So I see there is a brand-new Duke and Duchess of Sussex website. Very glossy.

But the self-aggrandising! I just read Meghan’s bio and - cringe - it was the worst of LinkedIn. Sometimes less is more!

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain anyone who references Katherine Howard and Dereham in a thread like this is a hero to me!

There was no definitive proof that she married Dereham. Also, at that time it wasn't a legal requirement that the bride of the king had to be a virgin either.

Supersimkin2 · 13/02/2024 16:14

Pomposity at its most fun.

Earnest, humourless Californian woke and old skool toff entitlement in combo - delicious. That’s before the hypocrisy.

I think Harry’s right about the press, but his very personal fight will fuel his paranoia and instability. She’s an ex soap actor who could have been popular but she got too grabby and reached too high.

wildernesssw · 13/02/2024 16:14

I agree Katherine Howard had a rough deal. Mind you, so did all of Henry 8's wives, sooner or later! I admire Anne of Cleves the most 😀

I knew Gina Torres- and face one of the men before suits.

I don't think suits was actually big enough to raise the actors profiles that much in UK - but I agree Meghan career was successful in a very hard industry.

But suits was not widely watched in UK and Meghan was not a huge acting name -I'd say both were a success on their own terms but like their website I often see their supporters over promoting both here which does invite ridicule and diminishes their actual success.

I agree that the extremely partisan online supporters are more a hinderance than a help. I'm not thinking of people here, more from when I was on twitter and I assume tiktok isn't any better.

I can't believe that Harry or Meghan would agree with our support tweeters who suggest Catherine was beaten by William or that the Wales' would agree with and support people saying that Meghan faked her pregnancies. Using two really extreme things I've read have been said. It must be so hard to try and negotiate normally family ups and downs with that rubbish in the public domain and the tabloids making up sources right, left and centre.

Agree. Anne of Cleves played a blinder. Gained the status of The King's Beloved Sister, a huge mansion and pension for life in Melton Mowbray and always welcomed at Court. Clever, clever girl.

She was so young too, never really had a chance once Henry loomed into view. I can't imagine living like that

Hocuspocusnonsense · 13/02/2024 16:18

Oh FGS they should be stripped of their royal titles. It’s ridiculous! Harry has all but officially left the royal family! I’m not a royalist but his behaviour and the things that have been said surely should bring an end to his official title and Meghan’s.

It’s ridiculous!

Verbal pre contract apparently so no solid written proof… it wasn’t that she wasn’t a virgin it was the fact she lied that she’d been married to Dereham. And the king and his advisors believed Dereham when he mentioned she was pre contracted. Also Lady Rochford gave evidence and spied for Katherine and Culpeper. So Katherine’s card was marked anyway. Basically she couldn’t or didn’t also give the king a child but was a useful diversion away from Cleves who the king believed he’d been tricked into marrying.

I wonder what the RF think

I bet his desperate attention seeking antics don't even raise an eyebrow these days.

But in doing so gave up the right to be a wife and mother.

Katherine Howard was a beautiful vivacious teenager and Henry, by that point, was a fat, stinking old lech. Don't blame her in the slightest for what she did.

They did. Most people thought he was mad. But it was considered treason at one point to even think the king was mad (don’t know how you could prove that!) so everyone bowed to him and ignored him and hoped his wrath didn’t fall on them next like it did with Thomas Cromwell and others.

I expect liked most families with tensions they are sad that there is a rift but at the moment I doubt it is the first thing in their minds

Nor do I! But she was badly advised and guided by her elders for their own advantages.

Yes, they've got other things to be concerned about, although it's probably as amusing to them as it is for many on here.

I think she could have married and had children if she so wished?

Why do you all care so much?
Just don't go on the website if it bothers you so much

It doesn't bother people. They're finding it entertaining.
Have you read it?

Yes, but didn't have status at her brother's court, and might well not have been married (or married 'well') anyway.

in the grand scheme of 16th century womanhood, she had status and autonomy!

Obviously it was best to be a wealthy widow 😜

Bookist · 13/02/2024 16:26

Was it shown in court records that Lady Rochford did spy on Katherine and Dereham? Because I'm pretty sure this was something that Philippa Gregory invented?

No I’m sure I read somewhere it was a condition of her divorce settlement that she stay single and as the King’s Sister. It’s also been pointed out that as too was supposed to have been pre contracted before her her marriage to Henry and then his views on her body and personality and having cast her aside that who would want her as a wife then? Plus her English wasn’t good (but improved) and she almost certainly didn’t want to return to Cleves to her brother and mother who were both very strict, moralistic and the brother sounds unhinged.

Anyway, this is a bit of a derail, and we will get our wrists slapped by MN! But I do love a bit of historical gossip and speculation!

No, there are documents to prove this apparently in her confession and in the evidence given against her.

Getthethrowonthesofa · 13/02/2024 16:28

I never thought I’d say it, but I genuinely feel sorry for Charles.

after all they went through with them leaving, the clearly arduous discussions to ensure they didn’t monetise being royal. To try to support them making it on their own.

And five years later, here we are, they are going for it, as they have fully failed at their commercial enterprises.

Now blatantly using their royal titles for commercial gain and as publicly as possible, even relaunching the exact same Sussex royal website that has lain Dormant since 2020 ,with simply royal and hrh taken out.

charles will be forced to act. The only thing I can see at his disposal is to remove the Sussex titles and leave Harry as a prince. But I’m not sure that will stop them. They will regroup, and go for it again, with prince and princess Harry.
