doesn’t know, because he’d tell Camilla and Camilla would brief her media mates, Charles would want to run things his way – he’s waited ages to be king and be in charge! – and part of the ensuing shitshow is that KP isn’t as good at stuff as BP.

I know it’s another Kate thread but I’d not seen much on MN about the Spanish media thing specifically

Being multi-lingual and reading the foreign press as well as the British press, I can assure that the European press spouts even more shite about the Royals than the gutter press ie....Daily Fail, Sun, Express do in the UK.

As a disabled person I feel about cross about it all. There’s such a massive stigma around illness/disability that KP can’t even talk about it.

The rest of the world don’t get to take months off work and not tell their employer why. I honestly think whatever the issue, talking about it would make a real statement in terms of role modelling anti-stigma around disability and illness.

But who is her employer? The palace know what is wrong. And maybe she will talk about it when she is ready. I agree that illness and disability are unfairly stigmatised (I say so with a DH who is disabled and a DS with a SEN that can cause him problems in a social setting), but you can’t force people to talk about what is wrong with them if they don’t feel happy to do so. Everyone reacts differently and there is no right or wrong way

Your tax also funds teachers salaries. So you have a right to know why they're off sick?

Our deputy head was off probably three months. We knew it was an op. That's shed gone up north to recuperate. When she's be back. And that she was doing ok thank you, yes we'll pass on your thoughts. And no point did every wave a tax receipt around and demand to know what she'd had done. Of course we talked and discussed it quietly but no one would even think of saying more than "how are you doing now, glad to see you back, hope you're all better"

She was actually a few days later than we expected and there was a ripple of oh god, why isn't she back, is she ill? No one demanded the Head spill the details, we just gave it a few days and we're happy to see her.

Why post it if you "dont know how credible it is"???

Its a load of tripe at best.

Lots of people endure uterine repair surgery and hysterectomy. They don’t go into hiding for 3 months. A good friend of mine had a uterine repair and she was back at work within a fortnight. Kate’s jobs are turning up somewhere staying a short time then leaving again. There’s no heavy lifting, or eight hours on her feet.

Her time off seems a bit tone deaf.

You have absolutely NO IDEA what surgery she has had and have absolutely NO IDEA how much recovery she needs.

Some really unpleasant and very nosy people on MN.

Leave the poor woman alone.

None of your fucking business.

The problem here is that the RF exists thanks to us, people who are funding them.
We are told again and again that we should be grateful because they bring £XX to the economy just by being there.

That means that they simply cannot afford to get out of the limelight.

They can’t afford ‘oh I’ve decided to be private and go awol for several months’. And also expect people to simply swallow whatever line they are fed (see the so called MotherDay photo - for it to be killed, it had to be VERY bad!).

I think it’s a crap position to be in and one I’d get out of very quickly. I’d rather never be a Royal than be subjected to that constant scrutiny.
But they can’t expect to keep the titles, the fame and the money AND also give people curated bits when they feel like it.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/03/2024 15:02

Also my state pension. Anyone want to know what my oncologist says and if my medication gets tweaked when I have my regular check-in tomorrow?

BenefitWaffle · 13/03/2024 15:06

I think the extreme defence of Kate does not help her.
Charles does public relations far better, he recognises there is a middle way. He released that he has cancer and is having treatment, but nothing else. A few extreme types demanded to know what type of cancer he has and speculated, but most people have simply wish him well and do not wish to know anything else. Charles knows how to say enough to keep people happy, without saying too much.

Do you ever think how much better your life might be if you didn't look at Twitter?

Maybe add mumsnet to that last sentence!

Whalesong · 13/03/2024 15:09

Spanish (and other non-UK) press is also widely reporting that she wasn't ill at all, but is about to ask for a divorce as William has been having an affair with the mother of one of the page boys at their wedding. She has been repeatedly named as someone who is herself in divorce proceedings from her own husband.
All speculations. Just let it rest.

BenefitWaffle · 13/03/2024 15:12

Spain has tabloid style rubbish media like any other country. But they have reputable media and it is those I would read. To simply rubbish all the media sources in Spain sounds like simple xenophobia.

VillageOnSmile · 13/03/2024 15:13

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain
Its different and you know that.

As a teacher, your job is to teach. And yes there is scrutiny as to why you take time off. You can actually get sacked if you take too much time off, don’t meet deadlines etc….

Their job is to be visible.
Do we need to know all the gory details? Nope.
Do people expect some understanding, like the King talking about his cancer diagnosis? YES

Its part of their job.

But it’s worth remembering that people have to prove they are ill, how, diagnosis, how it affects their daily life, down to being able to shower or go to the loo, to get benefits when you are ill….

Catsfrontbum · 13/03/2024 15:15

The picture of them in the car yesterday is also a faked photoshopped pic.

they need to stop with the dreadful fake pics. Say nothing.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/03/2024 15:17

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain
Its different and you know that

But I thought if taxpayers are funding a lifestyle they have a right to all the details of that person's private life? like this

But it’s worth remembering that people have to prove they are ill, how, diagnosis, how it affects their daily life, down to being able to shower or go to the loo, to get benefits when you are ill….

hermenmumster · 13/03/2024 15:17

A scenario/:

Gynae surgery - all meant to be planned eg endometriosis. But surgeons accidently perforated her bowel due to extensive adhesions. Not that uncommon. Needs 2 weeks as in patient , may need stoma and reversal.
May have needed some critical care input.

Exhausted, feels like shit, mentally all over the place (like you would be post being critically ill) - also feels sense of duty/guilt to public for being away from duty. Puts out a photo to "keep everyone happy" . Gets it a bit wrong as she feels like shit . world goes bananas.

Are they 'reporting' this?

Or are they just indulging in lurid speculation, like every other person on Twitter, TMZ and indeed Mumsnet?

In which publications have you seen these 'reports' yourself?

Serenster · 13/03/2024 15:22

BenefitWaffle · 13/03/2024 14:41

It is quite extraordinary if Private Eye are right and Buckingham Palace does not know what is going on with Kate.

I presume that means the Buckingham Palace staff, not Charles and Camilla personally.

MikeRafone · 13/03/2024 15:24

I’m struggling to see WHY something like that would be ‘hidden’ anyway 🤔

because the British press has a thing with the RF of you scratch our back and we will scratch yours - so they were asked to keep it secret and not report - they've been asked to keep it confidential

the European press don't have the same relationship - so they will print what they know or find out - regardless, as its not going to upset their relationship with the `rf as they don't have one to start with.
