Meghan was often seen wearing coats in hot weather a few years ago. It’s odd.

MrsFinkelstein · 26/05/2024 09:58

I think its a really cute outfit, and Lilibet looks lovely in it.

It does kind of scream "upper class English child abroad" vibe though, or "British Summer look" in a Boden catalogue.

I remember an article I read years ago, that W&C dressed their children in that old fashioned/upper class frilly look for the few public events they were seen at, so that they would be less recognisable when dressed in jeans/t shirts etc when out in public just playing etc.

No idea whether that's true, but it's something that I've always remembered (like the registration of my 1st car, but not where I put our new NTS membership cards).

I've obviously watched too many stereotypically US films as I thought everyone had to be dressed in red, white & blue on 4th July.

Well yes that would make sense for the Wales children. People are often less recognisable when they are “off duty” dressed in casual wear ( that even applies to work colleagues I think). When the Wales children are seen at an event, it is inevitable they will be photographed and so people could recognise them, but the Sussex children are so rarely seen that I think most people would be hard pushed to recognise them at all. I think the way Lili is dressed makes her stand out more, which can’t be good from a security point of view. The socks thing made me smile as well, given the furore over not wanting the bridesmaids to wear tights. Maybe now they realise that little feet get rubbed 😆

That makes me think of Terry Pratchett and his "undisguise" of a big, black hat.
When he took it off he became invisible Smile

Yes they did, it appears.

But they were explicitly told that they would not be getting security if they moved to America as private citizens. We know that from the documents in Harry's silly judicial review case.

So it's not correct to say they didn't know. They did.

Someone who is 'paranoid about security' would not move themselves and their family to another continent in those circumstances.

BemusedAmerican · 26/05/2024 11:34

It is usually in the 90's F in July around the country so people dress for the heat. A lot of the little girls in wear dresses because they are cooler. I've seen many fewer kids in jeans in the past few years. This sandal brand or knockoffs or Crocs are worn without socks:

Lili would be overdressed.

No real color code anymore.

The guy to the left in the photo has a jacket on. I find So Cal chilly often because of the low humidity.

Also, some nuance with wearing patriotic colors or clothing. I’ve never worn it and never would. But today, anything with a flag is viewed as racist in some circles. It’s been politicized.

AliceOlive · 26/05/2024 11:50

“The average weather in San Diego in July is a high temperature of 76 degrees. While it can be hotter or colder, this is a very reasonable high for the middle of summer. On the other hand, the low temperature is 66 degrees.”

BemusedAmerican · 26/05/2024 12:40

@AliceOlive then we ( and the Midwest) are at least 20 degrees hotter and dress for it. At one point we were cooler than Seattle last summer because they had that horrible heat wave.

AliceOlive · 26/05/2024 12:52

Yes, wildly different climates. I remember being shocked that a sweater was needed many nights in New England in the summer.

Upstate NY is the same, no?

And "You know, three days before our wedding, we got married."
So that 'spectacle' you plebs cheered at and helped pay for was just for show. We were fooling you all along.

So disrespectful to the Archbishop, who married them, and the Queen, who is Head of the Church of England, by which rites they were married.

And so stupid and pointless, bcause it was so easily contradicted.

The Archbishop himself came out and said it was untrue. (And I don't suppose he did that without consulting the Queen.)

Just made people wonder what else they were being untruthful about.

So many things!

I firmly believe Harry thought they were bluffing to keep them in the U.K. When it was clear they were going he assumed that Pa would pay for security.
Remember he told Meghan there was no way security would be removed.

Tizzwazz · 26/05/2024 13:26

Meghan said they got married, the two of them, and the Archbishop was present. In her mind and heart they did hence the word marriage. Nothing wrong with that. She did not expect everyone to focus on the legal aspect. I see no lie. I do believe she revealed it because of the crass and ignorant gossip and awful reporting questioning her motives regarding Prince Harry. It was a special moment for them.

