Does anyone know where Prince William is?

Errrrr….. where’s Willy? The press focus in the past 24 hours has been perplexing. King Charles’ diagnostic has been the top item, of course. But, bizarrely, the 2nd item has almost invariably been… Prince Harry this and that and the other. Prince HARRY??? What’s with the obsession with him? This should be about Prince WILLIAM! Yet from/about him, absolute silence. What on Earth is going on?

And please don’t start with the “he has to be at his wife’s bedside”. If Harry The Not Next In Line To The Throne And Not Counsellor of State And Can’t Stand In For The King etc etc can fly all the way from Montecito, then William The next King and He Who Should Stand In For King Charles can go visit his Dad in hospital (did he?), rush to be by his dad’s bedside (did he?), make announcements about which official duties he will take up, etc etc.

I know Prince Harry is the one the media are addicted to writing about and slagging off to drive clicks, but can they (and so many on these boards) perhaps take a break from their unhealthy obsession with H (&M) and keep the spotlight where most would expect it to be, on King Charles and, in particular, his successor Prince William?

Well - I’ve only been here 15 years but I just asked my mother in law who is American and in her 80s and she say there’s always been American made cheeses which were not the rubbery stuff. And there have always been local creameries making all sorts of fresh cheeses in most of the East Coast states as far as she is aware.

I had a guest from the eastern part of France on the Swiss border who declared a cheese I was serving to be as good as anything she could get there. I would have thought she was being kind but she ate most of it. On the other hand, I never really heard from her again so who knows?

But I had another French couple visit who adored a local cheese I served them. And I promise they are quite honest. In fact the husband told me that my olive oil was “NOT olive oil!” Then he shipped me some.

Well I have said that we weren't East Coast so I guess your MIL has been lucky in her location wordler. But more than that, things have clearly moved on the cheese front generally (although as I've said to jeff who didn't pick it up, I wrote in the past tense anyhow). But there seems to be broad agreement that the generic cheese in US supermarkets is still pretty bad. And that was our only option at the time, certainly in the Mojave Desert (even in affluent Palm Desert) and right up and down the West Coast of California, wherever we stopped. With Carmel being the honourable exception - just one small shop not far from the Mission. I don't really see any disagreement tbh.

I’ve already mentioned that my grandmother in rural Kentucky had no problem sourcing good cheeses of all varieties. I experienced this from mid 1970s when I moved near throughout the remainder of her life.

Louisville was home to many wonderful dairies that would have had good cheese. Ehrler’s being just one of them.

It sounds like you just didn’t know where to look until you stumbled upon a cheese shop. They existed, though. Maybe not near the post, but they were around.

We were in Kentucky for a much shorter time than we were in California AliceOlive. I guess cheese was less on my mind there given that I had various more pressing issues to deal with but I'm not clear why you're so determined that I must have had wonderful cheese in front of my nose. I assure you that I didn't even if your elderly grandmother insists that she did. I only went to Louisville for Kosair. Cheese shopping wasn't a preoccupation with a newborn baby in NICU. We lived in Fort Knox. The Kosair staff were amazing without exception but the cheese was not.

In California it was shit wherever I shopped.

I mean, I am capable of shopping perfectly well - in fact I'm quite a pro - so it may just be that Europeans have different standards on this front, just as there's no doubt that the French are generally more discerning with food etc than the English. Or perhaps it's more micro than that and I'm particularly picky - entirely possible.

There's really no point telling me that your grandmother thinks her cheese was great. I think my cheese was shit in the early nineties and it could genuinely boil down to standards as well as location and taste.

It's such a pointless thing to be so dogged about, especially given that this whole rather sad and utterly humourless cheese thing was instigated purely to derail the thread and to stop the comments about various members of the rf, which were clearly biting.

We’ve done the ‘who’ and ‘where’ with Prince William but not the ‘what or the ‘why’.

He appeared to be very under the weather at the MBE honours with all his swaying, blinking and dropping something. I thought he must have been very ill, but then he seems to have perked up a lot at the evening do, videoed and photographed in high spirits, laughing and smiling with Tom Cruise.

@wildernesssw yes similar , to be honest it isn’t my favourite flavour wise zi just love the madness of an Alpine cheese in Norfolk. My recommendation for a Norfolk cheese would be the mardler or Copy’s Cloud .

I am sorry you had to spend time at Kosair. I can well imagine cheese was not a priority with a sick infant.

My only point is that by the early 1990s there was plentiful good cheese to be found in Kentucky.

But my grandmother is long dead and no doubt would be shocked that I remember her cheese selection. I would never have described her as elderly and it’s my opinion that she could run circles around most anyone when it came to sourcing and cooking good food.

I don’t know what more we can say about Prince William today. He’s in Amber, right? Is it on or in? I just saw the cheese conversation and like you, jumped in.

This is Caboc. Said to be Scotland's 'oldest cheese, Caboc is a rich double cream cheese, which is allowed to age naturally without the addition of rennet. The cheese is shaped into small logs and rolled in toasted pinhead oatmeal. It is pale primrose yellow with a very buttery and smooth texture. Delicious .

To tell you the truth, she was terrifying! 5” tall, piercing dark eyes, wholly formidable, and according to my brother she had bourbon stashed in decanters all over the house. And it was cheap bourbon in beautiful decanters.

Cheese was one of our main bonding points.

My DH just made me a nice hot toddy because I’m developing a cold and the talking about her got me thinking about bourbon.