Meghan is literally being tarred and feathered in the UK and hated upon. No compassion for her miscarriage. No compassion for how her family betrayed her before and after the royal wedding. No compassion for the obvious racism she endured instead let’s just deny it. What a sad place parts of the UK is turning into. She is overanalysed and seen through a lens so biased and tainted that objectivity and empathy are no longer applied to the individual. Many old, pasty women and men in suits pile in on her whether in the papers, in books or interviews. They monetise her to sell themselves and their poison. Some of the public willingly drink it.

I admire her spirit. She has done a lot to reach out and help others. I wish her every success for the future.

If she says things like “we were married 3 days before” in a televised interview, then it doesn’t matter that she felt it in her mind and heart as you put it. It sounds, on face value, like she means that they were “married 3 days before”, and even if we give her their benefit of the doubt and infer that she only means “in her mind and heart”, it is still a fucking insult to those who watched and enjoyed the wedding, and to all the guests and family that attended because it comes across as “the wedding you attended wasn’t the real one”. Even if she felt that way, it was massively ungracious to say so

eta forgot to say, of course she will be overanalysed in these circumstances. She was doing an interview!

Semi-interesting development that's been noted.

The statement that's been removed is the initial one Jason Knauf released on Harry's insistence, that confirmed Meghan as his girlfriend. It also set the combative toll towards the media going forward.

Who has she reached out and helped? Genuinely can’t think of anyone beyond the photo ops.

She was not “ literally “ tarred and feathered !
Don’t be ridiculous!

Serenster · 26/05/2024 13:39

Meghan said they got married, the two of them, and the Archbishop was present. In her mind and heart they did hence the word marriage. Nothing wrong with that. She did not expect everyone to focus on the legal aspect

Here’s what Meghan actually said:

…even at our wedding, you know, three days before our wedding, we got married . . .No one knows that. But we called the Archbishop, and we just said, ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us’. So, like, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury… Just the three of us.

So your interpretation entirely relies on you reading words in that don’t exist in that discussion (that Meghan meant that she was married in her “heart and mind” and she did not expect people to focus on the legal aspect). None of which you can know, and which Meghan certainly didn’t say. You’ve had to interpret her words in that way to make them fit the interpretation that you want them to bear - that’s called bias.

She had a wedding rehearsal - the same as everyone else. We know you practice saying the vows. If they felt that was a special moment to them - then fair enough. Just say that: "we said the vows to each other, just us and the Archbishop and it meant so much just to us".

It was the (IMO) dismissive "this spectacle...for the world" that was unnecessary and which offended.

No one forced them to have that big of a wedding. They asked for Westminster Abbey and for a red carpet on the aisle. They invited Hollywood A-listers and not Meghan's extended family. They chose the designer wedding dress and handmade veil with Royal tiara.

If they had wanted a far smaller, more intimate event they absolutely could have had it.

It cost UK taxpayers £32M and thousands of people turned out to wish them well.

Being told it was just a "spectacle" that they didn't appreciate or want was a slap in the face, and a really really dumb thing to say.

Is pasty bad?
Should poor Harry get some bronzer?
I expect there'll be some knocking around the house.

BemusedAmerican · 26/05/2024 13:55

@AliceOlive yes. What kills us is the humidity. Amplifies the heat.

themessygarden · 26/05/2024 13:55

HaHa, pasty Harry 😁 I think M would stab him if he put his hands on her bronzer.

I wondered if it was yet another tedious dogwhistle and a euphemism for "white"?

Happily the endless insistence that every last criticism must be based in racism seems to have largely ended - perhaps because it no longer had any credibility - but it still creeps in occasionally

BigWillyLittleTodger · 26/05/2024 14:16

Many old, pasty women and men in suits

Is it just the women who are old and pasty or the men in suits as well? The funny thing is, Harry is the poster boy for a pasty man in a suit! What an own goal! 🤣

RoseAndRose · 26/05/2024 14:17

It think it’s ginger-ist

like many gingers, he doesn’t seem to tan, hence looks pasty (or red, if he gets it wrong)
